Topic: Sticky thread for tag applicability questions?

Posted under General

There is a sticky thread Find The Artist/Source/Image Request Thread. Would it make sense to add a similar sticky thread for questions about the applicability of tags to posts?
I have a concrete example:

It took me a long time to find the following post because I thought it would be obvious that the character is feline and, because of that, added feline to all my search requests.
Apparently I was wrong to assume that. The character certainly looks feline to me, but according to Wikipedia, a cacomistle is something completely different.

The character Tee is sometimes tagged feline, sometimes not:
https://e621.net/post/index/1/tee%20feline
https://e621.net/post/index/1/tee%20feline%20solo
https://e621.net/post/index/1/tee%20-feline
https://e621.net/post/index/1/tee%20-feline%20solo
It appears that this is only the case with Tee, though, and not with cacomistles in general:
https://e621.net/post/index/1/cacomistle%20-tee%20feline
https://e621.net/post/index/1/cacomistle%20-tee%20feline%20solo

What do we do with those posts?
How did so many posts with Tee get tagged feline? (Maybe because the character looks feline?)
Do we remove the tag (unless there is another character which is feline)?
Do we consistently add the tag to posts with Tee in it?
Or do we decide on a case-by-case basis? If so: Should the post mentioned above be tagged feline?
Maybe tagging Tee as cacomistle is wrong? I only found this ref-sheet on FA, but it specifies "esperion" as the species, which seems to be fictional, so that's not helpful either.

I kinda feel like creating a new thread for each such request would be overkill. I wouldn't want to spam the forum.

Not sure why she would be tagged with any species in the same family as raccoons, except someone taking the rings pattern on her tail way too seriously. It doesn't seem to fit either TWYS (she looks feline to me, too), nor does it seem to be someone doing some on-the-sly TWYK (as the canonical ref sheets available for her seem to consider her feline).

That image is a perfect example of either the artist or the character owner not actually caring to follow species cues. The character as drawn looks like a feline because the artist used proportions from a panther instead of a cacomistle.

The skull form, nose, ears, and tail are all more at home on a feline than on a cacomistle. That image should probably tagged as a hybrid at best of both feline and cacomistle.

Actually... The ref sheet listed doesn't say anything about cacomistles...

I wondered "where did this cacomistle thing come from...?

I did some detective work and, basically, someone added it to a post or three, and it spread.

Looking at Tee's reference sheets...

A ref sheet from 2014 calls her an esperian (a fictional feline species)
2013's sheet still says she's still an esperian
The 2012 sheet... calls her a cacomistle!

So, it looks like this character changed species early on. which makes sense: This critter looks subtley different than the creature she is now:

So... I'd say she's "feline" in most of her modern pictures and a cacomistle in her oldest pictures... and between? well, it'll depend on the picture!

I would like to see a thread about tag applicability stuff, because I've run into questions myself, but don't usually feel like making a thread about it.

For example, a long while ago I happened across this:

I'm not sure how it should be tagged. Should it be tagged as intersex? It very clearly has both male and female features (having both a penis and a pouch), but it doesn't really look like it would belong in dickgirl.

What's with the compulsion to have sticky mega-threads for everything? We already have forum categories.

Each question should get its own thread with a descriptive title, even if it's just about one post. That's the best way to keep questions and their answers grouped together. Otherwise, it's a bunch of disparate discussions stepping on each other's toes because they've all been unnecessarily crammed into the same thread.

I don't think it is, though I know some others do. Just, keep in mind: scanning a list of topics and ignoring things you don't care about is easy. Scanning a mega-thread is harder.
