Topic: [Discussion] Do you organize your photos,and if so, in what fashion?

Posted under Off Topic

I don't really care what your kinks are, or what tickles your pickle. I just have a shit-ton of pictures that are all just sitting in a folder on my file server that need to be organized. Trust me, I don't need to create an imageboard like I had that one time... *shivers in disgust*

So, the question is, do you organize your photos,and if so, in what fashion?

Download from original source, sort by source, then artist / poster.

There are probably better alternatives, but I ended up using Adobe Lightroom. Because all of the freeware image organizers that I tried lacked some features that I needed.

I've rated my whole collection and tagged everything with broad categories (clean, m/m, m/f, solo, etc). Makes it easy to find what I'm looking for.

I created folders for them
SFW:
->Furry
.-> MLP

NSFW:
-> Furry
-> MLP
.->Pics/Animation/Comics
..-> [Insert category here] (Like: Visible act,Artist, Character, etc.)

Also one folder for the most favourites.
If one pic fits in more then one category, I copy it into the several folders.

____________

And all of them are sorted by savedate

Any free organizers you'd recommend? I tried tagging and rating with picasa before. I had one problem were I couldn't clear out x-rated tags like after_sex from history. First thing suggested when I type 'a'.

pics and gifs: by artist, moreso from there if the artist has a ton of pics. dreiker, aogami, darknekogami to name a few. i like those guys but MAN is that a LOT of stuff to sort. (287 pics to dreiker alone though i haven't checked his tag here in a while so...that's probably gonna change at some point.)

i don't save too many videos so those usually get sorted by wherever i downloaded them from.

SWF files get specific sorting from the start cause SWF files don't have individual thumbnails. (either you sort those carefully or you play a guessing game when you want to find a specific SWF file. -_-)

oh and if it's a doujin or something then artist > doujin title

Nope. I just rarely put them in other folders if the fetish on them is bit extreme.

If you want to just use folders you may have to take personal preference into account. Not sure if you'll personally want to sort like me and D4rk. I mostly sort by body type but you might sort by subject matter. This is a huge directory structure. I've run into the
windows 260 character limit for paths when I had this on a windows boot partition. From the top, the levels vaguely corresponds to content rating > fandom > media > body type/age.

SFW

>>>>saber-tooth
>>>>spots
>>>>stripes
>>>scale
>>>vulpini
>>animated

>>comic
>>kemono (this would divide everything in FUR to be either western or kemono but haven't done it yet)
>>miscellaneous
>>>funny
>>>reactions
>>series
>>>StarFox
>>subject

For personal images, I'd organize by type: inspirational quotes, clothing with text on (you don't want to know how many of those I saved), cute animals, misc. artist images...

For uploading or other, actual uses, I'd use my PC and would save via alphanumeric "named" images that'd include the artist's time stamp. So an example is: A of 2016 would be earlier than A of 2017, and B of 2016 is immediately after A of 2016. I try to describe the image in the title and include the artist's name, except when uploading comics, where I'd use "*title* by *artist name* *pg#* *date*" format. I'd have folders for specific genres of images, and an individual folder for each and every comic.

Photos is a pretty weird word to use here BTW, since I guess you are mainly talking about furry (ie. mostly non-photographic) stuff

Anyway, in my case, same organization system applies to everything, images and otherwise.

  • TMSU to tag and search. (FSearch in the case of just want to search by filename). (plus a gui which I've posted a gif of a few times before)
  • If tags can be imported from elsewhere automatically, then do so (eg. e621), and don't worry about 'what directory is it in'. Just a directory that is neither insanely specific nor completely fails to describe the contents.
  • if not, and I might want to search it by tag, tag with the most salient features.
  • If it isn't something that has a fixed location, organize it like this $PROJECTTYPE/$YEAR/$PROJECT' (for example I do this with my art) ** use autonumbering renamers (Thunar -B) where needed for series. * Also use TMSU to do admin bookkeeping (eg. mark temporarily needed files/directories that should be removed later)
