Topic: Oldies vs Source

Posted under General

How old images must be to have priority over source images.

What I mean is, that my Pixiv Source images are being deleted in favor of Pixiv generated preview images (because of larger size).

Last time I asked about it, I got an answer that source images are kept unless there is a preview image that is old old old mega old.

I really wish we could just keep both and skip the deletions. The software doesn't support anything that elegant now (unfortunately) but I hope I can push for a solution in the future.

Ok, but that doesn't answer my question.

It's not a matter of age.

It's really difficult (especially when queue is getting a lot of influx) to figure out if something is preview vs source. We often have to simply rely on the image stats and a visual comparison to see if one has obvious signs of up-sizing or not.

I find the difficulty particularly relevant for pixiv as that site is a royal pain for me.

I've never heard anything about there being any exceptions to the Best One Remains rule. The actual image should be the one that gets kept.

I'm talking about manual flagged images being deleted here, and its super easy too.
Original : http://i3.pixiv.net/img-original/img/2016/10/11/15/31/54/59423162_p1.png
Preview : http://i3.pixiv.net/c/1200x1200/img-master/img/2016/10/11/15/31/54/59423162_p1_master1200.jpg

Might not be the best example since is png vs jpg, png is slightly larger here. But in case of .jpg vs .jpg preview is always larger and because of that originals got deleted.

They do when you're logged in to Pixiv. Yes, Pixiv is one of *those* sites that block direct image links if you're not logged in to their service. It's one of the many reasons I wish it were abandoned in favor of other lossless image gallery sites (Weasyl, Inkbunny, Sofurry, etc.), and the difficulty of determining between preview and true source is just another bullet point in a laundry list of complaints.

Direct link won't allow you to view content even if you are logged in and on their website, they do allow it to be view at any time, you just need to have referer.

Altho yeah, It takes a few clicks to get to source image (or simply editing the link)

I can't even process the logic behind that. Having referrers turned off, I've never seen breakage on any site, including banking ones. It boggles the mind that an art gallery site would do that for a direct image link--legal reasons maybe? Wanting to collect data about you by forcing site navigation and creating a map of how you interact with it? That's just super sketchy.

Just leaving this here: https://danbooru.donmai.us/wiki_pages/15485
Also saying that pixiv, while being the most pita in this kind of thing, ain't the only one. Also feels like we should also have wiki pages for every single site hosting anthro art because of this. Actually have some level of table on my profile bio.

I have this itch that I'm certain that I have seen the age being one of the factor in determining which post of the dublicates stay when it's same resolution with no clearly visual differences.

I would imagine on top of stopping hotlinking, making users to have to go trough the actual site to view stuff.
Pretty sure that's also why they have their ugoira system for animations: forcing you to actually get on their site and watch things there.

Ugoira is an impressively evil and obnoxious invention.

Wish I'd thought of it. >:D

Yeah it's annoying that the preview images can get bloated and end up with a bigger filesize. I haven't bothered to upload any originals I found with lower size simply because I don't think it would be worth the effort arguing that the original is better.
