Topic: Multiple wildcards gone?

Posted under General

Hi! I used to be able to search using multiple wildcards, today The site wouldn’t let me. Is there a new restriction? And why?

We had to change wildcard searches recently because they are murder on the site performance, especially in combination with metatags.

As with many things, you learn the lingo the longer your'e a part of it, if you want to, anyway.

a wildcard is basically, a way of saying "search for anything that matches the rest of this." It's the * character.

So, if you are interested in, say, then anal tags, you could search for anal* and you'll get a list of every tag that starts with A N A L from Anal to anal_penetration, to Analyst

Or, if you're looking for a particular type of cat, but you can't remember how to spell it's species.. it was pomfies cat or an alias cat or something. you can search *cat and get:
cat
scat
saber-toothed_cat

and a WHOLE LOT of other results, so you try *_cat instead so it must search for the _ too and finally find the Pallas's_cat

Or, or let's say you can't remember how to spell raccoon .. one c or two? you you search for ra*oon you will get raccoon. and rave_raccoon, and raycoon, and rainbow_moon and rabbitinthemoon, but you know how raccoon is spelled now.

This artist goes by snudraw, snuudraw, snu_draw snuu_draws, snu_drawfest and a few other variants and you can't remember what the tag is here. snu*draw* will work for you. :)

A wildcard is a character that is a replacement for any number of other characters.

Metatags are basically tags that refer not to the content, but for how the site an the content interact -- who uploaded it, who faved it, what date was it uploaded, how many upvotes does it have, etc etc. so if you're looking for that anal raccoon picture from sometimes in the last month... boom.

I hope wildcards remain an option for wiki/tag searches, that's going to seriously hinder finding new tags otherwise.
Was the vote up/down mouseover stat also removed for this reason?

(though every time I've had to bracket 2-3 letter strings in a pair of * I always imagine the server making horrible grinding noises on the other end)

Wildcards will work just fine with tag and wiki search. This is actually more preferred way to first seek out tag you want instead of just wildcarding it in post search in cases where wildcard is used to guess what tags might be in use. This also makes searching much more reliable and faster.

Up/Downvotes when hovering was removed because it was causing strain on servers and if I remember correctly it will come back once it's being reworked on.

I still wish there was a way to use multiple wildcards in the same search.
