Topic: Which tag should be used? Lynel or Lynel_(botw) ?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I saw the discrepancy between the tags from characters who are in botw having _(botw) at the end of their tags here and Lynel being a character in the game, I was curious of which should be used.

And should they be a character or a species tag? Considering there are multiple enemies who are lynels (apparently)?

Haven't played BOTW yet (but if someone wants to buy me an early christmas present...) ...Lynel appears to be a species in the Zelda species. If there are any named Lynel out there, then they do not appear on either of the wikis I checked, so I feel fairly confident in saying that Lynel SHOULD be a species, not a character.

That said, Lynel is ALSO a name that humans give their human children. It's a variant of 'Lionel'... so, seems like a furry kinda name. So, I feel like the botw clarification is helpful.

Lynel_(botw) should not be used; they are not exclusive to the game, ergo having a BOTW suffix just... doesn't make sense

if anything, to make it more recognizable it should be Lynel_(zelda), and it is DEFINITELY a species, not a character

That's very fair!

They do seem to have a lot of design variety over the years, (as seen here: https://www.zeldadungeon.net/wiki/Lynel -- hop down to 'Gallery' ) but I don't think there's enough variety to really justify it, especially as we don't SEEM to have any pre-BOTW lynel art.

So, I support species:lynel_(zelda)

:D

The changes can be chalked up to bit limitation. It was only in Breath of the Wild that they had a high enough quality to show details, whereas other monsters, such as Moblins and Lizalfos have had a lot of quality appearances. We can always change it later, but for now it should just be the basic tag.

Search: lynel -lynel_(botw) -breath_of_the_wild - 3 images, all recognizably the same species as everything else tagged lynel or lynel_(botw) (though I'll admit one may be questionable, but only due to the extreme inflation fetish going on in that one).

I vote we alias lynel_(botw) to species:lynel, implicate lynel -> the_legend_of_zelda, and I rather strongly suspect that all existing lynel images which do not currently have the breath_of_the_wild should be tagged us such. I don't think it's necessarily appropriate to implicate lynel -> breath_of_the_wild, just observing that all the current lynels here seem to be recognizably of the sort from breath_of_the_wild, as opposed to early-generation concept art of lynels.

There is no such thing as species:lynel, that's just the lynel tag.

I can't recall whether there's a way to change the type of a tag. I mean, as a general tag I suppose it's good enough, but lynel really does refer to a species (a fictional species is still a species, see also renamon) and should be a species tag.

adding species: in front of tag while tagging it to something changes it's tag type to species tag

what furrin meant is that you cannot have general:lynel and species:lynel at the same time. you cannot have multiple versions of same tag, lynel is either a general tag or species tag, not both.

Mostly, when I said species:lynel, I was just communicating that I think it should be a species tag, not anything weird. (Once upon a time, users could, I believe, chance what type of tag a tag was by prefacing it with 'species:'... didn't realize that had changed :) )

Anyway, with the lack of non-botw lyonel's out there, I agree that that would be a bit redundant... :)

Users can do so, as long as there's less than a hundred of them. I was saying that species: isn't a part of the tag. The way @ikdind said to alias to species:lynel instead of just straight up lynel made is sound like he thought that was part of the tag.

I've forgotten a fair amount about the specifics of tagging since I went into lerk mode several years ago, but when I said species:lynel I meant to imply that lynel should be changed to a species tag.

But in the end, it sounds like we're in good agreement, just confusing each other in our conventions for describing tags.

Edit: Looks like I was able to change the lynel tag to a species type. Also went ahead and submitted the alias for approval. There's already an implication for lynel -> the_legend_of_zelda.
