Topic: Drink Responsibly

Posted under Off Topic

Double-checked the rules to make sure this was alright to post. We all good, but just don't encourage excessive drinking.

Hey y'all, it's your Husk. I'm turning 21 on the 20th and my cousins and older sis are gonna "kidnap" me and my twin sis to go clubbing and try out our first legal drink. We talked about it and I think I might enjoy just a simple rum & Coca-Cola and definitely avoid the Adios and Hennessey. What's y'all's favorite drink to enjoy responsibly?

Whiskey and coke or Malibu and pineapple juice, either split 1:1. Midori sours are also pretty nice, as are mojitos-- and you can make them with all kinds of stuff, like strawberries. If it's your first drink I'd maybe look more towards lower ABV drinks so you can get a feel for what you can handle. Going too hard too fast isn't fun.

Orange juice.

Underage and admin?! *thinking*

Alcoholic Piña colada is pretty neat. It's coconut milk and pine apple with a shot of rum. I would also recommend anything that's fruity as fuck. Those cocktails are usually the tastiest.

Sugar increases absorption of alcohol into the blood.
Alcohol has delayed effect, the glass of x you drink now only starts having effect like half an hour later.
Make sure you eat your dinner before you go out drinking.

What DelurC said, and I also suggest not drinking any water (or anything, really) if you get sick from drinking. Anything you ingest after that will only come straight up violently.

Make sure to have painkillers, light food, and clear water the day afterwards, and don't have anything you know will make you sick after (or during) drinking. Hangovers and poisoning isn't going to go away that fast, so you're going to be resting for a bit.

And, finally, if you can drink with a bartender or friend who knows BLS (Basic Life Support) it'll help greatly; if you vomit profusely, gag on any food or object in your throat, or pass out, they can take appropriate actions. I will not stress how important it was that I took a class, my aunt and my brother individually got drunk to the point of sickness and needed a third party intervention, and it was not fun for anyone else around.

Other than that, happy early 21st birthday!

Underage is under 18. he hasn't been underage in several years.

Can't speak for drink you'd get in a club. I, when I turned 21 had a grasshopper--delightful minty ice cream sort of thing. I like mint :D Also things like strawberry daiquiris. But, most often, just a few sips of a frozen margarita. :)

I don't drink too much-- My husband and I both agree that keeping anything more than a few bottles of Smirnoff around the house isn't a good idea.

Actually not all that certain what drunk feels like-- the one time people made effort to get me there, I didn't notice too much. Except the hangover the next day. Or maybe that was ex-roommate trying to poison me... she was the one who decided we needed to rearrange the livingroom that day...

Also, stay hydrated :) and always keep an eye on your drink. :)

You Americans are funny. Don't try to gulp a whole bottle single-handedly and you'll be fine.

What's y'all's favorite drink to enjoy responsibly?

Beer? That's not what you're going for anyway.

Updated by anonymous

I HATE the taste of alcohol, it overwhelms my mouth, so if I do get any drinks on rare occasion I get the frutiest, sweetest drinks. The sweetness pretty much covers the entirety of the alcohol taste.

Updated by anonymous

Cider, most alcohol makes me throw up immediately and for some reason I can drink cider just fine, although I've never tried a really fruity cocktail.

On the contrary water is good, as the alcohol is the polar opposite of it.

Vomiting is also good, it's a defense mechanism.

Root beer. If I drink alcohol, my medication will kill me.

Updated by anonymous

For some clarification drinking water will help counter a potential hangover. Hangover aren't fun.

It is good to try and avoid throwing up, but your body DOES throw up for a reason. :)

Purposely inducing vomiting is not good for you. Drinking water will induce vomiting if you are sick from alcohol, even if it is the "polar opposite", and you will not stop vomiting until the water is gone.

The acid in your stomach will damage your throat if you don't stop it, and the sphincter will weaken if you self induce vomiting. When that happens for too long, you will lose your gag reflex and risk choking on your own vomit, especially if you try to breathe in directly after vomiting. And unless you can get a full blown doctor to extract the vomit, vomitus in your lungs will damage said lungs until removed. There can also be permanent damage depending on how much stomach acid you evacuate.

I don't think this advice is all that applicable; it doesn't sound like he's trying to get blackout drunk or die of alcohol poisoning on his first drinking day.

Water is important during drinking to decrease the concentration of the alcohol inside the stomach and to ensure it doesn't diffuse into the blood too quickly, which ensures that your liver has enough time to process it without creating the hangover poisoning in the first place. This is also why it's recommended to have food first: More contents inside the stomach to slow down alcohol absorption rate and less desire to actually drink alcohol to quench the stomach.

Beyond that everyone should have either first aid or BLS training, it's just smart to have in general.

Stomach acid is the most dangerous to your body when it's undiluted, drinking water makes the concentration go down and reduce the damage it does while going out the unintended way. But drinking in moderation and ensuring you don't consume a ton of alcohol on an empty stomach will prevent vomiting in the first place, so this entire spiel is a moot point.

TL;DR: Drink responsibly, don't go past your limits, only drink on a full stomach and stay hydrated before, during, and after drinking, and you'll have a pleasant experience devoid of vomiting up anything.

There are actually very sweet beers, but those also smell sweet. If something smells interesting have a sip and see if you like it. The amount of beer available is staggering, even in the US. Do stay away from cheap beer, though. That stuff is dubbed "horse piss" for very good reasons: They value alcohol content over taste and are only good for getting drunk quickly and cheaply. You usually fare better with something locally brewed, slightly more expensive but at least it'll have a taste other than warm piss.

I'm parroting what has been taught to me. "Water induces vomiting; vomiting with food can cause you to choke; past choking, vomiting diminishes your gag reflex, making you more susceptible to 'breathing' in solids and liquids, causing them to enter your lungs; solids and liquids in your lungs causes damage to your lungs no matter where they came from, excluding medicinal liquids injected (which BLS and EMTs can't inject); and, finally, self induced vomiting or the swallowing/expulsion of air causes worse damage than accidental vomiting or the expulsion of air naturally (casual burping)."

And I've had experienced drinkers get black out drunk, I'm warning a person who doesn't know their limits what to avoid so they don't suffer what takes out even the healthiest people. Alcohol is not a joke, it can be deadly when people don't know what they're doing. The usual course of action is to let it (alcohol poisoning or a hangover) pass by without forced intervention, any intervention that is not done appropriately will cause more harm than good, and most people don't even know how to appropriately drink water (even when not drunk).

I'd suggest avoiding hard liquor until you know how much soft liquor it takes to get you drunk, but your first time drinking shouldn't knock you down unless you're unsupervised. But friends can also be dumbasses, suggesting more liquor or large, tough foods, hence my advice.

Water doesn't induce vomiting, where the did you learn that? The rest is basically just fear mongering about the worst case scenario that can happen. This is basically like placing a warning sign from a beach known for freak currents inside a shower stall. It is possible, that's true, but chances of drowning in a shower stall are much smaller than drowning in an ocean.

Besides all that "self induced vomiting [...] causes worse damage than [...] casual burping", are you sure you remember this warning right? That entire thing seems impractical and more like teaching abstinence as a valid form of birth control. Your advice of "no water during drinking" has a higher risk of leading to alcohol poisoning than keeping hydrated does to needing to vomit.

No experienced drinker gets blackout drunk on accident unless they caved to peer pressure, ignored instructions on their medication, or drastically underestimated the alcohol contents of their drinks. This simply doesn't happen on accident. Getting blackout drunk takes work, you don't just accidentally down 10 shots of whiskey in half an hour, or similar.
And yes, I speak as someone who lives in a place where dying of alcohol poisoning at 14 is nothing new, who has had helped his drunk friends home at 15, and has been around drunks since forever.

However, this brings up a very important point: A lot of medications out there get affected by alcohol, and usually quite negatively. If you (@TheHuskyK9) has any medication double check that you can actually use it while under the influence, or if there is anything else that you need to be aware of. Some medication drastically lowers the point at which alcohol poisoning will occur, and that can get deadly very quickly.

Siral_Exan said:

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Peer pressure is the silent killer in most alcohol related deaths for young people (at least in Germany). If your friends push you to drink they are not your friends. Go home (call yourself an uber or cab if needed) if your friends push you to drink more than you're comfortable with.
I can not stress this enough.

At this point, my arguments can only boil down to statistics vs results, all from third party sources, except I can say "yes, people don't even know how to drink water", but I'm chalking that up to personal experience.

So many people that I've witnessed, family and strangers alike, have choked on water that it isn't funny. I can only speculate that they took too big of a gulp; my family has so many straws that they partially fills a drawer (with cup lids being the other factor), even in my extended family. But, again, it's probably just my bad experiences that they have to choke on it before they get it right the second time around.

Also, coffee will not make you less drunk. It will just make you a very awake drunk person.

Fully agree on the medication thing. If your medication is a depressant, one drink is like 10. If you take medicine that gets filtered through the liver, do! not! drink!

Mixing alcohol types is only unadviced because people can't math properly to figure out what the total alcohol volume after mixing is, sugar does not increase absorption rates of alcohol (carbonation does, however), sugarless carbonated beverages appear to increase alcohol absorption rate (Source ). The "hydration philosophy" is also sadly old wives takes in its usefulness, but the recipes are tried and true combinations and taste quite well.

Being mainly a beer drinker (from Germany, who would have thought ^^), I'm not really into cocktails, but I can highly recommend Jäger Bull and Captain Coke - hazelnut shots are also awesome.
About the water discussion, I didn't have any bad experience with drinking water while being intoxicated yet, and I'm sorry for anyone having, although I can't think of any reasons why this would happen. So I have to agree with the side that recommends to drink a lot of water, especially at the point before you go to bed, that helps a lot to counter your next days hangover. That, and eating enough (ideally fatty) food before you go for it, and you should be good.
And finally one future advice, don't drink too much if you're in a phase where you really don't feel mentally well for whatever reasons. There's a high chance you'll end up being a emotional wreck/doing silly shit to yourself and the people around you/willingly tell them stuff you'd normally keep secret, just to regret that last night happened... at least in my experience. Well, just hope you won't reach the point where you need that advice ^^

TBH I've only drank vodka and beer in my life, I never tried any fancy drinks or whiskey, only the true Slavic beverages, like I should. Once I drank 10 shots of vodka and I didn't even feel like I was drunk, maybe because my stomach was full before that. I also drink when there is an occasion, like my friend's birthday or a family meeting.

Try to do or drink something you couldn't at home. Bars aren't worth the premium if you're only going to have basic drinks while also doing nothing else. Make it an experience that the alcohol only helps along, in theory. Drink as a statement of intent to enjoy some activity or event more than you normally might. For me, trying out new drinks to find the good ones is almost the entire point, like looking for good furry porn artists... Shocker.

I recommend you find your limits in a controlled environment, eventually, so you can learn to properly pace yourself. I go from "buzzed" (i.e., a little loose-lipped and uninhibited) to "tipsy" (i.e., some uncoordinated movements, walking is harder than sitting...) to "tipsier" (i.e., stumbling to the washroom, well-slurred speech, acting a little different) to "drunk" (i.e., need to think and act slower to master myself) to "wasted" (i.e., want to sleep). For most people, getting to drunk should be a commitment, not an accident--you need to work at it. The more alcohol I drink, the less I want to keep drinking.

Since I don't want what I call "strong alcohol taste", I try to avoid bitter beers and hard liquors that only have bite. I've not yet had a beer branded as "pale ale" that I liked. Likewise, the beer branded as "unfiltered" I've had so far tasted like the uncaptured dust from a full vacuum cleaner bag. Great palate cleanser though. My best experiences have been with stout beers (dark, roasted, stronger) and other stronger European beers like Innis & Gunn Rum Finish[/i]. If Chicago's bars were representative of America's, and they probably were, then the servers are likely to skip a beat when asked for "a stout" before saying "the only dark beer we have is Guinness". Lol. I did happen into Dragon's Milk, though. On the hard liquor side, "no strong alcohol taste" leaves me with non-scotch whiskies and liqueurs. Smoothness is next to godliness, so rye whisky and nutty liqueurs[/i] are my go-to drinks, usually mixed with Pepsi[/i] although you "shouldn't" mix those liqueurs (fuck that). Again, ask for those after asking for stout to fluster your server haha. "We have Drambuie, Cointreau, and Jack Daniel's"... Liqueurs: hazelnut, butterscotch, chocolate. Rye: Seagram's, Canadian Club, Crown Royal, Gibson's, Forty Creek, (any).[/i] Nothing I just said was particularly adventurous, and all are relatively easy drinking.post #929177

How come Averna works in everything? Chocolate milkshake, 7up made black... I think I owe it to myself to try it with matcha green tea soon, because.

Thread: Turned 21. Had my first drink. Found by searching hazelnut. I'm too easy.

TL;DR recommendations bolded

As far as mixed drinks go, I fell in love with the whiskey sour immediately after trying one. Long Island Iced Tea is good, but I don't recommend starting off with them as they are VERY strong. A lot stronger than they taste. Avoid wine and anything that's extremely sugary like the plague, it'll get you hungover as fuck. Like people have been suggesting, keep a gallon of water in your hotel room.

In most cases, if you wake up hungover, you'll forget about it after a shit and a shower. Oh yeah, if this is your first time drinking, prepare to feel like you just went binge eating at Taco Bell the morning after

+ lol at 21 being the legal drinking age in America, it’s 18 here in Australia lmao

I will say that the positive about having to wait an extra 3 years is ridiculously inexpensive alcohol. A bottle is insanely cheap in the states

Sugar doesn't affect hangovers, the amount of alcohol and unrelated impurities inside do. If you buy cheap wine be prepared to only get what you paid for: Trash.
Expensive wine is an experience worth savoring, not something to just chug to get drunk.

You have cheap alcohol in almost every other country as well, with the only exceptions being states that tax it to hell and back like Finland does. The only caveat is that the cheap stuff generally tastes bad and is impure, thus you have a higher risk byproducts in the stuff give you hangovers.

Don't drink at all, that would be my recommendation to everyone.
I would rather smoke than drink, because at least it won't make me violent.

I remember that I had my first beer at 15, and I can still see the endless nights of headaches and vomiting in my memory. I haven't drank alcohol for at least 5 years now, and I'm pretty proud of that to be fair. Try to not get addicted to it, that would be the best. :)

But of course, if you don't drink too much, it will be alright. When I drink, I usually mix Cola with Three Sixty, it tastes alright.

Or you don't drink or smoke. That way you dont't hurt people around you through punches, and not through practically uncurable desieses either. Yay!

Well, I'm laughing.

The worst thing is 3 in the morning driving the porcelain bus after a "good night out" then waking up at 3 in the afternoon wondering if anyone you knew was witness to what little behaviour you actually remember.
Then the next week, month new year's eve, Christmas party, you do it all over again...
I don't do that now but I'd rather not have done in the first place, like make a habit out of it.
That's what mystifies me though, because usually, the animal kingdom has evolved to avoid anything that makes them ill. :/

I personally like jägermeister shots. I like all the assorted flavors of rums too.

Too late, I D R A N K

Had a good night. Got a Bacardi and coke, and my older sister bought me another one. Surprise twist, my twin sister was already drunk before we went to the club. She had a margarita, red wine, and some chardonnay at lunch. I didn't drink any more than that because I'm a responsible boi and I gotta set an example for all the bois

Last year, I was in London, and since it’s legal to drink below 21 there, I had rum and coke for my first drink, don’t use too much rum. (I know I’m late)

Stay away from the suspiciously cheap stuff. I remember a bottle of what is called White Lightning in the UK, I don't know if anyone is familiar with that stuff, it's referred to as "tramp juice.". It goes down swimmingly, so another one, and another, it is like a delayed effect then your stomach is spinning one way the room another. Being a bit merry can be fun, for a while, going from sober to not knowing what to do with yourself is another matter entirely!
So just stick to a couple of glasses of the same drink (don't mix them) and stick to it like glue.

Yeah. Now, I don't know about the rest of your experience...

...but I did try a $7 750ml bottle of 75 South Blended Whiskey just to see if the $15-35 price point of the regular brand names was in fact overpaying. Nope. Rocket fuel horse piss. Cruzan's Aged Rum is another experience I don't care to repeat for its very strong bite, and Luxardo Limoncello (lemon liqueur), I believe it was, was another disappointment.
