Topic: What is your favorite "irreverent" humor...

Posted under Off Topic

irreverent : adj. - "showing a lack of respect for people or things that are generally taken seriously."

I also accept "weird" ....

A lot of these I am probably ~not~ going to be able to find Youtube links for or whatever, so if you wanna watch them, you'll probably have to find them yourself unless I get lucky and find uploads.

I'll start off with my absolute favorite.

"Wonder Showzen"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1AHDNTXYSA

Think Sesame Street but instead of the puppets teaching kids about letters and numbers, the puppets harass random people, go on bizarre adventures, and the ~kids~ they get to work in the show watch oldstock footage and make ad-lib jokes sorta like Mystery Science Theatre 3000.

There are also pretty ridiculous parodies of common or sometimes obscure kids TV shows. I mean, they did a spoof around Slim Goodbody (a show on PBS with the guy in the insideout skinsuit who teaches kids to excercise and eat right) and I haven't seen that since I was like, 8, hahaha...

My favorite part was when they did the Muppet Babies parody.

"Rick and Morty"

This one is relatively recent, made by Justin Roiland of the old DIY skit website "Channel 101" ~ the stuff he made before Rick and Morty is pretty freakie, and makes R&M look tame by comparison, but still, great show. Sorta if you mixed Doctor Who with... I dunno. Adventure Time on lots of drugs and no sense of shame. The art and colorfulness / strangeness of the characters is similar and that's the only reason I make that comparison.
.
.
"Mister Pickles"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDa9DVuwRDc

Hooooooooly shizzle sticks... it's like Morel Orel but with a satanic dog that speaks in backmask (reversed audio) and can control other animals to make them do his will. The whole plot of the show seems to center around the Grandpa, who nobody believes, trying to get the police and the family to believe him when he says Mister Pickles did [insert crazy outlandish thing].
.
.
"Morel Orel"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30R3C3FFRE8

Awesome claymation spoof of old Christian kids' shows like Davey and Goliath. The funny stuff usually involves Morel misinterpreting the preacher's sermon and doing something weird.
.
.
"Mary Shelly's Frankenhole"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gg6pUyE_u0E

My bf actually showed me this one, til then, I hadn't heard of it. Pretty funny show, Doctor Frankenstein has time portals in his house or something so he can talk to people from the past and sell them stuff or something.... it's done in stop-motion animation and everything looks like papercraft.
.
.
"Drawn Together"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yk9Zb71bxm8

Some people hated this show, but I kinda liked it, some of it wasn't all that great, but it had its moments.
.
.
"BBC's Mongrels"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mG76I7DpT8

Wow, I am almost 100% certain that Destiny's song is supposed to be a riff on Lilly Allen. Sounds so similar.

All the main characters are furry puppets.
.
.
"Brass Eye"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwylBRucU7w

It's a fake news, fake documentary show done up to look like those "panic stories" you see that are supposed to get people outraged about something. Here's a clip, but the full episode is actually funny as a whole.... if the clips interests you, look up more of the full eps. Good stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx4ixXQFUQY
.
.
.
"Monkey Dust"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCywGhHQMEw

I actually didn't dig this one so much when I was first shown it, but the Paedodfinder General skits totally got me sold on it.
.
.
"Metalocalypse"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3a5pFbpjSY

I don't really consider this one ~too~ irreverent, or twisted, or whatever, but it's still funny from time to time. Especially some of the songs...
.
.
"Ugly Americans"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rOc2zZMNU4

Dude lives in Hell, and works for The Devil. I wish I could find more and better clips, cuz it's actually a pretty funny show.
.
.
.
"Super Mansion"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faJaL8XMhBM

Apparently this is made by the people behind Robot Chicken, which explains the stop-motion appearance of the show. Think of a Justice League parody with aging superheroes. It's pretty funny, and I like "Cooch" the catgirl, reminds me of Cheetarah if she were a trailer hick. Holy shit, Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad is in this? Damn, I thought Titanium Rex sounded somewhat familiar.
.
.
.
I haven't mentioned Family Guy, cuz meh, I kiiiiiiiinda like Family Guy, I guess, but I prefer American Dad (less cut-away jokes, actual plots and I think Roger the alien is hilarious).
.
.
Oh yeaaaaah, I almost forgot Bojack Horseman, it's kind of alright. Jesse from Breaking Bad is also in that one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wUQAc4OfAU
.
.
.
Does anyone else besides me remember Daria?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdZsqZKT3oY
.
> Nevermind, people actually do.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zq1D6xSQ8Ok
That makes me rather happy.

I haven't seen anything on your... list, but my guilty pleasure, you could say, is Helsing Abridged. Pretty darn irreverent I'd say. They've done such a good job with it so far, and I've always been a bit of a fan of Nowacking. Can't wait for the next one.

Alucard: *sniff* *sniff* Huh?! Suddenly it reeks of hypocrisy in here. [Anderson walks in] Oh, if it isn’t the Catholic Church! And what’s this?! No little Timmy glued to your crotch? Progress!

Moral Orel was great. In top 5 comedy shows for sure, and introduced me to the Mountain Goats whilst rewatching the series on youtube (2010 was the summer of antifolk...Tallahassee is such a great album).

What's funny is how it was the pet project of Mr. Show alum Dino Stamatopoulos, and you can definitely tell much of the humor comes from the same vein.

In fact the Sad Songs Are Nature's Onions episode of Mr. Show still has one of my favorite segments of all time, especially once you actually get the music references they're making (like Clapton's Tears In Heaven or the typical Brian Wilson sound, fuckin dead-on)

I'm watching this now, freaking beautiful how they nailed the Beach Boys sound. Love it...

Mr. Show, David Cross was in that, right? Yup, here he is. I see him. David Cross was also in the "Horse Apples" skit in Wonder Showzen (Horse Apples is supposed to be a rip on shows like Hee-Haw, but all of the characters on the show are redneck stereotypes).

Ohhhh, here's another goodie, didn't last long, sadly... (this was a show that the Lonely Island fellas tried to pitch to Comedy Central, they didn't like it, hahaha).... but damn, that intro theme always cracks me up when it gets to the "violent rap" part, hahahahaha....

Political satire, usually American.

That would include Jon Stewart and his many disciples, but I stopped watching them because they were too lite. Specifically, I relish in biting commentary and divisive expression (i.e., rhetoric that challenges the listeners' ability to suppress kneejerk moral qualms in favor of accepting or debating a greater truth). It's not that I am only interested in American political satire; rather, my immediate alternatives just don't hit as hard. For instance, Rick Mercer is pretty good at what he does, but I'd want him to up the critique and cut down on the "fun" bits. On the other hand, Colbert had some really sharp, inciting conversational barbs on The Colbert Report, but those were fairly sporadic highs.

So, no, I don't follow the above. The only comedian or comedy show I follow is Real Time with Bill Maher, of which I record every new episode on the PVR. Good shit for me to wake up to. More than half of the show isn't comedy-oriented and I don't think he's necessarily funnier than his peers, but he's probably the most sincere of them all and I like his show most of the time. Sometimes the discussions are very good, occasionally he brings on a very intelligent and impressively well-spoken guest, and the content and comedy is very topical. To the point of irreverence, he's pretty uncompromising about offending both the right and the left when one side can't stomach the joke.

Case in point: liberal, conservative, and tea party erotic fiction.

I don't follow him and I don't think we even get his show here, but here's a small shout-out to Eric Andre. His comedy is highly irreverent to those expecting the typical late night comedy show routine, which is his whole shtick, to the point where he puts the viewer and those he performs his gags on in that awkward, uncomfortable space. While not necessarily demonstrating that point, here's two short clips from his show that I particularly liked: Ranch It Up and Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire.

Someone for whom "irreverent" is just a euphemism for "unashamedly prejudiced."

I totally forgot The Heart, She Holler... It's made by the same fellers who created Wonder Showzen (PFFR) and it's got Patton Oswalt in it. That show is deliciously twisted.

Oh come on, it's PFFR... the only ~crappy~ show they've ever done was Xavier: Renegade Angel. Heartshe Holler is like, a redneck soap opera. It's pretty funny, give it and Wonder Showzen a chance... plz??? **makes puppy dog eyes at you**
