Topic: Blacklist: What It Is and Why Should You Use It

Posted under General

A blacklist is a list that you have which, by default, is blank. You can add tags to the blacklist, as many as you want. What this will end up doing is, as you search posts, it will automatically hide the images that contain that tag.

This may result in some pages appearing to have less images in it than other pages, or in the case of some popular tags, may hide a page entirely.

Do be careful when adding tags to the blacklist. If what you typed is misspelled, then it will not filter out the tags effectively.

Here are some link to additional information you can find about blacklists. Bear in mind that complaining that you do not want to see a particular type of image, and not editing your blacklist to filter it, is generally frowned upon.

Unfortunately most of the people who do the complaining aren't the sort to visit the forum, or even to read rules that are right in front of them.

The old thread contained language that is no longer appropriate for administrators, plus it was poorly phrased and delivered a message in a way that could have been greatly improved.

I think it's probably a good idea. It's a little more organised and professional now. When I first got on here, it was a bit like a maze trying to locate basic info like this. I mostly learned how to blacklist, how to modify searches, how aliases worked, how implications worked, etc by reading people's random comments about it on the forums. There's a few nooks and crannies with scattered info, but those are somewhat hard to refind later unless you've bookmarked them. So organising and streamlining some of the basics is probably a very good idea.

Which is strange considering the Wiki will link to all help pages on the very first page and all those little (help) links strewn across the page and near the related search and reply boxes.

But yeah, the use of the wiki as a means for self education needs to be more advertised in general.

But yeah, the use of the wiki as a means for self education needs to be more advertised in general.

The main wiki directory page that I think you're referring to has two different pages linked for blacklist info. Which is a little mazelike and unnecessarily confusing. It also is the only main link without a short mini description on that page.

When I was brand new here, the term "blacklist" meant nothing to me until after I had read people on the forums discussing what a blacklist was and why it would matter. Initially "blacklist" was up there with pools and blips as a "site feature I don't understand but eventually might figure out what it's for". It took seeing people talk about it on the forums to realise what I was missing, go back and find the wiki article and read the sticky. A thread like this might help close that gap between the available instructions and people realising what they're missing and should learn to use. Like you said, advertising the wiki as a resource. Giving things like blacklist a context.

There's also a lot of redundancy and conflicting info in all those little links strewn across the site. I think it's just the side effect of being written over time and then lost track of. For instance, there's a lot of overlap in topics (but different versions of the content) between what is linked on the wiki home page and what is linked over here in a broader site type directory . As an example, there are two different pages called FAQ located here and here and they don't contain the same information.

And even though I often use them, I still find it confusing why we have both this page https://e621.net/help/tags and this page https://e621.net/help/cheatsheet which are almost like two versions of each other. And some of that is also a rewording of what's on here https://e621.net/wiki/show?title=help%3Atags (which is linked from the wiki home page under "tagging guidelines".) Wouldn't it be more useful if some of that info was all gathered into the same page instead of re-worded on three separate pages?

Another unimportant but somewhat confusing discrepancy is that the tagging help/tagging checklist has some outdated tags which have since been aliased (like pubic_tuft was aliased to pubes, looking_at_each_other is now eye_contact, etc). It may seem unimportant, but when that list is often used by people new to the site to begin tagging, it is unnecessarily confusing to use the tag listed and then have it show up as a different tag once they save it and the alias kicks in. I've been tempted to go through and update those, but wasn't sure if normal members are supposed to edit such an important wiki or not. Would it be ok to do that, or is that a no-no?

It's little details like this that could use streamlining. Most of the information is written down somewhere, but the devil is in the details for how they all interconnect. Especially when you're new or looking specifically for something then you can get really turned around. I've bookmarked a few key pages that I wasn't sure how to relocate later. Ideally you shouldn't have to wonder how to find a key page again, it should be fairly straightforward where to look. So if some of these new changes are about streamlining all those little details, then I think that would be good.

I actual liked the old title/forum. It convey a point of "blacklist" block what you don't want to see and be happy or "die" if you don't blacklist and complain about stuff you don't want to see, you could get into trouble.

Now you can't even be somewhat creative with the titles. At least it wasn't named "Blacklist or go fuck yourself"

Yeah, the reason for this is that your computer still pulls all posts regardless of your blacklist, but your browser hides them from you through javascript. Although it has its issues, it has its benefits too, such as being able to see hidden posts by simply clicking the word "Blacklisted" on the left-hand side of the page any time your search results contain tags you've blacklisted.

It's also a benefit for the server because it's having to work less to give you your search results, because it's not having to process your blacklist (your computer does that). Imagine searching for "gay fox", and then the server also tacking on every individual line of your blacklist to your search as well (because the blacklist is processed per-line, not all at once). So the server would search for "gay fox", and would then have to search through those results for every line of your blacklist, so it can remove all the results that you don't want to see before sending them to your computer.

"User searched for 'gay fox', got it. Oh wait, this user also has a blacklist with 10 lines. Ok, well let's see.. 'these' posts have tags that match the first line of his blacklist, so I'll remove those.. 'these' posts have tags that match the 2nd line of his blacklist, so I'll remove those too.." and so on until it finally figures out which results to actually show you. Or we could just make your computer process all that PLUS give you the benefit of being able to quickly see the blacklisted images in your search results if you choose to. :P

I'm not saying that we wouldn't ever want to start having the blacklist process server-side at some point in the future. I'm not a developer for the site or in any other way, and my understanding of how the server would have to handle blacklist processing might not be completely accurate either, it's just the best idea of it I have. Our actual devs might have more insight.

Have you put the tags on each line? Because if they are all on 1 line, it'll only blacklist posts with all the tags, if one tag is missing from a pic on that line, you'll still see it, even if you don't want to...

I never knew what I'd find there.

I strongly dislike that limit seeing how most searches end in -my_little_pony and either order:score or order:favcount

It doesn't reduce the tag count at all, but here's a useful tip: Use -mlp instead of -my_little_pony to make your list of terms (at least physically) shorter. It is faster to type and slightly easier to navigate.

I'm still trying to get that tag narrowed down. When I got to it many images were tagged fart farting gas gassy smelly stinky mustard_gas and it was impossible to blacklist with any consistency. I'm still not sure what to do with gas/gassy because that can refer to multiple things, unfortunately. I kind of put that project aside for a while when I got stuck at those.

Oh, but mustard_gas seems to be a working name for hyperfarting at least. It's not very consistently tagged, but if anybody has any good ideas for names I'd be happy to go through fart to separate out "fart as a fetish/focus" images and try to set up a framework for it. Mustard_gas/hyperfart only really works when it is excessive, but it isn't always fetishized or necessarily the "focus" (even if it does take up most of the frame) and probably wouldn't fit well with what you are looking for. I'm sure that people are both looking for this sort of thing for themselves or would like to blacklist it.

  • fart
  • burping
    • hyperburp? - I don't think there's really a need for this one, but I'm not sure.

I know you can blacklist posts by the user/uploader like that, but is there any way to block posts by the tagged artist instead?

So that way not only will they be blocked no matter who uploaded them, but it also won't block other uploads not related to that artist that were uploaded by the same user.

Only add the artist tag to a new line.

That will blacklist any post with that artist tag.

In fact, I fixed your blacklist for you, you added artist: in front of it, that is not needed and can break the blacklist.

Is there any way to add exceptions to the blacklist?

By that I mean, to make something like... Well, for example, what I tried just recently: "My_Little_Pony -Princess_Celestia"

I had hoped it would blacklist MLP art that did not include Celestia. It didn't work.

If there is some way to achieve that effect, it would be really very nice. If it's not possible, I guess... Feature request then?
