Topic: Local storage image sorting methods

Posted under General

How do you all sort locally stored files? Specifically in a way that is modestly intuitive and not too difficult to browse through for specific themes/images? I am asking for a general sorting method, not one restricted to e621 (such as an e621 tagger). Right now my best idea is just nesting folder. A basic example: an NSFW and SFW folder that both contain Solo and Group folders, and so on. But this wouldn't account so well for images that are theme/kink oriented.

I am mostly interested in sorting strategies and/or programs that make sorting easy (such as an interface with more utility than windows explorer; Picasa comes to mind, but I am not sure if it is up to the task).

I use Adobe Lightroom. Mainly for photo sorting, but it works just as well for organizing other types of images. Makes it simple to browse, rate, and tag them. Can also easily sort them into directories, based on tags, ratings, etc.

Not free, though.

Tmsu tagging.
You could import the taggings from e621/whatever other site that has tagged images, and also add whatever tags you personally want to sort by. Then you can mount it and browse through the filesystem to see what images are tagged with a given tag / combo of tags.

Can be combined it with fzf -m and any image-viewer that supports custom commands/actions, to do any manual/large-scale tagging of images.

I'm uncertain of the status of TMSU virtual mounts on Windows, since I only use Linux. However, the method of using a virtual mount to browse the contents of a tag seems .. obviously correct? or at least very sane, to me.

I've basically been wanting a way to tag my music like this for the last decade. Thank you XD <3

As for PICTURES...

I actually figured out how to install and run my own imageboard software on my network. This worked especially well for me because I was largely operating this for purposes of art and writing references and inspiration-- I made my own collection of tags, aliases and implications for everything I wanted it for. It was a bit of hassle to initially set up--but I'd never done ANYTHING like that before. (as in, 2 or 3 days of "how do I...?" and trying to understand poorly written help files and whatnot) I don't know if it's possible to import preexisting tags somehow, but, like I said, it worked for me. I was more interested in tagging stuff like "desolate_mood" and "jungle" and whatnot.

That said, if you're comfortable with non-windows based systems, there are a LOT of other image board options than the one I used, which hasn't been updated in 4 years, but was called myimouto. might be other windows compatible ones too--this was about 4 years ago that I was doing my research.
