People have repeatedly complained that downvoting is a form of oppression.
And very hurtful.

Would it be OK if I (and everybody else who wants to) were to upvote every comment with a negative vote count?
A more extreme version would be to also downvote every comment with a positive count.

I would suggest a system like youtube where even the dumbest comments are safe from the horrors of *shudders* down votes.

A lot of comments deserve a lot more downvotes than they get.

Stop being so sensitive. If a different color arrow upsets you - the problem is a lot more deep-seeded than you think.

The fact that so many people seem to care if they get downvoted or upvoted is kind of strange. It's not like we get some sort of reward for getting a large number of likes. (Or is there a stipulation in the site's FAQ that I somehow missed after reading it numerous times due to my own anxiety issues?)

In fact, I wouldn't care if the system didn't exist. But my opinion about that is probably unpopular.

If it hurts their feelings it's their own damn problem. Why do people even care, it's not like you'll get anything from how many upvotes or downvotes a comment or post gets.

Because humans are social animals and feel pleasure when we are acknowledged positively. Negative feedback generally results in anger, sadness or other negative emotions.

Most creatures respond similarly which is why it's recommended that we praise good actions rather than punishing negative ones. In other words: when Fido poops outside, give him a pat and say GOOD BOY! rather than swat him with the paper when he fails.

Upvoting and downvoting is the same way. negative votes imply that we, socially, failed. Positive votes imply that we have succeeded.

No, we don't earn material benefit, but it does lead to interesting psychological effects. :)

The same thing happened on Steam now, instead of "3 out of 5 people found this review helpful" it now only lists the helpful and funny ones... and when you try to vote "No" on a review nothing happens.
