Aliasing budgie → budgerigar
Link to alias

Reason:

Budgie is the informal term for budgerigar, or the shell parakeet.

Was going to eventually suggest this myself, and have manually fixed this often myself. +1

Though some might argue for a reverse alias, since budgie is the most common casual term for the same animal. Either way works for me imho.

On the other hand, "budgie" doesn't have any hits, while there are 31 for "budgerigar". While not conclusive, that suggests to me that the formal name would be a better alias, as suggested in the OP.

i have never heard the word budgerigar and at least in my school they taught us to call those animals as budgies. honestly i think that reversing would be better because at least for me the term budgie seems far more widely known.

Yeah i had cleaned the entire tag to fix things to the most common usage of the name so they'd be together; if I hadn't fixed it, there would have been quite a few posts with that tag.

I think I fixed around 20-30 posts? Around that number

Except you shouldn't do that... the alias will do that, and we want to know which is more common, by how much, and why. In an uninformed instance, those questions can help with a decision until information is given.

So please don't do that.

Ah ok... my apologies, didn't know that wasn't to be done. I assumed I was helping but it seems I was mistaken. My apologies.

Edit:
But yes at imagoober and everyone else: there were quite a few posts tagged as budgie before I stepped in, quite a good chunk of them

And the general commen usage from what I've seen has been budgie, I have never seen anyone use the full name outside of scientific/proper contexts; most people only know budgie and have never heard of their proper name.

has anyone mentioned the band?

I'm about 99% sure I've seen Budgie's album covers on here somewhere

Bumping, because I feel this is still an important alias to make since budgie is the more well known name of the species. So either an alias or a reverse alias.

Interestingly, only one of their uploaded albums, post #506557 doesn't contain a budgie/sufficiently budgie-like creature.

even then, budgie_(band) suffices as a fine tag for the band separate from the species tag

conversationally:

Wikipedia redirects to 'Budgerigar' and refers to 'budgie' as a informal nickname--presumably something like how a rottweiler is called a rottie, or a Doberman Pinscher/Doberman is a dobbie

I'd like to say that the full name is probably decently known, but...

I dunno. Kids don't know that kinda stuff. Not that we need to kid proof things. but it's easy to take that knowledge further.

I actually though the full name was like, a family name for similar birds, but nope. Then again, I had cockatiels, and wanted a cat. :P
