Topic: Why are creepy comments forbidden?

Posted under General

This is (primarily) a porn site, so I don't understand why we can't post comments like "I'd totally love to crawl up her smelly anus and rub my big, long, thick, hard, dripping, throbbing cock against her bowel lining".

Is it because there are females on e621 who might get offended?

Updated by Snowy

I think it has more to do with the fact that creepy comments may hurt the reputation of the site. I also think it may make artists steer clear of the site and request their images be removed.

You mean the mean the reputation of "Don't worry we have that fetish somewhere" and "We have ponies as well"

More like the reputation that we are one of the only sites that actually give a fuck about the DNP list.

See, the thing is, e621 is one of the only furry image boards that actually enforces the DNP rule. Sites like Yiffy.cz and Xbooru don't give two fucks about SexyFur or Hardblush. Here, we know that sort of thing can cost us a ton. IMO, creepy comments are also just the thing to make us never, ever want to look at anything on the site again.

Updated by anonymous

Because why should people be creepy anywhere other than the privacy of their own homes? We don't need people spamming their creepiness here.

Updated by anonymous

Comments are meant to be at least somewhat relevant.
You being creepy is not relevant.

Well i for one dont want to be seeing people talking about what they would like to do to some image, or whatever, its your business keep it in your own head. Any time ive ever looked at porn vid's and seen the comments it always makes my skin crawl. Sure i paw off to porn too...but i dont need you telling me what YOUR doing.

Creepy comments on FA and other sites make my brain hurt :c

Creepy comments are disallowed to remove a thing that may cause artists and/or character owners to have their art removed from the site. Some people do not like it when others talk about their creations in that way.

I didn't think it was because of a hugbox-type thing. I though that if we allowed creepiness, then people would be more inclined to post about whatever they'd want to do to whomever, and it would quickly turn into spam on every explicit image.

pretty much everyone has said... It's actually creepy when people do it...

I despise DNP enforcement, but I understand why it's done. As to creepiness, it's very simple: Enforce that rule, or become gelbooru. Go look at that site for a few minutes, and then come running (and screaming) back here.

Updated by anonymous

I can only speak for myself, but creepy comments detract from my enjoyment of the images they're attached to. Yes, even pornographic images, and even when the comments are ones I agree with. Creepiness is even worse if those two conditions don't hold.

Updated by anonymous

When I first saw e621 I was really surprised by the quality of the comments section, being a former member of FA. And FA's comments have been getting nothing but worse since then, with no rules to keep that shit away.

Char

Former Staff

Basically as others have already said here, we disallow creepy comments because we don't want other users to be discouraged from commenting, who would otherwise post much more interesting comments. If the comments on a picture are nothing but people talking about how much they want to fuck some character in the picture, that's 1) boring, 2) doesn't really encourage better comments from others, and 3) likely to be viewed very negatively by someone that claims that character as their own persona, who then might want to have the image removed.

It's a combination of trying to keep art on the site, while also trying to bump comments up a notch in terms of quality. And there's no sense in risking losing artwork over comments that we don't even want people making to begin with.

Updated by anonymous

Well, if you're trying to bump up the quality of comments, why not make poorly spelled ones against the rules, too? XD

Perhaps an auto-spellcheck feature for the comment/forum posts?

Spellcheck only works so well. It'd never be able to sort out the homonym distinctions people seem to have so much trouble with (your/you're; there/their/they're). Plus if it were automatic it'd result in things like this.

More likely, because most other countries could give less of a shit about copyright laws regarding furry pornography....(czech republic's pretty badass, he really doesn't give a shit.)

I think czech republic is a pretty cool guy. Eh posts porn and doesn't afraid of Russia.

Homophone: Phonetics. a word pronounced the same as another but differing in meaning, whether spelled the same way or not, as heir and air
A homophone is a word that is pronounced the same as another word but differs in meaning. The words may be spelled the same, such as rose (flower) and rose (past tense of "rise"), or differently, such as carat, caret, and carrot, or to, two and too.

Robot Chicken Homo nyms
Homonyms - spelled the same but have different meaning. ;)

Homonym Homophone
Examples: Can as in "Can I help you?" and can as in "Here's a can of beans." Fourth and forth
Introduction (from Wikipedia): In linguistics, a homonym is one of a group of words that share the same spelling and the same pronunciation but have different meanings, usually as a result of the two words having different origins. A homophone is a word that is pronounced the same as another word but differs in meaning. The words may be spelled the same, such as rose (flower) and rose (past tense of "rise"), or differently, such as carat, caret, and carrot, or to, two and too.

What are you getting at? "you're"/"your" and so forth -are- homophones, pronounced the same (in most accents, anyway) with different meanings.

Because no one wants to be a barbados... no one.

What about educated creepyness?

Mario583 said:

lol I know... Homophone comes from homo, which is "same" and phone which is "sound". Same goes to Homonym, which suffix nym is "word".
So Homophone = phone who is gay same sound, Homonym = same word.

Edit: Same can apply to sexual preferences. Like homosexual same sex, which can apply to both men and women. So if a girl is a lesbian, it can be said that she's homosexual as well.

There, now it's a spelling argument.

Edit: since you're afraid to look up brrbrrdrrs, he's user #18438, and you can see some of his lovely contributions to this site here (vaginally), and his persistence can be seen here, and I should really not be doing that much comma splicing.

You do that with

string.splice(",");

It isn't a comma-splice if you added a conjunctive.

The problem is more about stylistic grammar than proscriptive grammar.

Dumbing down the language? That's how they're pronounced. Those U's serve no purpose.

I think creepy comments are forbidden because you risk ruining someone else's fap. Not everybody looks at the same porn and thinks about doing all of the same things you do.

I've said this many times throughout my life:

English always makes sense. Except when it doesn't.

English follows its rules... when it feels like it. Other times, it follows some other language's rules. The rest of the time, English will arbitrarily create new rules just because it can.

Updated by anonymous

How did that one guy put it?

The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.

Updated by anonymous

English is an incurable kleptomaniac. It steals from everyone, including itself.

That is excellent advice which I shall ignore for the foreseeable future.

Well, that escalated quickly

Actually, I try not to be pedantic for the sake of being pedantic. I care about proper spelling, because it is easier to read words that are properly spelled. You can recognize words by their shape, most of the time, and misspellings get in the way of that. I care about using words properly when it impedes clarity - the fight about the usage of "literally", for example, seems to be lost, but if "literally" is used to mean "figuratively" all the time, what word can we use to flag usages that appear to be figurative but are actually, well, literal? And I will be pedantic as hell if I think it's funny (which is more often than not, but I have an odd sense of humor). But picking fights over language for the sake of the "purity" of language is foolish. And sometimes, the accepted constructs strike me as wrong. That fucking quotation mark rule, for example, in which all punctuation should go inside of quotation marks. I hate that. Everything inside quotation marks should be character-for-character correct (unless you escape with square brackets), and putting punctuation in there that wasn't in the original just rubs me wrong. Lincoln didn't say, "Four score and seven years ago." He said, "Four score and seven years ago". The sentence continues on after the quote in the original, and putting the period inside the quotation marks is misleading!

Huh. I got ranty. I must really want to procrastinate on this paper...
