Topic: How to kindly remind people about gender tags?

Posted under General

An issue that many of you have probably seen me bitching about in the comments of some pictures, is that some people (mainly newer users) forget or downright refuse to add gender tags to their pictures. While gender tags are not required, it is often considered a general courtesy of those of us who use our blacklists religiously, but I've gotten to the point where reminding people about the gender tags is robotic and insincere.

How do I point out the necessity of gender tags to those who often forget, don't know about, or are generally ignoring the gender tags? Will there ever be a rule requiring that users put male, female, intersex, ambiguous_gender or the equivalent of "no characters visible"?

"hey, could you please try to remember use gender tags in future?"

"no characters visible" is zero_pictured just FYI.

I felt like it was something like that.. Thanks!

Every time I try to be sincere with people, they just normally respond back with something among the lines of "In the time it took you to make this comment, you could've just fixed it yourself!". I want people to learn how to tag genders so people like us don't have to go in and do it for them.

Not like it's their job. They can put any four tags they want and just leave. :/

That's besides the point. I could just make a mess in the break room and let someone else clean it up, but that would be inconsiderate. Same deal here.

That's mostly because people don't like being told what to do and can't be bothered fixing their mistakes. Don't let that stop you, though.

Well, that's just the difference between you and jerks. Nothing you can do about it.

I can't possibly be the only one who has a problem with this, can I?

Just because you don't know how to help doesn't mean that it's not possible.

Meh... I've dealt with that shit for so long that it doesn't phase me anymore.

That's understandable, but I'm not a dismissive kind of person...

Welcome to e621, buddy.

Well, you should fix their errors. Call them out on it, yes, but also fix it yourself. Leave no room for them to fix their own problems, be condescending by babying them.

Wait a moment. Does that mean you are telling them that they forgot the gender tags without fixing the tags yourself?

No wonder people react badly. Tagging is everyone's responsibility, not just theirs. Fix the tags first, and then let them know that they've omitted some important tags - assuming they make a pattern of it, anyway.

If it's just a single mistake and they usually remember, then just fix the tags and move on.

If people are reacting badly when you're pointing things like this out, the problem is probably on your end.

I see those kinds of comments downvoted often.

I say edit the tags, leave a polite comment if you want, and ignore any backlash.

You never know the reason a gender tag wasn't added. I know I have forgotten to add it once because of focusing on adding obscure tags. I caught the mistake hours or days later.

Faux-Pa never said he didn't/wouldn't tag it himself. I'm sure the request to add gender tags to uploads is only for users who repeatedly leave them out since it'd be a bit unfair to nail someone after missing the tags once.

Gender tagging on e6 is a loaded issue. This alone is enough to nope out and just skip this nonsense. Like, I'm not getting my hands dirty, feel free to do it yourself.

See, I just can't get myself to tag ambiguous_gender on every single S-rated image with no exaggerated human-specific sexual features. For me ambiguous gender is when you pull its pants down and spend five minutes wondering what the fuck, figuratively speaking. Not when it lacks visible breasts despite being a reptile. So I just leave it out.

I always felt a good "tag your shit" works well enough.

I would remove that ammunition ahead of time by fixing the tag myself and wording my request in future speak:

"Please remember to tag genders. I've updated them on this image but there's no guarantee I or someone else will catch them in the future. Thanks!"

This. Also, consider having a quick check as to whether this is a constant/regular thing for them. I'm typically a very thorough tagger, but because I'm usually distracted with the more abstruse tags, I sometimes forget the basics, and when I get reminders like that, I find it insulting on multiple levels.

Cub/young _are_ mandatory tags if they are relevant, though.

Yeah... I just comment whenever it happens, and I don't intend for it to be insulting. I added both breasts and vagina to my blacklist, so if a post without the female tag would've slipped through, then they would stop it. I usually only call people out when they upload the minimum of 4 tags required. 9 times out of 10, they only add the artist, the character and the species, which usually implicate some other tags in.

Not everything with Breast or Vagina on them are going to be of female characters. There are hermaphrodite, cuntboys, and dickgirls too.

I also have those blacklisted as well, and if I see any of those, I'll most likely (politely) remind people about those too while fixing their mistake.

I don't even use blacklist. I'm used to it, so I don't complain.

Faux-Pa already saw this, obviously, but, for the record, the comments on this image:

Are how I try to let people know about these sorts of things.

A second example, not related to gender:

I think the best way to do this sort of thing is to try to make an effort to be friendly, and also provide links to particularly relevant information, and explanations for any misunderstandings.

Sometimes, I like to keep things to PMs. If someone is consistently forgetting tags, it is often, in my opinion, more polite to send a quiet PM than to call them out publicly, and people generally respond well to that. It doesn't feel like they are being put on the spot for a mistake.

I don't know. As I've said, I usually get a positive response to these sorts of things, so just trying to share my method, as best I can.

Lazy tagging and oversensitivity to sincere, helpful criticism are two of my biggest pet peeves on this site. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do. I'd imagine it could (possibly) help to keep things private, but I haven't dealt with this situation so I'm not entirely certain on how that'd turn out.

If you're not sure how to phrase it, then it might be a good idea to send them a dmail instead. People don't generally like it if their mistakes are pointed out in public, and many are more receptive to advice if it's given in private.

I thought things like this were supposed to be dealt with in private. More direct, less messy.

I'm curious, what happens to you when you see a vagina or breasts?

If the character is female, then I'll remind people about tagging genders. If the character is intersex/herm, then I'll remind them about the dickgirl/cuntboy tags until we can create a more PC tag for them.

I really don't see the point in PC tagging for this context. For whatever little one opinion's worth, I think gender is a semi-meaningless concept with no real functional purpose other than signaling in the real world, and in porn tagging here, the entire point of it is to indicate sex. People aren't searching dickgirl to respect and learn about someone's life experience as a male-bodied trans-woman. They're searching it to see a character with a feminine body with breasts and male genitals so they can smack off to it. I think we'd do well to ignore all the highfalutin concepts of ninety genders and tag solely on agreed meaningful combinations of well-defined basic body aspects. Considering gender instead of sex here, in my opinion, qualifies pretty well as twyk. Denying that would invalidate things like crossdressing, which would only really have the effect of making certain porn less discoverable. If we restrict the conversation of bodies to sex and leave gender to refer only to things that specifically refer to gender play, we'll have an easier time of it.

I fail to see how this rant contributes to the topic.

I should be reminded its exactly these kinds of conflicts and confusing bending of rules that lead to people not wanting to tag genders >> forum #166220 im wrong regardless which ever guide i follow so why bother with the trouble....

Didnt plan on responding here, but i think it worth while read to understand why some people dont bother. Follow twys il be punished, dont follow twys il be punished, dont do anything i get lectured on a contradictory system but nothing happens...

Where exactly have you been tagging that it's been wrong? Pokemon Dimorphism is the only example I can think of of people immediately getting it wrong, since everybody seems to think it's something to tag by.

I have yet to see someone punished for putting the initial gender tags in.

you only have to put 4 tags on an image when uploading it so i just try to make it only 4 and let other people tag the rest. If someone complains that it has something that is on their blacklist just tell them to tag it themselves

That's besides the point. If you want to upload something to this website, you could at least have the decency of including a gender tag and some other general tags.

well no where sence i dont generally tag for these species rules are bent for this coment was more about the perception people may have rather then first hand witnessing. unless you wanna count my own OC that kinda falls outside of whats commonly termed as dickgirl or herm but non the less tagged as such just because its a otherwise male body but has breasts and then we see admins bending the rules for certain fictional species(the link concerns consesions given to the Charr species to benefit a tiny fan base while disadvantaging anyone trying to follow twys) that are not commonplace in society and you wonder why some people with such contradictions dont tag genders.
