Topic: Do you vote or favorite?

Posted under General

I want to get a better of understanding of what a number of votes and favorites mean for an image.
On average favorites outnumber votes 2:1

I personally vote on images that I like/dislike and favorite images I want to visit again.
If you were to gauge the popularity of an image, what would be the more accurate representation? favorites or votes?

I favorite much more than I vote for the simple reason that favoriting an image is much more functional than voting on an image. I rarely search by votes, so from my perspective, voting does very little.

I think a lot of people tend to behave this way. So favorites are probably the more accurate representation of popularity.

I favorite images that I want to look at again later. I upvote images that I think look really great or have a good concept or theme. Some things get both, some get one or the other.

I tend to vote based on the art and dialogue quality. Whereas favorites are for content that I want to be able to easily find again. Those don't always overlap.

As for searches, I often use 'score:>2'. It weeds out a lot of old low-quality content. Sorting by favorites doesn't work well, because in general older equals more favorites. While downvoted posts usually stay in negatives.

Edit: And there's some high-quality posts that never gain a lot of favorites, often because the thumbnail isn't eye-catching enough. Which is an another reason why I prefer filtering out the lowest scores, rather than sorting by favorites.

I also vote based on quality, and use my favorites as bookmarks. But since favorites are public, most of mine are actually in a private set.

I almost never vote down, though.

When I fav something I vote it up. It's like two layers of "liking" - an upvote is good and when I really like it I add it to my favourites

I'll upvote and if I REALLY like it or find something amusing, I'll also add to faves.

I'm the complete opposite lol I favourite everything and if I really like it I'll upvote it.

Upvote: this image is good and should stay on the site. The uploader did well. Just like Reddit basically.

Fave: I really like this image and I'd like to bookmark it.

I upvote much more posts than I fave. Like maybe 100:1 or so.

Think I'm more at the 1000:1 ratio. I'm /extremely/ picky.

I've discovered that after a post has a +20 or so score, the ratio of upvotes-to-faves seems to be a more accurate way to judge the content of an image than the score itself(with exceptions*).

A ~1:1 ratio tends to contain some of the best art on the entire site, though there's also a lot of memes and small comic pages that end up there because the bandwagon effect.
post #1438203 post #784344 post #689820

~0.5:1 Tend to be similarly high-quality, minus most of the memes from above.

~0.25:1 Entry-level ok, quality probably represents the majority of the popular artwork.

~0.1:1 usually has a high number of faves because the artist is popular or it panders to a specific fetish, otherwise there isn't much to see here.

*Judging like this is broken by images with negative scores, re-uploaded or otherwise subject to some database alteration. Long-running comics tend to throw it off also.

I fave basically everything I don't hate. Upvote stuff I really like.

Seems unproductive, you need to search for stuff you really like when you want it, since your favorites are basically exactly the same as e6 posts.
Unless you compare your favorites to e6 and find the ones that are missing in the list.

I see no logic in doing it that way.

i vote up what i think is good quality, favorite what i personally liked, regardless of quality, and judge popularity by comments. fame and infamy alike can be determined that way.

Same for me. It's become a habit for me to just press two buttons that I do it automatically

  • Upvote things that I like
  • Fav things that I artistically approve of (difficult to quantify; "interesting and neither technically broken or technically overworked")

Considering

I fave basically everything I don't hate

, maybe a browser extension could be made that effectively blacklists all post ids that you have already seen? The browser already tracks that information. (in case you don't see the relevance. if you fav almost everything, you are implicitly creating a list of almost everything you have seen)

Sure there's logic. Favoriting a post is easier because the button is bigger. Plus you can search stuff you voted up or down. eg votedup:fenrick

Do note however that regardless of what you put into that search modifier, it treats it as your user number anyways. You cannot search for what other users voted on.

Almost everything that I upvote I also favorite, and when sets got introduced almost everything I favorited I ended up putting in my top faves set (which I should really start cleaning out and actually add only my top favorite images like it used to be for). I guess I just like collecting images in my favorites.

yup. That wasn't always the case.

I favourite stuff that i really like, and vote up things that are good but not quite favourite-grade material

I 'vote up' things that I feel are genuinely well done or are otherwise worth recommending for others to see. It's a nod to quality beyond personal appeal.

Favorites lists for me as usually a thing where something appeals to me personally enough to want to bookmark it for later viewing, making it by definition a kind of smaller subset of the above category. It means that I don't just find it interesting but truly enjoy it.

I do this basically everywhere, not just on this website.

I do both, though I wish that when I fave a post, it also upvotes at the same time like how Derpibooru does it for less hassle.

Updated by anonymous

I favorite things that I like and want to access later. I will also upvote the post if I ultralike it. Upvoting and faving is like giving the picture a double like.
