Topic: video ad mayhem

Posted under General

I don't know about the rest of you guys but as of the past few days e621 has started sponsering video ads with sound. If any of you all are like me you open multiple pictures then browse through them. To me this just kinda kills the mood.

How does everyone else feel about these?

Never seen a video ad here or any ad with sound. Screencap or it didn't happen.

A screencap wouldn't prove it has sound though.

I'm pretty sure they have to have the ad's ID code (part of its URI, I think) in order to put in a complaint about it or blacklist it. Next time you get one, leave the page up, view its source, and get the link that's playing.

Well, humor value aside, a screencap would at least show which ad was being offensive, and would show us doubters that some new ads were in rotation that we might be wary of.

forum #10410 is the reason I doubt that sound-enabled ads happen on this site. People who want to advertise submit a gif or a jpg. Last I checked, neither of those file formats permitted embedding audio assets.

Now, what's more likely is that Mr.Spycrabs sits behind one of those ISPs that have recently begun intercepting the traffic of their users and inserting ads into the websites they visit. But the most immediate way I can think of to semi-verify that would be a screencap showing an ad that e621 doesn't place.

Well, I know I'm bordering on spamming the topic at this point, but one last thought: if it is the ISP, a work-around might be to visit this site through https://e621.net or https://www.e621.net.[/quote]
That or an extension would be the problem, like some that add smileys and junk stuff

Wait, wait...an ISP inserting ads? A service you fucking pay for...actually intercepting and modifying your transmissions? To run ads? After you PAID THEM!?

The bloody fuck is wrong with this country...

This sounds like the sort of shit Comcast might pull.

It would, but as a Comcast customer I've never seen it.

ISPs inserting ads has been a thing since at least 2007. Shady shit, I agree.

And adware from something is probably even more likely.

Thank goodness my ISP leverages the trunk lines of the nearby university. If shit like that ever got passed through their cables -- or worse, university pages started getting modified -- the flames of incinerating careers in telecommunications would be seen as plumes across the horizon.

Almost 40,000 students in barely 2,500 acres brings in a whole lot of money to throw around.

Didn't we used to ban people for admitting to blocking ads? I think we should bring that back.

No.

I mean, yes, and no.
