Topic: Getting raw images from Tumblr

Recently Dogenzaka pointed out that you can get the raw image from a Tumblr post by reblogging it and exporting your Tumblr. This method has been added to howto:sites_and_sources#tumblr. I used it to update post #1732714, post #1732723 and post #1732729.

There are a lot more posts in source:tumblr width:1280 date:2018-08-01..2018-12-31 that could be updated, but it's hard to tell which posts have been downscaled. post #1652551 had a width of 1280, which suggested it was downscaled and it was. But post #1689980 also has a width of 1280 and the raw version is no bigger. Does anyone know how to tell which posts have been downscaled?

We still have 5 days left so... now or never, right?

Pretty much. Altough it seems like people are now full on abuse mode with this system so it can take more than several days for the process to complete. So either focus on being fast or if you already have blog full of reblogs. I have had test blog with only handful of reblogs being processed for 3 days now.

Then of course remember that SFW artwork will be fine in future as well.

If the filetype is JPG, it's pretty safe bet that it has been at least recompressed if it's sourced from _1280, even if the resolution matches. This was one thing I noticed during raw period as even lower resolution JPG files were always inferior quality to RAW. Some PNG files were missing embedded color profiles, but outside of that almost all PNG below sample treshold were visually identical.

There's many reasons why I hate artists using JPG and this is one of them.

So just a confirmation: all we have to do is reblog whatever we need to get and then export our blogs?

Almost, especially since it takes few days before the 18+ content will be vanished. Not even some SFW work is safe.

The best thing that we could do is to end our addictions to any popular sites like Twitter and of course the aforementioned Tumblr. We need to think carefully when it comes to sites like these.

Well, time to say goodbye to Tumblr. So long, and farewell, you little bastard.

Fun fact, that may have been the first time I ever wrote the word tumblr, this being the second.

Oh, goody. Another massive flood of re-posts and deletions because updating a post is just far too difficult for however this website is built. Oh, but this time it's going to be a *rushed* flood, so things might get messy and flags may be thrown up where they aren't supposed to be or images may be put up in full res that the artist doesn't want, thus upsetting them because we're in a hurry now to beat it before tumblr excises a large portion its own brain.

Hopefully this'll be the final flood. To me, these floods of reposts and deletions have legitimately been the worst part of this website.

I think this is us to blame. Had Tumblr not becoming popular, this whole situation shouldn't had happen.

Not that it matters anyway since Tumblr finally get what it deserved.

I always wonder why some artists upload full res images to the internet outside of paywalls if they don't want the general populace to have access to them. Plenty of artists downsize things they upload, and it's not difficult or time-consuming to do.

I've got just a bit more than 1000 images of mostly Sonic stuff downloaded with this method.

I don't really have time to update anything on e621 with hi-res versions but if there are anyone who is willing to do this I can upload my archive somewhere after I remove non-furry stuff from there.

I found a trick that speeds up reblogging...if you hold down alt and click the reblog button it won't redirect you to a new page...and the button will turn green once completed. Really speeds up the process if you intend to do hundreds of reblogs.

Edit: Apparently this trick only works on post pages, so you're have to open each post on its own page and use the reblog button in the top-right of the page.

Well this sucks...I reblogged a bunch of posts, hit the export button. They got back to me really fast, probably in about 10 minutes (which was nice because I thought it would take days), but downloading the export is IMPOSSIBLE. I have good internet, but it's only downloading @ 100kb/s, which I wouldn't mind waiting, but then it always fails at around 100mb. Have no idea how the rest of you downloaded 1,000+ images like this...I'm having trouble getting 100.

Try again in hour or two and use download helper like Jdownloader2.
It seems like the whole export backup system is running as lowest priority so if there's high traffic you will get throttled to death.
