Topic: Future of Flash on e621

Posted under General

We will continue hosting the flash files, but depending on how browsers will handle them we might have to change how they're displayed.
In any case standalone players will definitely continue to be a thing so anyone can just grab the file and play it locally on their computer.

I understand that, but a lot of the websites are already changing to HTML5 now

If your real question is about HTML5, I recommend just skipping to that.

KiraNoot (one of the admins here with access to e621's code) has commented on the proposition of HTML5 support. I believe you could summarize it roughly like this: HTML5 has similar runtime functionality to Flash, but the way resources are organized doesn't really work for e621; a format that was like a zip of a HTML5 document with all the resources it uses, would fit much better into e621.

Flash is still supported by a few mobile browsers too, Puffin immediately comes to mind. No shortage of offline players either like SWIFF.

step one: adobe creates a defacto monopoly on audio / video content through the use of proprietary software.

step two: proprietary software is no longer supported once it stops being profitable and alternatives become mainstream.

step three: sites relying on proprietary software scramble to rebuild their monocultured infrastructure as gigabytes of proprietary content crumbles under their feet, to be lost forever lest Gnash gets off the ground.

frankly, i've no sympathy for whoever was still hosting Flash past 2010.

What NotMeNotYou essentially already stated. It would be insane to get rid of all the flash content here already as that was the mainstream format for almost everything non-static on the internet for years. I can imagine them turning into download only files at some point and uploading new flash files getting disabled.

At least we do already have WebM support so non-interactive animations are more than good, but I'm actually more conserned of other sites. There's really low amount of furry sites which support anything other than flash and gif - and even with video services like twitter essentially gives the videos a jpg treatment.

"Supported"
What they do is they take the flash, play it on their own server and then stream it as HTML5 video to user. Relying on services like this doesn't sound too good in long run.
As for standalone players, adobe themselves are already serving Flash Projector.

what about HTML5, provided more furry sites try to support HTML5, would you ever consider adding support for that?

Use the forum search and look for previous threads about this. It's a security risk at best.

oh, well that kind of sucks. Is there any other file format that you guys would ever consider after Flash becomes deprecated?

Also answered in the same threads. :V

We'd consider using something that's can be sand boxed like html5 and distributed as a single file archive. So far there are no suitable successors, but maybe that will change until 2020.

sucks that html5 is such a security risk/pain
is there no way to 'borrow' the setup/code from another website that has successfully integrated html5, like kongregrate, newgrounds and itch.io? i feel like there must be something on the net that allows one to succesfully integrate html5 with minimal risk and difficulty.
