Topic: the world of censorship in video games

Posted under Off Topic

...why not? we already have threads about games AND censorship here so why not add one about the censoring of content IN video games?

heres something i recently came across while looking up stuff on gamefaqs Street Fighter 5 Tones Down Focus on Female Bodies

yep, here we go again with capcom in the spotlight...again. this topic seems to have gotten a lot of attention across youtube, reddit, sites like gamespot and gamefas, and likely a lot of other places.

anyone have any other recent censorship related gaming news to share?

Tell me about it...
I live in Germany, so everything is censored here.
Not just swastikas, but also "violence".
Sex, not so much (this is Old Europe, after all).

wasn't one or more of the wolfenstein games banned in germany? that's not really surprising though given the history and all.

oh and theres also a nearly full petition too. Do not censor Street Fighter V currently at 4,962 supporters out of 5k

Thay grammar and use of question marks gives me cancer. If you are a kid get out of this site. I am writing this on a Sony Xperia J with a screen in litteraly 50+ peices, and the phone is so laggy it adds random letters or takes them away. What I am trying to say is please just look at a comment before you post it. I don't know I guess I am just tired though.

There has always being censorship because people realise that some-things are inappropriate. Now more and more people are realising the negative impacts of treating women like objects.

Well, recently, Nintendo of America decided to remove a boob-size slider from the character creator of Xenoblade X, and they also took out a somewhat skimpy outfit / armor piece for the resident loli. Not sure what to think of that. I can see their point with the 13-year-old (we're simply way more sensitive here when it comes to those), but if people want to give their own playable character DDs that should be their own damn decision to make. I mean, at least if that was a feature originally available.

I don't even think the slider went up into, like, Eiken territory, anyway.

I don't understand why super-violent or sexually explicit games (depending on where you live) are still an issue. Violent and sexually explicit movies are totally okay, but people still get upset when the M-rated game they buy for their kids isn't appropriate for children.

I remember when they toned Ivy from Soul Calibur down, the fans were pretty pissed.

Yet the parents complain when there's a rated M on the front cover of the game... ~_~

And yet both Bayonetta games on the Wii U are completely intact.

I have actually been chewed out by people for playing Street Fighter in front of their children. Yet, said children own a copy of Mortal Kombat X, GTA V, Prototype 1 and 2, and Hatred. The majority of parents I see these days are morons who put their children on pedestals and try to dog out anyone who disagrees. It's little wonder why there are so many little shit kids running around that I hope get their own personal Stelio Kontos

Also It's a bit funny that someone would say censoring women is the opposite of treating them like objects when its usually objects being censored. Example: Sanji's cigarette from one piece was turned into a lollipop. Ironically enough you could still find Tom and Jerry cartoons at the time with them smoking in it.

Though you gotta admit, Ivy was becoming more ridiculously skimpy with every installment, and her boobs just kept growing and her thong moved further and further up her ass. I mean, come on. Her whole evolution was just too blatantly fanservice-y to my taste, by IV it had me wondering if in V she would just show up in a mankini, with knockers the size of skippyballs that would accidentally slip out during a victory pose.

Guess this sums that up best: http://i.imgur.com/lDfCb.jpg

So toning her down was more of a tasteful act than flat-out censorship, I think. Especially considering it's just a retread to something closer to her Soul Calibur (I) look. Was that censorship, too, back then? (not directed at you but those fans)

I know that kind of sounds like I'm contradicting my previous comment about DDs, but in that case we're talking about making a new character yourself, and giving them huge boobs is just optional. That feels different than an already existing and established character moving ever further away from its original design, and the designers constantly trying to one-up themselves, purely because that will draw in more horny teenagers.

Yeah, that's weird too in the grand scheme. Censoring stuff on the one hand and then getting Platinum to make a Bayonetta game exclusively for your console. M'kay. :/

at least america isn't as prudish as thailand, huh?

tbh, i actually never looked into the matter of censorship in games so i really don't have much to add. :/

Damn, even Command & Conquer Gernerals got censored here in Germany, too. Uncensored version was aviable for two weeks (I got it) before they changed nearly the WHOLE game.

changes in german C&C generals

- All infantry changed to cyborgs (robot voices + pictures)
- USA = W(estern)A(lliance) ; China = A(sian)P(act) : and the terrorist faction was changed, too
- Rolling bombs instead of suicide bombers
- Anthrax was replaced by Acid
- Changed city names ("Bagdad" into "Twin Sword City" as example)

Here in Germany, super-violent movies are also on the blacklist if they don't cut out all the "too much gore" stuff.

It's forbidden to advertising these movies and games or even selling them visible in a store. (but it's still legal to sell them under the desk or import them from Austria XD )

C&C...Probotector? that infantry bit sounds like what happened with the EU version of contra hardcore. hmmm...might be interesting to see this version of C&C: Generals. guess i'll head over to youtube and see what i can find.

Lol I totally hear and agree with what you're saying, She was wearing nothing but strings. In reality, those DDs would get in the way of a battle!

(Btw you really got me Rofl with your source: http://hosting11.imagecross.com/image-hosting-65/1515SoulCalibur4ivy.jpg)

SCIII Taki's costume was also pretty absurd, her torso armor covered everything but her boobs! Like, wouldn't you want those to be protected? xD

Anyways about Xeno's boob size option, yeah if this is going for Rated T...then sure, we have games like WWE 2k## with their character creations; created females can have an increase in boob size. I haven't check if Xeno is going for a rated E10+ or not, but I guess a rated E10+ would be important to take out a boob size feature.

Dude...you spoke so much truth...I freaking agree. Though I guess at one hand, I'm lucky most of the time I don't get yelled at for playing Mortal Kombat in front of my 10-5 year old nieces and nephews. Any parent using their children as a defense, is the worst parent. They got no leg to stand on.

And haha, Selio Kontos...I miss watching American Dad. Some kids do get it all though...

Alas, we should not envy nor hate them. They'll learn their lesson, I hope.

I think it really has to do with the rating, Bayonetta was rated M. An older audience, so then Nintendo won't get any blame...but like I discussed before, some parents don't care a pick a rated M game anyway for their kids.

Xenoblade X is for Teens so I guess it was necessary(?) to do so, since Xeno can somewhat target younger audience.

Censorship is never necessary in my opinion. That's what warning messages and ratings are for. If you can't handle it, don't watch or play it. If you are a responsible parent you will watch what your kids play and what you let your kids buy. Now I can understand maybe censoring things on public Television because It is reasonably common to just be flicking through channels and see something you may not want to. However for things that must be purchased or exposed to you by your full consent should need nothing more than a warning of what is to come.

SJWs, ruining everything for everyone without exception. always making everyone suffer because the vocal few dislike something.

F that, people need to stop letting the vocal few push them around and caving into they're BS demands.

so...now they're not even releasing games in certain regions entirely because a few SJWs got triggered or some other bs.

in part, this bit of shocking news reminded me of this video AlphaOmegaSin made titled "Women Video Game Characters Given a "Realistic" Makeover Rant".

speaking of Play-Asia's twitter. went on goggle to check that out and came across that article.

they chose to stand against censorship and now comes a shitstorm. well, aside from the one the initial lack of western release caused.

Munkelzahn said:

and then when you DO help them some of said females will probably hate you because you helped them.

also, couldn't agree with you more, Hiatuss. age ratings are one thing but other than that, censorship in general strikes me as the same as a little old lady putting her hand over a young childs eyes or ears when something even remotely offensive is visible or can be heard. it doesn't do anything to protect the kid, it merely delays them inevitably finding out about such things as they grow up.

take porn and nudity for example. porn should obviously be censored to those under the age of adulthood (whatever that may be considered depending on where on this dumb rock you live) but with non-sexual, plain ol' nudity in general however, i have to ask: why? i mean, you see yourself nude whenever you take a bath/shower/etc. and in the case of public areas (asin japan in some places) both genders in the same area. and in such places people are perfectly fine with it. yet any and all nudity on tv, games, and other sources is treated like something horrible that no one should ever have to see.

i only see censorship as necessary to a certain extent (such as the age ratings) and honestly, these days, we're far beyond that certain extent.

we all probably saw this video coming.

and heres another article with some updates.

that sure is a lot hate brewing under the label of SJW, huh?

oh, this is rich. looks like theres a e-mail campaign on the subreddit KotakuinAction here:[CENSORSHIP] E-mail campaign Koei Tecmo about DOAX3 not being released in the west because of backlash from SJWs.

note: apparently commenting on kotakuinaction comes with the following warning.

WARNING: If you commentor post on KotakuinAction (regardless of the content), a number of subreddits' moderators will automatically ban you from their subreddits. (/r/OffMyChest, /r/Rape (advice for victims of sexual violence), /r/NaturalHair, and others)

Before the introduction of the R18+ rating for video games, any game that would have received it was refused classification and not allowed to be sold in Australia. Mortal Kombat 9 was one of many games that were refused classification. Even with the R18+ rating, games sold here are still censored.

Here's a list.

I'm quite pissed off at the fact that they banned Hotline Miami 2 in this country just because of a scene with sexual violence. Honestly, it should be given the R18+ rating, but people in this country are just way too sensitive to these sorts of things. Hopefully the board reclassifies these games with R18+ ratings in the future or uncensors them.

Well, keep in mind that Austrailia also deports/exiles people who try to bring any kind of food, plant, or animal into the country. I reasoned that it was to prevent ecological disasters from happening. A person on Youtube corrected me, basically adding the word "again" to the end of my reasoning.

Yeah, apparently, Austrailia has had ecological disasters before. And with almost everything trying to kill them, there's no wonder why they're so paranoid: Literally anything could potentially screw over the entire country.

list of games banned in australia

high impact violence, high impact sexual content, high impact gory violence... what exactly do they mean by "high impact"?

like, 50 Cent: Bulletproof, for example:

"Banned due to high impact gory violence.
A censored version was later released."

that's rather vague. it's a vague reason for it being banned and no details on what exactly was censored. o_O not the most informative list they have there.

edit: bigger list

seems china likes to let politics have a strong influence on video games. judging by the list for germany i'd say history plays a big role in what they ban/censor.

woah woah, wait...what? Kuwait, Red Dead Redemption: Banned due to unknown reasons. what? ok... that's strange. and they banned dark souls?

pakistan... -_- i don't think the games needed to do that. >.> just saying. (steretypes aside, terrorists, 'nuff said.)

never played them myself but people seem to dislike the manhunt games in several countries.
