Topic: File size increase

Posted under General

Am i the only one who thinks the file size limit here on e621 should be increased? Especially in regard to .gif, flash and webm files.

can you link to any files you'd like to upload but can't because of the size limit?

I'd rather see dynamic file size limits if possible.

  • JPEG/PNG(/etc?): Current limit is fine, superabsurd_res is plenty enough for all purposes of e621.
  • GIF: Current limit is fine, I'd rather not have even larger GIF files, GIF isn't optimized for large scale, lengthy animations with high framerate anyway.
  • SWF: Well... Sure, but with very slight reservation.
  • WEBM: Sure

All those files should be below the file size limit (which apparently is at about 80 MB).

It's really more like 50 MB.

First one can't be uploaded here because there's a pixel limit somewhere around 10k in one direction. That artist actually requested people *not* upload the biggest version elsewhere and to only share around re-sized version anyway...not that it's stopped anyone.

I don't see anything that would stop other two from being uploadable though with the current setup.

I tried uploading the Celestia one in full res, but e621 told me that it was to big.

The limit should be set at 15000x15000, so that shouldn't be a problem.

The upload file size is actually limited via Cloudflare, which I've been informed is actually set at 50 MB. I have no idea why most files under 80 MB seem to work, but it may have something to do with compression.

Would it be possible to upload mp4 files in the future?

Probably not. For what movie files are used for around here, an swf or webm file would be infinitely better than an mp4 file, so there's not much use for it, like being able to upload mp3 files to e6.

But then how will everybody be able to share their horrible, home-brewed music :(

As far as I'm aware there are no immediate plans, but I don't think it would be out of the question from a technical standpoint.

It would be nice.

The GIF at post #749778 is part of a 65.6 mb flash:

Is it possible to upload this file to e6?
(maybe I should just try)

My bad, just based it off the file size/dimensions of posts already here, so there must be more at play, as @parasprite mentioned.

Maybe. If you try it and see a Cloudflare 5xx page you most likely went over the limit. You may see different results with the direct link method, but the upper limit will probably be the same.

It worked.
But why is there no download link for post #750005 ?
"Size: 1280x900 (65.6 MB)" isn't clickable, like it normally is.

Huh, for whatever reason it only makes a link for images. I never noticed that.

I'll make a note to fix that.

What is this link, chopped liver?

Well, that's not the link they're talking about, look to the bottom left where it says: "1280x900 (65.6 MB)", that's supposed to be a link. Having more than one link pointing to the same location is not a crime either, rather the opposite.
