Topic: What is it with video game ghosts and their need to lick people?

Posted under Off Topic

Talking about ghosts as portrayed in various media, mind you. We see it especially in Nintendo games and media. Emphasis is placed on the tongue, whether we're talking about Gastly, Haunter, Gengar. The Boos from the Mario games don't lick people, but their tongues are sometimes notably exaggerated. Last year's Google doodle had a flash game with ghosts that attacked the player character (a cat named Momo) by licking her.

Even the Ghini from The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap would attack Link with their tongues. It's one of the stranger aspects I've noticed in Japanese and Japanese-stylized media. Keep in mind, I'm not complaining. It can be hot at times. But it's just a weird thing to associate with ghosts of all things.

Does anybody know if there's a reason for it beyond potential eroticism from the creators? A lot of emphasis is placed on the tongues of ghostly characters and I just think it's intriguing.

The Boos from Mario are made to be more silly than spooky, and what's sillier than a bunch of crazy faces, including waving your tongue at people while going "Bleeeeehhhh"?

As for licking, while not spooky, it is pretty creepy. That can boost the spook factor of things that are already scary.

Well, a strange creature going up to you and licking you would be pretty terrifying if you think about it. Some strange thing with no sense of personal space, or a sense of personal space it is voluntarily violating, taking an interest in you? That's kind of scary.

Perhaps it can be traced to when people die their tongues become bloated and protrude from the mouth. For example the depiction of kali, she is often shown with her tongue out as she is supposed to look like a corpse.

Those are mostly Japanese, and probably based on some mythological thing.
Maybe Akaname, which was a popular youkai that liked to lick filth off bathtubs and bathrooms. And occasionally off the people.

The obvious moral taught to the children was that you should stay clean, so you don't get licked by a monster when you go visit the bathroom at night.

I tried to Google the answer, "why do video game ghosts lick things", and for some reason, the first two results were in the order of Goat Simulator and this thread. I'm not even joking about that.

The rest of the results on the first page didn't answer the question, though.
