Topic: Can't upload image; need answers

Posted under General

Yesterday, I tried to upload a new image I had made, but for some reason, the page redirected to a 502 error, stating the website to be offline. However, to my confusion, I could navigate throughout the website with no problem whatsoever.

I repeated the attempt three more times throughout yesterday, getting the same result each time. I tried again this morning, only to get the same goddamn "bad gateway" error.

The website only 502's when I click the "upload" button of my image, and it's getting very frustrating. Can anybody help me with this?

I'm not sure why that happens sometimes, but the one time I encountered it (on image others had also been unable to upload) I altered a single pixel, re-saved, and was able to upload.

I have gotten that two times myself. Problem both times were that I was trying to upload flash file which had corrupted header, meaning site couldn't get dimension information and 502 on me. With other scenario I gave up, with other one I was able to remove the corrupted part with some flash tools and hex editor and clearly stated what I had done to file in post.

If you made the image yourself, try resaving it if you have it as source file (psd, xcf, etc.) and see if that works. If you save it as png, try optimizing it with PNGgauntlet. 502 might also be temporary thing, so you can try going to previous page and pressing upload again.

I would also give the file having problems to site staff, so they can inspect why it's happening, to avoid having it happening in future.

Problem with this method is that if you aren't artist yourself, you are altering someone elses work. Visually it's most likely just fine, but MD5 hash changes at that point.

There was an issue with one of the app servers yesterday that caused ~20% of uploads to fail with a 500 error related to being unable to open a .upload file. That might've been it, and it's fixed now.

If you still can't upload the file, we'd love it if you could host it somewhere else and link it here so we can see what's causing it.

Are you trying to upload from that URL, or from the Direct url?

Uploading from that URL directly will not work anyway as it isn't whitelisted here.

Even if it was, that's the wrong URL. Google preview window always generates preview image on googles servers end to match the preview window, that's why "w772-h699" in the url and it changes if you resize browser window. They seem to have server power to do that.

To get the original, you have to click "more" and "download" (or similar, can't get this thing to english in any way) and even that version might already be compressed by google if user haven't changed the settings from google photos website/app. And it automatically downloads the image, so it has to be loaded to local memory. In this case JPG image with MD5 of 3AB4E60FFD479D011B3F032D5B91325D should be correct one.

I'm actually trying to upload the image from my computer.

Does the file have any unusual characters in its name, or any of the folders going into it? Alphanumerics and a few other characters, such as underscores, spaces, dashes, and slashes, are fine, but some characters freak the system out.

I've tried uploading this image various ways to my testing environment as well as the live site and could not reproduce any failures.

What browser/OS extensions?

I use Google Chrome. The only extensions on it are Skype and Adblock Plus.
