Is there a way to search for a username the same way you would with a tag or comment? Like with wildcards and all that.

Yes, go to "My Account" and click "List" in the top left corner. On that page click "Show Search Options".

If you have the mobile layout activated you have to tap the 3 horizontal bars at the top to expand the menu there, then you should see the options.
