I know the minimum is four tags, but how many is considered "common courtesy"?
When i'm uploading something, i sometimes go: "Hmm, i could only come up with 20 tags, that's a bit naff"

Difficult question.
I always add as many tags as I can think of, but then again I don't post much anymore.

I was going to say 'more than average is good', but how much would that be anyway? The stats page doesn't list the total combined tag count for all posts.

In any case, there's countless old posts that lack basic of tags such as character count, not_furry, and genders. I think it'd be more useful to get those tagged site-wide, rather than spend time tagging the smallest detail for a single post.

Most people aren't going to go out of their way to tag old pictures, I think that tagging pictures as well as you can when you upload them is good practice, every tag is can be useful to someone, so a more comprehensively tagged post is good.
And users like Dice, me, and well, you already do go through and add/fix some of the "essential" tags to older posts and seem to enjoy doing it.

I consider the essential tags to be body type, species, amount of characters and the amount of characters in focus if applicable, whether they are clothed or nude, the amount of genders the collective characters have (obviously only attributing one per character), any gender pairings (male/male and so on) if applicable, all present forms of genitals and/or the presence of breasts or an anus, and whether or not the act of sex is occurring since it is not implied by many tags.

A full list of details is expansive and has already been linked, but I use these for when I'm fixing undertagged posts that I didn't upload. These all can be seen in the image without relying on external knowledge, and if the artist was not tagged or the source was not provided you can toss in unknown_artist or source_request; these are just really common for searching or blacklisting purposes.

I always tag, in addition to the above, any relevant background information (water fall, forest, outside, on_branch, etc) and some basic pose (standing, sitting..) fur/hair/eye color, clothing basics (shirt, jacket, pants)

but I also tag a lot, because I tend to go off on random tag searches for odd things and there are so many pictures I've never seen, all because no one thought the huge waterfall deserved a tag, y'know?

I always try to tag everything I see, but usually I consider a post is 'decently tagged' when it has at least the artist's tag, characters if apply, and 10-15 general tags depending of the pic

If you can think of more things to tag, then tag those more things. But if you can't think of anything else and already have the bare minimum, call it good.

I'd say that common courtesy includes

Category Example Example Example Example
Characters zero_pictured solo duo group
Sex male female dickgirl cuntboy
Species canine feline fox dragon
Body type anthro feral humanoid taur
Clothing nude topless bottomless clothed
Body parts penis balls pussy nipples
Sex acts handjob oral_penetration vaginal_penetration anal_penetration
For blacklisting gore obese cub not_furry

A table like this on the upload page would improve tagging immensely.

Nice table.
I wanted an ascii version to display inside my commandline tagger, so I converted it. Slightly less neat/obvious in notation, but more compact (had to be <= 50 characters wide):

-Category- -Examples-

Characters zero_pictured solo duo group
Sex male female dickgirl cuntboy
Species canine feline fox dragon
Body type anthro feral humanoid taur
Clothing nude top|bottomless clothed
Body parts penis balls pussy nipples
Sex acts handjob oral|vaginal|anal_penetration
Blacklisting gore obese cub not_furry

(the extra space on line 2 is because entirely blank lines are stripped out by e621. Probably a general behaviour that is implemented before processing of \

tags.)

This is wonderful! I can't tell you how much I wish more uploaders would tag things like obesity and huge proportions, and it just never happens. I would fully support a table like this on the upload page, just because it reminds people that blacklisting doesn't work without honest, accurate tagging.

You could easy add onto that last line and make it [[cub]]/[[child]], because cub is an invalid tag when it's also not_furry. Thanks to the column already being stretched by vaginal_penetration in the line above, it fits without issue.

Courtesy for me, personally, is to at the very least go through my Quick Tags list.
To make your own, go into your settings and add useful tags to the Quick Tags field. It's an easy way to make sure basic stuff gets added to the upload, as you'll see them in a permanent list under the upload section, just clicking the tag in the list adds it to the others in the tags section of the upload.

Here's mine for example:
nude
clothed
gay
straight
female
male
dickgirl
herm
sex
solo
masturbation
breasts
big_breasts
areola
nipples
pussy
erection
penis
big_penis
balls
big_balls
butt
big_butt
anus
taint
anal_penetration
vaginal_penetration
oral_penetration
cum ejaculation
cum_inside
cum_in_ass
cum_in_pussy
cum_in_mouth

I'd probably add mostly_nude and cboy on there as well as few longer tags like the featureless_* tags.

Furthermore I'd recommend using the eSix Extend script the TinyAlias function is kinda like having a Quick Tags list for your keyboard and also it doesn't get more cumbersome the more tags you add to it I myself have every background tag (black, white, red, detailed, pattern, gradient, transparent, etc.) on there and it makes adding those really easy.
