Topic: How Does the Approval Process Work

Ok. So I uploaded quite a few images recently and slowly they've been getting approved either one at a time or in small bursts but. Not all of them. Despite most of them having the exact same type of content and the exact same level of quality throughout.

I'm curious as to what it is that decides whether an image gets aproved or if it's just a sort of subjective process's or more of a specific set of rules that the janitors follow? And I don't just mean the upload policy stuff.

Sometimes things will go for days without being approved and sometimes things will be approved immediately. So I'm genuinely curious about what causes the large discrepancies.

From what I know, approval can very from admin to admin but they generally follow the same rule set that asks:

  • Is it DNP?
  • Does it violate the rules?
  • Does it follow the acceptable uploads?

I suspect when a post goes unapproved for days is when a admin/janitor is sort of middle point of deciding, where they neither want to approve or disapprove, this is where they let another admin decide. If something hasn't been approved for days, it probably has stumped the admins and they would probably take a vote or talk about it(ON A SECRET IRC CHANNEL????).

Don't take what I say for truth though, but I believe this is what actually happens. Plus admining most very likely is not their primary job, so there's also that.

Maybe they randomize the order when searching for pending images? order:random status:pending would allow them to do so, and then they could just check through the list and go through it that way.

I also wonder on why some approved images don't have the name of the approver, like, the field is missing oO

Contributors and higher bypass the approval queue. Are you thinking about that?

Maybe, I honestly had no idea on how that worked.

Can confirm, it always catches me by surprise when my posts are "auto approved", the few times it has happened.

Relevance and quality play big roles in the process of approvals. The more borderlining the relevance and/or quality, the trickier the decision will be and the longer a post will remain unapproved.
If you upload from an artist like Accelo, it won't take long before it's approved because of how straightforward the relevance and quality are.

If the last bullet means relevance and quality, then you are correct.

Both Janitors and Admins take care of the moderation queue. The ones that do this more often usually approve/delete the most while others that do other things sometimes drop by for assistance. The toughest decisions often end up by the Lead Admin.

Every rank above Privileged can upload posts that get auto-approved. See it as something like trust.

Your 3 depleted posts have nothing to do with quality. 2 of them were inferiors and the artist of the other 1 requested a takedown.

Oh, I know why the other ones were deleted, thats not what this was about. It was just in reference to the artwork by messer that I'd uploaded which is very slowly getting approved and I was just curious why some were considered ok already and what the decisionary process itself actually was.

Also @GDelscribe: Your Deleted Posts index (accessible from your profile) is always a good place to check in case something really is deleted as it lists reasons as well.

Edit: Seems I misunderstood as well...

Oh pardon me, I just woke up and thought I read that...
That's usually what this topic begins with, users questioning their deleted posts.

Updated my reply.

Is it normal for SFM/3D pics to take more than 24 hours to get approved though? My money's probably on deletion, at this point though, I wouldn't be shocked it if got deleted =/

It's normal. SFM, 3D and animations tend to take some time to get approved/deleted because it's often hard to judge. They all get through the queue eventually, though.

Hmm, okay, because I feel like I did something horribly wrong is all.

My parent post post #967051 is approved, but half of its children aren't, so I'm pretty much 100% sure that this is actually how it works. ┐( ツ )┌

My shits been getting deleted dispite people actually liking it and it's pissing me off all because it wasn't approved in 30 days. How can an admin not approve in 30 days? Im stumped.
