Topic: having trouble with tumblr

Posted under General

so how does one go about downloading/uploading FULL size tumblr images. I know already that you have to change the numbers to "raw" and all that stuff, and that's worked out pretty well so far. but now i'm having a different problem. how do you change a jpeg image into a png image? I've been trying different things forever now and I just keep getting errors so if anyone could help, that'd be awesome.

If data.tumblr---_raw.xyz is a .jpg then there's nothing you can do except to upload it directly (Do NOT save it to your harddrive!). If it's a .png already, then it should be safe either way, but you might have something that automates saving images as JPGs instead of PNGs.

upload it directly? and how does one do that

In the upload form you can simply enter the direct url of the image rather than uploading a file. It's a text box on the upload screen labeled "OR Upload from URL"

If it was a JPG to begin with I don't believe there's anything you can do, since that should be the highest quality possible for the file. BUT if it started as a PNG and somehow turns into a JPG thru upload even with a direct upload... that is a little weird. It seems to be out of the uploader's control from what I've seen.

If you want to make things easier for yourself, install the user script linked in here. Now when you open up the tumblr image in new tab in any way, your browser should automatically change the URL to be correct one. Now you can simply copy-paste this url with raw at the end to upload forms direct URL upload field.

This should avoid any mistakes that might happen if you do everything manually. Sadly there isn't exactly any more direct way of doing things with tumblr.

And like Dice said, it can be whatever filetype artist uploaded themselves. It's just that it seems like they are doing furaffinitys and stating sample files to be PNG even though in reality they are JPG and e621 will correct this automatically after hitting upload.

So I'm still seeing you are uploading tumblr samples (even says _1280. in provided source) and even deleted one PNG file which was resaved from JPG. post #1550102

I would seriously try checking that no other software is intervening with your file handling and learning the process, because JPG files saved as PNG will make me mad.

Are you saying that saving a JPG as a PNG does not magically improve its quality?

You told me to not save JPGs as JPGs and now you're saying to save JPGs as JPGs? Or did you get the filetypes backwards in that sentence?

I can say that saving a JPG as a JPG magically decreases its quality. Or maaaaybe that's only if you open it.

Context and common sense, please.

If you are getting original file from artist and posting it in here, you post it as is. Converting the filetype to PNG does not increase the quality and can be seen as bypassing dublicate detection and as trying to replace best quality content (which has happened in past and have gotten people banned). JPG files saved as PNG are also always handled as inferior versions.

If you are editing JPG file, then you need to save it as PNG to avoid further degratation. JPG is lossy fileformat, so saving it again doubles that lossy compression, even 100 quality is still lossy meaning there's still loss of quality but now also the filesize is extremely bloated.

If you need to rotate or crop the JPG files, this can be done without actually saving it again, but this cannot be done with photo editors and requires software made specifically for this purpose. This is why there has been photograph uploads here with wrong orientation, because it's easier for camera software to just tell to rotate image when it's viewed rather than rotate it themselves.
