Topic: Should users be allowed to add TWYK "tags" in descriptions...

Posted under General

*cutting off to avoid long title*

... so said "tags" are findable via description:*tag*

For reference's sake, I am against modifying the tag system we actually have, nor do I believe creating any such catagory near or within the tag section would be of actual benefit.

I, instead, believe that circumventing the modification of our tag system via adding potential tags that are known, and thus not to be tagged on-site, would be better put in something like a \

box labeled TWYK tags, and added along with is "to find these TWYK tags, use the meta tag prefix description: before typing in what you want to find.

TL;DR: instead of people constantly changing the tags we use to find images, how about we make section boxes in description purposely for TWYK, and detail how people can find these faux tags by description:

This way, people dedicated to TWYK might leave the normal tagging system alone, instead just altering the description to adhere to a similar yet less "destructive" (lack of better term) method for tagging what you know. And, for benefit's sake, use \* on each tag so you can click them as if you typed to search them.

There can be similar systems, like an actual box below descriptions, when uploading or editing a post, dedicated to TWYK that stays under the image. It'd still be collapsible for people who don't want seventy billion tags taking up space.

I mean, possibly abuse able and hard to police but I definitely am all for this.

I mean, technically this is already explicitly allowed by the fact that we allow any and all information into the description field unless it's derogatory. If someone wants to create mock tags inside the description or Twitter hashtags then they are free to do so.

This would be a good place for normally impractical tags like male_fox female_dragon etc.

Maybe description tags should get a single wiki page that lists a bunch of common useful ones? So there's some basic syntax or guidelines to follow.

Also possibly a tags_in_description tag just to keep track of them easier.

Definitely no tags_in_description tag, that would set a terrible precedent I'm not willing to deal with.

The wiki page however sounds like a good idea.

If, in the future a permanent site feature is added to handle desc tags(i.e, they get their own special box when editing/uploading), this tag would just be used to identify which posts have data that needs to be copied over (this is assuming copying them can't be scripted reliably).

I'm not sure what problems it would cause in the meantime. Just clarifying that it would only be a temporary fix until later. Or there might be a better way to accomplish this that I'm not aware of.

I normally only include simple little things, like "Artist's intention is male crossdressing," or male/male when it's not immediately obvious one of the characters is male.

The problem is that every time we give the users a hand to help them they try to take the entire arm. So this would almost certainly end up in them trying to establish more TWYK tags inside the normal tagging list.
Also, we still have planned to adequate support for TWYK tags, but this will take a lot of time and many other problems to fix before we can actually tackle this.

e621 runs on very old and abused software, and Kira can only fix so much every week.
