Topic: [Discussion] What to do with D621

Posted under Off Topic

Please don't take this as me advertising my website, but rather as a place to discuss what I should do with it.

A few months ago, I purchased the http://d621.net domain from domain.com. Surprisingly enough, it wasn't that expensive.

Since I'm complete birrrbb-shit with Ruby, I tried using a php-based Danbooru clone (MyImouto). However, when the maintainer announced that it would be retiring it, I decided to shut it down (plus I was receiving a lot of traffic from various IPs that were only trying to gain access to WordPress modules I didn't have). For a few weeks, D621 just redirected to an error 404 page.

Right now, it's just a simple gallery hosting a few pictures. There's no tags, no places to upload pictures, etc. I really want to do something beneficial to the furry community, but I don't know I could.

What do you guys think I should do? I'm running a LAMP stack on Ubuntu 16.04. I have 2.5 GB of RAM, and a 2.2GHz single-core AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+. The storage media is a 240GB Solid State Drive.

Obviously, I wouldn't be able to run a full-blown website, but perhaps a tool could help.

Make it explicit art only.

And of the 32 (or so) pictures on the gallery already (if not all), most of them are NSFW pictures anyways... Perhaps I should keep it that way.

E621 sublet for male only art? "D"621?

That would be a cool... I should look into that. That's kind of what the php booru was about, but I was the only one uploading pictures I had downloaded. It was very time consuming, and I just didn't know what to do about the Wordpress fail-hackers. Maybe I could use the E621 API to only pull male results...

I'd make it a video hosting site, like a furry YouTube.

A separate site for all things animated wouldn't be a bad idea, since it would be useful to have an alternate account just for favoriting (and thus organizing) videos.

I'm not knocking the idea that it'd be a cool idea, but with just a 240GB SSD, a 5Mb/s upload speed (home networks, gotta love them) and only 2.5 GB of RAM, you'd be waiting for ages just to load 5 seconds of a 140p video... Maybe when I get the money to buy better equipment I'll look into that.

Yeah, you really need a proper server setup before d621 could be considered a reasonable image hosting website. You'd need a whole lot more storage for one thing, either a few terabyte HDDs or a bunch of 500/250 HDDs. You can get them online for a fairly cheap price, but avoid Seagate HDDs otherwise you'll need to replace them within a year a so. It would also be important to keep regular backups, in case of hard drive failure.

Not necessarily... for what I'm hosting now, it works alright, but if I wanted to host a free-to-upload imageboard software solution like Danbooru, I'd definitely want to look into a Linux VPS Webhost service.

Not to mention starting a GoFundMe or Kickstarter to raise the funds for the hosting fees. I'm broke... lol

You can find a 6 terabyte drive on amazon for relatively cheap. They go from 100 to 300 USD. The Core2 Quad processors are fantastic, and you can find them relatively cheap. You can make a small site server for around 800 smackers with a couple of core2 quads, two 6TB drives, and around 16GB of RAM. Check this out, you might be able to benefit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epIlB49SNTI

Like I had mentioned in my OP, I would only want to use D621 for hosting a tool of some kind (like http://iqdb.harry.lu) to benefit the fandom (or at least the E621 community) in some way. While the idea of having my own realistic server hosting a beneficial tool for the community right from my desk, I couldn't see running any kind of true image/video hosting service over a 5Mb/s upload speed connection. I would have to up my upload speeds to something like (at least) 25Mb/s. Plus, not to mention that I don't have any kind of income at this point, let alone years of server management. I just want to create a little experiment until I can get to a point where network hardware/connection(s) aren't a problem.

E621 dating site

Holy shit that could actually be done.

Oh gosh, yes. This.

...Why?

I mean, a forum could be possible. Forums aren't media-rich (unless you want another ychan... and no), so all the server would be serving is text and the interface.

But a dating site? I don't mean to repeat, but why? I mean "D"621, but isn't that what FurFling is for? I wouldn't even know where to get the software necessary to run a dating site.

I agreed mostly because it was funny.

Gallery is still accessible from the same place, but I added a JavaScript redirect to avoid potential unauthorized access attempts.

What do you guys think of this rule?:

Is it too strict, or am I just a big softie?

I'd replace any "will" with "can", within a statement that they can be temp-banned instead of perma, and the 1w ban for temp, while good for most things, should be specified to 3 days to 1 week or worse.

Logically, you set minimums and maximums to hold against variables when it comes to offensives. Personally, I hate seeing people get kicked out permanently and I abso-fucking-lutely hate that big ass "you are banned" reminder whenever you are logged on.

Obviously, this is interpreted. "Ban" and "blocked", etc., are used too similarly for determining severity, so I've assumed that ban is permanent always.

You can sample rules from just about any forum board and pick and choose the rules from there - there are plenty of sites with well-stated rules. Anything you can't find on a board you can make yourself.

No problem. In between working on TheHuskyK9's request I'm working on a new front page based off of E621's. E621 is open source, right?

Should be... I think it runs off a combination of Danbooru and the legacy Moebooru, but I think I might be wrong. Might want to ring up KiraNoot.

And apologies to everyone for the new thread I had tried to start. I wanted to keep things organized, but didn't realize I was essentially asking the same exact thing.

That was unnecessary.

I meant no harm, I wasn't calling him out or anything, I just thought it was humorous to have a discussion on one forum and ask the exact same question on the forum he was having a discussion about on the very same forum.

Unless I misunderstood what he stated.

It's a fork of Danbooru, but it isn't open source. If you want to run something similar I suggest just going with Danbooru and customizing it. The newer one based on Rails 4.x is fairly nice, but you're going to use quite a bit of CPU and memory running it.

I meant the HTML and CSS of the front page. I'm editing the code and adding my own resources based off the original.
