Topic: Does anyone here play Magic : The Gathering?

Posted under Off Topic

I'm asking from a purely statutory standpoint, but I really am curious.

I've noticed a lot of people used to play it, and stopped for one reason or another; anyone like that, I'm curious when they started and stopped, and why.

I've taught about four people how to play - at least, the basics of how to play - and I tend to wonder how many other people actually indulge in it.

My friend got me into it sometime in the fall last year, but I only ever play with him and a few other friends, and even then, only rarely.

I've played it on the online thing, and have been thinking I should play it again, but haven't gotten around to it.

I really like the Ravnica sets. Got a deck built around each of the guilds (poor man's decks, but they do decently).

A member of my family got me into it. Don't know how long ago though. We don't live in the same city and I don't know anyone else who plays it so games are super rare for me. Unless I play online but thats just not the same.

I started in Odyssey and stopped after Time Spiral for various reasons. I've played a few matches online after that but not too much really.

What I like about the game is that it allows for a lot of creativity and expression when building decks. I particularly enjoyed building tribal decks around unconventional creature types. I was never a fan of competitive play and most of my experience is with kitchen table play and casual formats like commander/EDH.

The main reason I quit the game is because it's too expensive in the long run. I could buy several new board games for the same price as a magic deck and probably have more fun for the money that way. And while the deckbuilding aspect of MTG is very enjoyable, I feel that Android: Netrunner provides more interesting gameplay and is cheaper as well.

I used to play a few years back, but stopped when other things caught my interest. Still have all my cards laying around somewhere though, so I could start up again if the intrest is resparked. Before that I played the YuGiOh card game and still have all of my old cards for that laying around too.

Glad to see a lot of the themes are fairly common; price is prohibitive, and online play not being quite the same experience.

Might I recommend Cockatrice?
It's a free tabletop MTG simulator that's kept remarkably up-to-date.

The steam game Magic Duels is also a valid option, but it has a lot of problems; it's based on a even more restrained Standard format (most recent sets only), no in-game chat, F2P mechanics are sin.

I'm also willing to offer a few people a rundown of how to get those working and how to play. Mostly because I haven't played with anyone I 'know' at all since I lost my job.

I love Magic: The Gathering! I have more Magic Cards than I have Pokemon cards and as most elementary kids do I had a lot of pokemon cards to say the least. Same goes for YuGiOh. Would love to play it more often, I have taught it more times than I have played it oddly enough and made more decks for others than myself.

To a degree. I got 'into it' with a friend a couple years back. Learned the basics, went to a draft night, had fun, was quite gobsmacked at how draft can get you some cheap-ish cards. But the act of actually going to the place where it was on wasn't really my jam, I didn't know others (yes, I'm aware of that being a cyclical problem :P ) , was often too busy or otherwise preoccupied, and especially lately (urban rent crisis!) I just haven't had the funds to get into another hobby.

I do get my fix via the Duels of the Planeswalkers games. Until recently they were a yearly release that was quite cheap, and came with a number of decks. You started out as a basic pre-built deck, and every victory you unlocked another card to swap in or out, and as each deck grew there were 2 or sometimes 3 directions you could take it and 'build around'. That mechanic and sense of pace kept me satisfied unlocking cards one at a time rather than making me want to go for the microtransaction to get all the cards at once. It really cues you in to the scope of each colour. For example, in the 2014 game there was one green deck for Garruk, which focused on consistently large monsters per mana cost, and on some spells for board control - 'hunting', essentially. Meanwhile there was a Chant of the Mul Daya green deck which focused on immense Eldrazi monsters and various ways to mana ramp.

I might give the current F2P steam iteration a shot, but I hear it's buggy, and I'm still occasionally plugging away at 2014 first. 2015 was a bit shite apparently. Plus it's also worth mentioning I've recently got into Hearthstone, also f2p, but its weekly brawls and production values keep it afloat. It's like a more streamlined and faster-paced MtG.

Used to. Not crazy into it, more just with friends and having fun. Lost most of my cards in the house fire we had 3 years ago, not really been driven to try again since then

*Cringe* Ow shit that sucks. At the very least I hope no one you knew was hurt.

Xmage is also an option. And something I messed around with when Cockatrice went down for a while. Its an alright system.

My buddy also went through the same thing when his apartment caught fire.
Hopefully, at least no one got hurt.
