Well... you've got a problem there.

See... anime and western styles do not exist in two seperate bubbles. They've been influencing each other for decades. Literally, the "God of Manga" Osamu Tezuka was influenced heavily by scrooge mcduck comics back in the 50s.

numerous anime were brought over to become kids shows over the years-- and some of our shows went over there. Many of todays artists grew up in a world where we watched about as much anime as 'western animation' growing up. Western animation is influenced by anime. there is no clear distinction between the two.

post #1205869 for example... is very anime influenced. Her eyes, nose, mouth and hair all have anime influences.

That fur affinity picture is basically the same thing. Those are anime eyes and an anime mouth and an anime nose and hair. They're also western, because it's hard to say that one thing is anime and one thing is not these days.

So... it might be more helpful to declare what it is that you DO want out of your art and what you don't want. because "not anime"... isn't helpful.

I suspect that they want the cel-shaded anime-like style, but downplaying the "big eyes, small mouth" style of, say, Tsundere Idol or Fox Hime Zero (to say nothing of chibi - I assume the hyper-distorted proportions there would illustrate the exact opposite of what Doveen wants).

I don't know if it's correct to call one "manga" versus the other "comics", but it seems to me like western artists (when they aren't intentionally drawing BESM/manga) do seem to tend towards more realistic facial proportions, whereas eastern ones tend to favor exaggerated ones.

There is more of a realistic style indeed. Look at Hokuto No Ken, which was striking when compared to the standard fare of the time. Seinen and stuff like that seem to have more in common with American comic books, but often with more detail still.

So I take it to mean more of a comic-book aesthetic than cartoon. Or just more of an "adult" design.
