Topic: Am I doing it wrong? [subscription]

Posted under General

This is about my newly acquired privilege and how to use them subscriptions/ how they workses...

Ok, so I put in "-female -rat ~cervine ~lagomorph ~rodent"

But I still get images like

So, my question is: Am I doing it wrong or has this something to do with what tags were on the image when uploaded and disregards later added tags, or what's going on? xD

sounds like a pretty ineffective system, but I'm sure there is a reason for it...

There should be a "no girls allowed" box that I can tick...

It doesn't have this box to assure that no user with upgraded account is sexist. :P

Seriously though, I've tried myself similar combinations of tags like you, and after reading this help topic came to conclusion how it works. Maybe I'm mistaken.

Reason why it's not allowed to search for everything in there is because

A background process runs every 15 minutes to refresh your tag subscriptions providing you a listing of the 200 most recent posts matching your tags.

but still, another sentence

You can think of a tag subscription as a bookmark to a tag search, but coupled with the full power of e621's tag query engine.

sounds little silly to me.

If I were you, I'd just not use the subscriptions and use RSS instead.

I guess it is more for tagging purposes or something :3

Even for tagging purpose it lacks power. I tried to use it to generate ~<all_ponies_for_mlp_that_supposed_to_be_pegasus> -pegasus and it didn't work.

Cause then you'd get that first or no pegasus.

But say you use it as I do now. I have toned on subscription just because it is such a misused tag. but if I knew other tags that either are overused or something like that I can add that to the same search.

But yeah, it'd be helpful to be able to search for "-female -male -ambiguous_gender" and the like.

To elaborate on my statement, you can get an RSS feed for any search, with the - and ~ and what-not working fine, and you can use something like Thunderbird that will automatically give you the images, so you can look at them right in the little window, save them from there, or click the link to go to the image page.

I'll just conduct normal searches and keep the subscription stuff as tagging help

Yeah, but it still has 8 tag limits, and first thing I've read about subscriptions was "20 tag limit".

You can easily have multiple subscriptions that all come into the one box as if they were a single search. I'm curious as to what on earth kind of search would require that many terms that couldn't be split.

Complicated blacklist, for example. RSS ignores blacklist. If someone hates scat and gore the solution wouldn't be to search separately for -scat, and -gore.

Also, everything once tagged wrongly stays in RSS until you open it, even if it was corrected in the meantime. Searching for badly tagged pic using sub:user:sub_name gives you a list of pics that are still badly tagged in form that is ready for applying tag script.
