Topic: I've been a bit judgmental on this forum

Posted under General

I haven't had a good opinion of the furry fandom for the 12+ years I've been drawing furry... probably because nobody likes to hear good news, so all the "big" furry events are loaded with drama and vitriol.

I've recently sent an apology and an appeal to Fur Affinity hoping to return to the site. And since I used to hate Fur Affinity a lot more than I ever hated e621, I'd like to apologize to you guys too.

I won't name any names - a passive practice of mine 'cuz I don't want trolls to harass anyone whose toes I've stepped on - but I remember all of you and I'm very sorry.

Thanks for not banning me! Here's to a friendlier future!

FurAffinity is trash

It may be trash, but it's popular. More popular = more users, more users = more people to see your uploads, more people to see your uploads = more exposure as well as paying customers if you offer commissions.

FA is as trash as you make it. I just try to keep my head down and not dive into the drama, and I'm fortunate to mingle with some nice folks on there.

Yeah, but they're hot trash.
Some artist who go DNP here are only available on Furaffinity.

Don't worry, I have no intention of DNPing my work.

As someone who was banned for "lying about her disability" (I'm colorblind, and they thought I meant I didn't see color at all, so they took the fact that I could as proof I was lying.) and then permabanned for "identity fraud" when I told them I'm a guy, I can say with absolute certainty that it is always filled with drama, especially if you actively avoid it, and essentially if you have a disability.

I wonder, sometimes. Tagging is a fickle thing over there and some artists tag so little on their uploads it's like they don't want their art to be found. I pretty much only search for pokémon stuff and some don't even tag that.

Every artist I view on FA I've found here since I'd rather not spend my free time endlessly wading through stuff I don't want to see via FA's search (YCH Ads and the like take up like 20-30% of the searches on some pages).

Wow. Just... wow.

I can sort of confirm that FurAffinity's staff is, pretty not so cool most of the time.
A while ago, some artist got banned a week for uploading "child porn" (This case, a Kirby picture)
While the guy was banned, I simply contacted the staff about it and pointed out to their own rules stating that Kirby doesn't meet the definition of what child/young porn is, and they kept replying that the banned dude had to contact the staff.
PROBLEM IS : He is banned and due to being banned, he cannot contact the staff
I also asked them if then I was right about Kirby not being child porn and they completely avoided the question many times, simply replying how this guy has to contact the staff himself.

On the other hand on InkBunny, the two times I contacted the staff, I would actually get helpful replies from the administration. This, with the fact that FA's members base upload YCH reminders/COMMISSIONS ARE OPEN/STREAM ON/items for sale all the freaking time, made me lose interest and moved on InkBunny instead

How the fuck is lying about a disability a valid reason to ban someone from an art site?

Many admins there have already been declared horrible people (Not sure which, and I really don't care enough to look), this does not really surprise me.

Issues with FA:

  • FA's ticket system is hideously understaffed, and can take months for tickets to receive a response.
  • FA hired Zidonuke, who was responsible for abusing administrator on F-list by spying on users and releasing the site's source code, and kept it a secret to prevent any controversy.
  • FA's security was awful, and probably still is. Passwords were hashed with the same salt every time, and only hashed with SHA1.
  • HTTPS is opt-in, rather than enabled by default. Your authentication cookies and notes are sent in plaintext can be easily intercepted if using a public or shared network. Have fun browsing FA at a convention.
