Inner tube is the inflatable tube that's inside bicycle or bike wheels. I've never heard it used for anything else.

...do people really use that term for swim rings and other flotation devices? Sounds like some kind of country-specific slang.

IIRC the reason why it's called inner tube is that it literally often came from a tire's inner tube back in the days. However since I don't normally speak english I can't really comment on day to day modern use, though strangely enough I actually thought that was what it was called. So what do people generally call it?

Swim ring or river tube, depending on the type.
But yeah, looks like some people still use actual inner tubes. Mostly truck-wheel sized ones.

Circular object therein air inside makes object buoyant...

But, in reality, I think the one used for children is just floatie, and the one used for adults (for rescuing, at least) is floatation device. There is also some slang names for the last one (lifeguard ring, the others escape my mind), but that's the professional term.

I've always thought that floaties are a broader category that also includes inflatable mattresses and other things that you can lie on. Whereas swim ring is the specific type that is worn around waist. I might be wrong about that.

Anyway, as for the alias: since inner_tube is the most popular of those tags, there's probably no good reason to not alias them. Even though it might sound off to a portion of the userbase.

I doubt that anyone's going to search for bike inner tubes.

Actually, that's the statement: the children's pool toys for keeping afloat all have the common name "floaty(ie)". Then there is stuff like the foam noodle, that you can squirt water out of by blowing into, and the rest that escape my name because I haven't swimmed in over two years...

I've never heard of it being called a swim ring or river tube. We always call it either a floatation device or an inner tube here.

I guess the real question should have been; should we just call it inner_tube, or should we use something else. Swim ring sounds like an alternative. But I guess it doesn't really matter that much.

Also, I knew I had discussed this before, but never got any feedback on that. I got a little list of related terms summarized here: forum #169100

That'd make one lousy yet funny tag.

Actually, pool toy as an alias might work.
