Topic: AMERICA! FUCK YEAH!

Posted under Off Topic

The Government explains that the DoJ’s letter begins with “a bedrock principle of criminal law, one that applies equally to both organizations and natural persons,” citing the following passage:

“When a person located abroad violates the laws of the United States, that person may be held criminally liable despite the fact that the person has never set foot in the United States.”

In other words, every person and company in the world should comply with U.S. law.

O if ever there was a time that I felt proud to be an American, it's not now.

How is this supposed to work with all your crazy state laws? Is the usable law chosen by rolling dice?

Hmm... well think of it this way...
Maybe if you followed our laws you wouldn't be so backassward.
America can't be wrong.
Its in the Constitution under Article 3 Section 5

"...and the receiving party shall be told to go fuck themselves, as we do as we please."

All jokes aside, this really is the most logical thing done by the government in the last couple months.
I mean, it is only natural for some power hungry asshats to expand the laws they need beyond their borders.

This has already been the case for American Citizens, I guess they're just wanting to expand it beyond that.

Good news is, as long as you stay out of our jurisdiction you can't be arrested for it.

But Batman has no jurisdiction.

Not exactly. In fact, when it comes to politics or interests, we are more divided than ever

Well there's a false choice - agree with everything the government does or refuse to have anything to do with it.

I currently enjoy or have enjoyed:

  • Public roads
  • Police
  • Firemen
  • Ambulances
  • Public schools
  • Subsidized electricity
  • Subsidized loans for post-secondary education

To enjoy these, I must pay taxes. It is my duty, it is the law, and it is the right and proper thing to do if I wish to continue to enjoy these things.

I didn't vote for Obama. I voted for Gary Johnson. In fact, I didn't vote for a single representative I have at the federal level of government. So hooray for me, I did my civic duty and things aren't going the way I'd prefer.

I cringe when I read about further examples of my government flexing its diplomatic muscles to enforce our laws in other countries. Mega Upload is hardly the first, hardly the worst, and isn't even the most recent example (though it's pretty bad, especially because of how much international bullying has occurred to gather evidence).

But, for whatever it's worth, at least we don't have lese majeste laws.

So, if someone commits a heinous crime outside of the U.S., are we obligated to regard them with a "clean slate" if they try to immigrate here or seek refuge in a related embassy? Silly example aside, I think there's a lot of context missing here in regards to the overall scope of the statement.

More importantly, the quote seems to be more about instantiating a "potential" rather than presenting a deliberate law ("-that person MAY be held criminally liable-" rather than "-that person WILL be held criminally liable-"). With that said, I think it's important to remember that in the U.S. legal system there is a distinction between "acknowledgement" of a person's guilt in committing a crime and the actual sentencing or justice in response to that guilt. As such, I believe that this statement is more about having the justifiable capacity to "acknowledge" an offense rather than trying to say "oh my garsh, that person just broke an Amurican law, let's get 'em!".

In any case, I don't believe that this is a way of saying that everyone should comply with U.S. laws, but rather our way of saying that we are not "obligated" to regard an entity as innocent if they commit a criminal offense while abroad. We ultimately wouldn't try to convict or enact justice on an offending entity for committing a foreign crime relative to our legal system, but we would be entirely justified in acknowledging said entity of the crime and potentially denying peaceful or lawful interaction with our society and perhaps even asking that they answer for said crimes before any such recognition could occur.

On the other hand, its fun to think Amurrrica is some sort of misguided creature trying to accumulate all of the jurisdictions. Yeah, gotta catch 'em all.

To be fair, everything in the world has done something awkward and "questionably" insane.

Did you know that the Christian deity openly admitted to being "jealous" of other deities you could probably worship? In that wording, no less.

My world view; shattered.

While I fully agree with the pure acknowledgement of a crime, it shouldn't be allowed to prosecute foreign entities who have never entered the country and seize their company in another country.

The megaupload servers and headquarters are located in hongkong, yet the FBI seized the files. This is the internet equivalent of sending a squad team into another country, raiding a company, arresting some suspects and then leaving without ever telling the other government.

Wait a second... It's the same government which tortures people in concentration camps in other countries, including mine? Maybe they should start with sending themselves to prison.

Not in that wording. The wording was more like this:
לֹא-תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה לָהֶם, וְלֹא תָעָבְדֵם: כִּי אָנֹכִי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ, אֵל קַנָּא--פֹּקֵד עֲו‍ֹן אָבֹת עַל-בָּנִים עַל-שִׁלֵּשִׁים וְעַל-רִבֵּעִים, לְשֹׂנְאָי.
