Topic: De-alias unguligrade

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The tag existed for some time, then got aliased to mammal as a synonym to ungulate and then apparently forgotten about.

Unguligrade means "walking on hooves". It's in line with plantigrade and digitigrade.

Hoofed anthros, or anthros based on hoofed animals, are not always unguligrade. Legs or feet may be off screen, some get plantigrade human feet, some artists manage to pull off digitigrade ungulates with some sort of toes. When depicted, unguligrade leg structure is kinda memorable (it looks a bit weird on anthros) so it's something that may be searched for and thus deserves tagging.

I wouldn't expect it to be tagged a lot, but hey some of us do tag this stuff.

Wouldn't that just be tagging hooves with more letters?

Isn't the point of OP that unguligrade does imply hooves, but the converse is not true (ie. hooves should be taggable separately from unguligrade, because hooves don't have to be on unguligrade legs)?

So no, not as far as I can see.

At the very least, it should be aliased to hooves not mammal.

Except it's more like "hooves -mlp" because mlp is its own thing. And mlp is often tagged hooves with no actual hooves visible.

And then there's stuff like this:

post #1614673 post #1304900 post #1319662 post #1324110
post #1491342 post #1524056 post #1284191 post #1220869

(the last two, I wouldn't tag it but those are digitigrade feet with hooves)

I agree those are mostly exceptions and maybe deserve their own tags, like assume ungulate anthros are unguligrade by default and tag when they aren't. But even then, unguligrade may be useful for images when it's clearly emphasized and skipped for like borderline cases.

Isn't it being used as the family term, in the same fashion as canine/feline/marsupial?

According to wiktionary... Unguligrade is from claw/hoof+walk, and is used in zoology to describe an animal that walk on hooves.
encyclopedia dot com says "describing the gait of ungulates in which only the tips of the hooves are on the ground and the rest of the foot is not (see also, plantigrate, digitigrade)
Wikipedia's wiki/unguligrade link redirects to wiki/ungulate, which refers to the group of ungulate mammals... which includes things like camels, Llamas, and hippos.

That's rather sticky.

forum #148140 describes some of the thought process involved with some of the existing aliases... (yes, I know you linked this in the OP, but still)

If it were up to me, I'd probably undo all of the aliases and makes all of the hoofy species imply ungulate --kind of like 'canine' or avian' ... It doesn't matter if a an avian has wings, it's still an avian. It doesn't matter if an unguliwhatever has hooves, it's still a hoofy.. then tag hooves and toe_hooves nad plantigrave hooves and whatever independently.. but.. *shrug*
