I've wanted to subscribe to artists, so I put there names in, but it doesn't ever tell me if they have new art or not. Am I using the subscription option wrong, or is it supposed to be like that?

As said, subscribing to tags/artists is for privileged accounts and above only. I did post about this a few weeks ago in the "Feature Request" section of this forum, they said that they were going to consider bringing it to all users. I still haven't seen any changes though.

Upload lots, tag edit lots on posts that need it (adding useful articles to the wiki is always welcome too), be nice to people and help a few out if they're having trouble, then eventually shout "Hey, look at all these tag edits and uploads I have! :O" somewhere in the blips/forums and hopefully, someone from the staff will take notice.

If you're unlucky though, they'll first just give you a nice-but-useless green record before upgrading your account after months of additional good behavior. :P

So yes, that's quite a circuitous way of just gaining access to artist subscriptions (it's not even really supposed to be used for that, but you can), but apparently we can't give just everyone access since it'll put too heavy a strain on the servers.

I mean, Priviliged comes with some more nice features, but if you simply want tag subscriptions it's a lot of work for just that.

Here is how to do a poor man's tag subscription

One gender, 5 artists. Copy and paste that into About me on https://e621.net/user/edit

Make as many links as you need with 5 artists each, or 6 if you don't care about gender.

Or give them names this way:

The real tag subscriptions listed on my profile don't seem to update often anyway, so you are not missing out on much with this method. buried_frog has posts in February 2016 but the artists_2 tag subscription on my profile shows posts in December 2015 even if I click it.
