Topic: should I give a reminder to people who arent tagging their posts enough?

Posted under General

most of the time when I'm going through and tagging under-tagged posts, I notice that it is usually one person who is relatively new (I know, my account is new, but I've been lurking for a couple years). should I send them a friendly reminder, or would I be stepping out of my bounds as a basic member by doing that?

That's an issue that's best handled by mods who are more familiar with rules and tagging. The user is more likely to listen to officials rather than normal members.

Just report them and explain what's going on (make sure you link to posts and tag history), and let the higher-ups look into it. They'll probably send a private message to the user in an attempt to help them out - it may or may not come with a neutral warning to point out to other users and mods that this behavior has been observed before. Repeat offenses after that will result in more neutral warnings, and users who seem incapable of learning will start to earn negative warnings and temporary bans.

doesn't reporting have somewhat of a negative connotation? it seems like reporting is more for pointing out misconduct, I don't want them to get into any kind of trouble. just to be notified of the tagging rules.

It may sound bad, but it isn't always bad. In fact, it's possible to report people for behavior that goes above and beyond good.

You could always PM an admin, explaining to them what's happening. However, submitting a report ticket places it in the ticket queue for all to see, and the issue will be resolved faster.

Don't worry about getting users in trouble if its their first time. Neutral warnings disappear after 6 months of no repeated behavior, and it's not like anyone here is keeping score.

The most important part is making sure the user learns, and if you aren't confident in your ability to explain to them how to correct the issue, then let an admin handle it.

It entirely depends on how it's done. When we're talking about something relatively minor, and especially if they seem new to things. It is ok to give a friendly heads up sometimes or share tips and information.

Something like, "I couldn't help but notice your posts have only 2 tags. Wasn't sure if you knew that less than four tags on your upload can actually get you in trouble. I know tags can sometimes seem complicated though, so in case it helps there's a tagging checklist page which is really useful for figuring out what tags to add. Anyways, thought this might help and hope you have a good day!" etc can be fine. But obviously things like insulting them, or threatening to report them or else, or trying to tell them what to do would be bad. And if someone seems like they probably know better but openly don't care, then just report them and let us handle it.

Some situations are best reported, but it is more than ok for users to help each other get the hang of using the site. There is a lot to learn how to do on the site and I wouldn't want to discourage users from helping each other figure out how stuff works. Usually that's a very good thing. So for relatively benign situations, it often depends on what you feel comfortable doing and what seems best given the situation. For more serious situations, it's better to report and stay out of it (especially true if something is escalating dramatically). There's never one size fits all, but that's a pretty good rule of thumb for it.

LESS THAN FOUR TAGS

Shouldn't it be, say, less than ten tags? :/

Less than four tags is against the rules. Less than ten usually means lazy tagging or a minimalistic image. But i wouldn't mind seeing the four tag rule. raised to six. since the rules was made a long time ago. When we didn't have near the amount of implications, as we have now.

I would like to see it raised to ten or eight, but I know people would find that a little harsh. I think six is a bit small, so I'll compromise and suggest seven.

I can get behind raising the minimum to 7.

we should remove all tagging privileges until users pass a 15-Image Tagging Quiz and submit an email explaining why e621 is the best

...That's harsh.

If you're a "good guy greg" personality like me, yes then remind them friendly.

Otherwise report them and admins will give him a record, it's their fetish.

I see no problem with it staying at four as the mandatory minimum. I still think that people should put more than that if they know them, but I don't think it's necessary to make it easier to get in trouble for tagging deficiency. There's enough of that already with it sitting at four.

The four tags minimum is mostly to prevent the worst offenders from leaving the tags blank and harming searches. Even considering the implications in place right now, most users still tag above that (the ones that don't usually leave it blank :V ).

I'm not sure about raising the limit at this point. I'm open to the idea but can't help but be concerned that it would only increase the number of invalid/pointless tags. I don't know if it would actually happen in practice, but it's something worth considering.

This idea's sounding better to me, now. Except for the e-mail part, that dies in a fire. Extend it to posting privileges, because otherwise, they won't be able to tag their own posts, exacerbating the problem.

Also include a mandatory course in basic tagging (Tagging gender, species, common general tags, etc.)

We'll even have different courses, like "JPEG or PNG?" and "What's That Gender?" and even "Identify That Penis!"
