Topic: Tagging System

Posted under General

Is there any way we could change the tagging system to instead of being a "type in a tag, it adds it" it instead gives a list of tags alraedy created and ou simply choose them, like how the related tags system works- but with all tags? New tags could still be created, but they'd have to be admin-created, and that way we won't get fifteen tags meaning the same thing that are already consolidated under a sixteenth. It'd also help with taggers not sure what to tag; "Oh, hey, there IS a lamp tag. *tags lamp to a pic with a lamp in it*"

Or is that just a pipe dream of mine?

I find the 'related tags' pretty much all that is needed. You start with the basic 10-15 tags for things that you see and then click related tags for a list to browse through and see if you missed some obvious ones.

There is a total of 1133 pages with 50 tags on each. Do you really want to browse through them all?

I sent this to a guy a few days ago--it's not exactly what you said, but it helps....

additionally, it doesnt' require massive amounts of coding and approvals and changing EVERYTHING on the site :3

If you go to 'my account', then 'settings' there's a box called 'uploaded tags' ... basically, what you do is you put tags you use often into this box, each on a new line. For example, a portion of mine currently says:

striped_socks
pantyhose
stockings

And what this will do is, when you are in them iddle of uploading and are typing in tags, it will give you a column at the bottom called 'favorite tags' (next to 'recent tags') and you can click on these words to automatically input them into the box.

So if you upload a lot of, say, lucario, you could put:

pokemon
lucario
blue
spikes

and have really quick access to all 4 of those.

If you use some 'characters' over and over, you can do something like.. well, here's an explaination: I upload a lot of my little pony art, which often features the same characters, so I have something like this:

unknown_artist
female
male
ambiguous_gender
---
pinkie_pie_(mlp)
pink
pink_hair
blue_eyes
pony
---
rarity_(mlp)
white
purple_hair
blue_eyes
unicorn

that way you can find what your'e looking for more easily.

Well the thing is that the Related Tags doesn't do them by any intelligent relation, just what other tags are posted alongside it- So as you see now, almost every related tag now has MLP and FiM thanks to that, alongside pony and a few of the MLP names. this is really aggravating, when if I'm looking at something, a) I should see similar tags that are related to the tag, and b) I shouldn't be seeing the same related tags 15-20 times in a row just because they're popular.

That said, Snow: I don't have any tags that I use often. I'm most consistantly going through random pictures and just tagging them what they're missing, when i'm retagging, and it's always something different.

new tags should still be able to be created for this reason: new artists or characters the admins/mods don't recognize. or sometimes an artist has drastic style changes or get better at drawing in general. for example; post #69244, post #73492, and post #67625 are all done by the same artist, but some are clearly better than others.

Eeeh.. I imagine you could still find use from some of the basics... for me, they serve as reminder too. my 'first few' are unknown artist, pony, female, male, solo, friendship is magic. Even if I'm uploading non ponies. I remember to hit solo, group, etc, gender, feral-ness etc. I also have some "pet" tags that I try to tag whenever I see them. like tail_button_bottoms. At the moment, I actually have a bunch of stuff for socks, and wallpaper resolutions.

Maybe you should find a project or two to settle down and do, so you can make better use of this feature...

On the other hand, I have a grease monkey scrip that provides groups of commonly used tags.... but I find it rather cumbersome ot use, honestly... as it more covers 'basics' rather then details. still, if you'd like it, I can provide it to you. it has a few typos tough, also.

Think of me more as the guy that gets the stuff that falls through he cracks between projects, than a project guy. :P I appreciate the thought though. It's less a thing for myself and more for an ease of use for other taggers/uploaders who are ususally too lazy to tag their stuff because it involves typing, or are uploading vast amounts and frankly, doing large dumps leaves your brain a little frazzled from the repetitiveness. And then there's those posts that you would tag, if you knew that 'those things' were things to tag (lamp, blank_background, etc. etc. etc). That's more where I think something like that would be nice.

Also, having Related Tags fixed to actually be related to the tag in question. >_>

It's not fair for you to give us dozens of projects and you just trot off to go find more for us, lol.. you're the reason my to do list has about a dozen entries, lol ... arguing about it is the easy part, especially if you're not the one who has to go through several thousand pictures and retag them all ;)

It's mostly common sence sort of stuff.. but.. hmm.. I might have something in mind to make this a bit easier, perhaps... but, it's another Project and a Big One.

I'm pretty sure that there's only so much that can be done. the link probably runs a script and looks for the most commonly appearing tags that also appear with that tag. There's not a way to make it better outside of manually listing every single tag, and trying to figure out what MIGHT be related to it.

and then, how do you judge? I searched for related tags to anhk and got corset, goth, chocker, collar, hooves, horns, piercings... which are all pretty good things. but how do you come up with this list for.. EVERY... SINGLE.. TAG?

that's a terrifying propsition D:

You could just

I don't know

type out all the tags you see in an image. It's not difficult.

Updated by anonymous

Absolutely not, I've seen systems who have tried this.. eventually they all abandoned the idea.

Could we at least have relevant tags attached via related tags?

Easy way would be to have it list any implications (forward and reverse) applicable to that tag, or perhaps tags that share the same letter combination- like when you do a *hair* tag search, and it brings up various things that have 'hair' in the tag.

That's a waste of time. If I tag an image "fellatio" and see that "oral_sex" is a related tag, because it's implied by fellatio, there's still no need for me to add "oral_sex," because it's going to get added anyway when I add "fellatio."

As for the other suggestion, I can't comment on feasibility as I know nothing of coding that isn't MATLAB.

yeah, forward tags wouldn't be a good idea, but reverse would make sense to a degree still. dunno why I said forward.
