Closest I can think of is dyna_blade_(species), which seems to have built in armor and a whip-neck to shoot the head forward a ways. Less of an "open species" though, it was made by HAL to give Kirby a storyline in which he faces off against a monstrous enemy who turned out to just be helping her children.
