Topic: "Should we allow people to request DNP for any reason?" My opinion on the matter

Before you begin reading, keep in mind that this post is not a request to change how e621.net operates, nor is it to be taken as criticism and locked. This post is meant to express my opinion regarding DNP requests, and to generate discussion about the opinion itself.

One of the more controversial aspects of e621.net is the ability for artists to request "Do Not Post" status for any reason, whether it be because of their submissions being excessively downvoted or that their work is paid/copyrighted content.

With DNP status being recently granted to Jasonafex, One of my friends (who I will not name here for privacy reasons) who appreciated his work brought this up in a conversation last night. He told me that that Jasonafex shouldn't have done it out of pressure because of the hatred he gets e621. Even if this may have not been the reason why Jasonafex went DNP on e621, it makes perfect sense because other artists have done that before.

"So, realandyisepic, what is your opinion about DNP? You haven't told me yet"

My opinion is that e621.net should not allow artists to freely request DNP status. There should be approved reasons as to why an artist should be granted DNP status on this website

For an idea of how my opinion would work, the Moderators would have an unreleased list of "valid" and "invalid" reasons for requesting DNP status, which examples of each are listed below:

VALID

  • My artwork is paid/copyrighted content
  • My artwork is truly not meant to be on e621.net (i.e the art comes from a website directed at children)
  • My artwork is exclusive preview content

INVALID

  • My artwork is being downvoted too much
  • I don't want my artwork on e621.net because it's e621.net
  • My artwork includes a character I don't want seen on e621.net

Then, when an artist submits a DNP request, the moderators will approve or reject the DNP request and send a DNP confirmation/denial message to the requester.

What do you like or dislike about my opinion? Feel free to post your thought about it below. Please use constructive criticism.

this is. bad. artists should have freedom to decide where their art is posted and where not, no matter what is their reasons behind it. its their art, they are the ones who worked their ass off to produce the content so its up to them if they dont want it on some site.

Ah yes, starting a discussion on a self-perceived controversial aspect of the page that hosts the thing being discussed, while not being aimed at trying to change anything about that aspect.

Makes perfect sense.

Whether you like it or not the DNP list and ability to obtain it for any given reason will stay in effect. Unless you're an artist on the DNP list your opinion also really doesn't matter.
