Topic: Trying to find art of transgender characters

Posted under General

So, I did a thing.

I'm not the best at expressing myself in words, but I promised myself I would take this public when I hit 2000 posts, so here goes nothing.

Set:Canonically Trans Characters

I know some people on this site don't care about characters' backstories or gender identities or other lore- heck, some people even prefer to ignore even physical details if they aren't visible in the specific picture that they're currently looking at- but for some users, it matters. And for some of us, it matters a lot.

If you don't care, you can just ignore this the way you would sets like 'Posts related to the number 666' or 'anus focus' or any other collection that isn't relevant to your interests. But if you're one of the people that's felt burned by TWYS, or if you're uncomfortable with the types of tags the site uses for 'intersex' bodies being applied to your characters or fursonas, or if you're looking for trans-friendly artists to consider commissioning, or if you just want to feel a little more represented-

Set:Canonically Trans Characters

I'm doubtlessly missing a lot of characters who belong here, and I've probably ended up including at least a few who don't, but it's something. I hope you enjoy that it exists, and if you want to help me make this more complete and accurate, I welcome your input/feedback.

Thank you <3 This isa a fantastic set and I love it.

I also want to say... I know it can feel like the staff doesn't care about transpeople or representation, but we do. Every person out there matters to us. We wish that there was an easy--or even difficult solution to the 'problem' of the tags we use for certain types of bodies, but just as there are many ways to be a human being (or anthro fox), no solution solves every problem, and there's always someone or something left behind. One day, I hope we can better represent every being on the site, while still maintaining searchability for everyone... but in the mean time -- I'm glad we have someone like you making a set like this.

Thank you.

@Cryptic_Cryptid If it helps, you can probably add almost all content from the visibly_trans tag into this set! It's a helpful tag, though its biggest fault is definitely relying solely on visual factors when trans characters aren't always 100% visibly or noticeably trans. Real neat set tho! It's nice to have a place where transgender characters are categorized, real useful!

That's the major problem of the objective tagging system that we have, but I wouldn't trade this system for any other. It's actually possible to find the things we're searching for.

That said, I'm glad this set was created as well.

All I really got to say is agreed. This site is has the best tagging system out of anywhere I seen. Sure there is some minor problems and some questionable tag rulings but still.

Also nice set. Interesting to know who is canonically trans. Though I don't remember Chu being so. But what do I know, I probably just missed that info.

Do remember that information like this can also be put into the wiki page for the specific characters. If the owners has a bio for that character somewhere feel free to basically paste that into the respective wiki page, or link to it.

Another tool on the "Please don't freak out that we changed your tag" toolbelt.
Nice.

I've already been using that tag, but thanks anyway! And yeah, even searching more broadly I know I'm still relying disproportionately on visuals. I'm hoping that as time goes on, if people find this thing useful that some of them might help point out characters who I've missed.

TBH, I feel like I've got a big enough project right now just working on the set itself, but that's handy to know. Thanks!

It's super easy to miss, w/r/t Chu. I only really picked up on the info because I'm actively making a point of checking the FA submission info boxes (or tumblr tags, or sometimes comments, and so on) as part of putting this together. Most people aren't usually going to be so persnickety.

Thank you, too, @SnowWolf- it means a lot to hear that.

Lol You'd think I would have caught that since I quoted you and all. But strangely I didn't.

Can't believe I am necroing this post(And I'll take the red mark if warranted. I hope its not but I will.) but 1: I kinda think people might like to be reminded that this set does exist.

And 2: I need to point out to that Felix 'Ferris' Argyle, is not trans. He only insists upon calling himself a girl because of a promise he made to Crusch, and to screw(Figuratively) with people. In fact he has stated he is male "In both body and mind."

I can already hear some people typing now and LN means nothing, that came out after the anime, The creator said he is male, and him stopping his own puberty also has to do with the promise to Crusch. I mean really if you were asked by someone who saved you, some you love dearly(Not necessarily romantically either) to portray the part of them that they can not themselves you probably would.

Sorry. I actually thought long and hard about not posting at least point 2 of this comment, because I know some people will get upset and it might possibly start this whole big shouting match, BUT I am so tired of inaccuracy surrounding characters for whatever reason. I mean if a character really is trans awesome, and I'll certainly watch if the story of what they are in is good, but I see this stuff every year now, and with every character that doesn't fill the mold 100% of Male or Female.
