Implicating Lycan → Were
Link to implication

Reason:

Commonly mistaken as a werewolf, the Lycan is a more advanced species that, unlike the werewolf, can for the most part control their transformations. A werewolf can only change under the full moon, and cannot control that. The same can be said for lycans, however they are also able to transform at any given time, whether under a full moon or not, should the need arise.

Can also refer to a species that didn't start out as a humanoid (human, elf, etc.), and do not "change" instead retain their werewolf-like form throughout their lives.

Sometimes said to have been the original host of Lycanthropy, and are able to spread it by biting victims. [citation needed]

Small ("literal") dictionary:

  • Lycanthropy: "wolf man (looking)"
  • Werewolf: "man-wolf"
  • Theriantropy: "beast man (looking)"
  • Theriocephaly: "beast headed"
  • Cynocephaly: "dog headed"

From that it would be (bold relations exist already):

However I don't know how these are really used in these days, with werewolves in fictional media and whatnot. But originally I don't think there was much distinction between lycantrophe (literary context) and werewolf (folklore context).

This seems like it has less to do with tagging and more to do with backstory to a popular game or something. Is there actually any visual difference here from the average werewolf? If not I think an alias would be more appropriate.

i know in mythology (ty castlevania franchise for using mythology as a source for a great number of your monsters. :)) theres more than just werewolves (aka lycanthropes/lycan/etc.). things such as werecat's, werepanther's, weretiger...leopard...if the word were doesn't work then is there some other general term for all these types of creatures (should any of these others come up as well)?

"Is there actually any visual difference here from the average werewolf?"

like with many mythical things, it probably would depend on the region/source/etc. your checking out as to what they'd look like.

here is a section of a castlevania fan site that has abit of mythology info on the various creatures shown throughout the franchise complete with reference links (can't say whether or not any of the links are dead or not :/). granted some are references to characters from other games, movies or objects/creatures seen irl too but overall it's got some interesting info there. also note the demon and dragon sub-sections there.

I have to appeal for that alias to be removed. Implicating tags based on lore (from where?) is questionable at best, and this one actually creates a gap in the tag chain.

lycan -> were
lycanthrope -> werewolf -> (were & canine & werewolf)

Lycan can't imply werewolf or lycanthrope (aliased tags can't imply anything), so those need to be tagged manually, which somewhat defeat the purpose of having all those aliases setup. Even if the alias was justified in the lore of a certain franchise (Scakk's tagging history tells me maybe Oversoul? The wiki page and OP are from the same day.), this would be better suited to a franchise specific tag, like lycan_(oversoul). Right now, it's just breaking tag cohesion.
