Topic: Unauthorized edits: how do I handle these?

Posted under General

The second image is an unauthorized edit of artwork featuring my character. (It also violates redistribution guidelines outlined in the license, but I'm not worried about that for the moment.) What can I do to get this unauthorized edit removed? I would prefer that any existing alternate versions of images be provided by myself for various reasons.

What's wrong with removing just the marker/pen markings? I agree that is an unauthorized edit, but, for me it's minor. I'd say that he's just the first man (shark?) on it. If it was a larget edit (recolor, gender, other char in the same position, etc) then that would be a reason to really complain IMHO.

But if you're not comfortable with that, like Husky said, flag it and let it go.

But really. This is just a storm in a glass of water. I mean, it's just a small edit. Obviously, not taking into account the redistribution part. If I do, well, that'd be a different comment. But for now, we'll just focus on the edit.

Nothing, as long as I'm the one to request an official version from the original artist. I actually meant to do this (for various reasons) but forgot to do so.

I would vastly prefer that no one alters images depicting my characters without permission, as this feels disrespectful both to the artist as the one who created the work and to me as the one who decided that the image was to be done in this way.

See? You and the user who edited this agree the same thing! :)

At least the user who posted it (and maybe edited too) put it as the child of the original one (but forgot to source to the original. I'd source it, but flag). Hmmm, I guess you're right, with the "respect" part. Personally, I don't upload commissions because I respect the artist and commissioner (uploaded two, with permission).

Also, I think you should change your disclaimer, to a little bit less agressive.

As the owner of the character, I feel I have a right to share her with a place such as this. Many artists I talk to agree that e621 is a great way to get more well known as an artist or as a recognizable character, as e621 is more easily accessible than FurAffinity and similar services and is thus open to a wider audience. (Plus, e621 submissions have been pre-screened by uploaders for quality, cutting out most of the crap from FurAffinity's gallery so that we only see semi-good or better stuff here.) If an artist wishes to deny me the ability to share an image depicting my character, which I implicitly hold partial rights to, I will take the necessary actions and additionally will decline to hire their services again.

Why so serious?

My liberal application of a "serious" attitude allows me to channel anger into constructing long-winded, lengthy and precise phrases in order to most accurately present the point I am making without breaking out the ad hominem.

I think that takedown request would be more appropriate than flagging. I've seen few takedowns which were about unauthorized edit.

Updated by anonymous

Takedown request is the way to go because this.

The deletion request reasons that are acceptable are:

- Duplicate of #postnumber
- Inferior (i.e. smaller, sketch, cropped, or resized) version of #postnumber
- Updated version has been posted (usually applies to a flash)
- Drawn by an artist or owned by a site on the DNP list
- Violates the site's posting rules

and this

You SHOULD submit a takedown request if you are one of the following:

  • Artist wanting their own artwork removed.
  • Character owner wanting artwork featuring their character removed.
  • Publisher wanting a publication or excerpts of a publication removed. Please note that these takedowns can potentially be a little trickier to handle properly, and so communication with a site admin will likely be needed after submitting the takedown request.

That's a piss poor attitude that leaves this site empty, ESPECIALLY with the character owner being civil about it

Just wondering, if you meant to do this edit but forgot, why would someone else doing it for you be an issue?

This is a pretty piss-poor attitude about things. You're pretty much saying right in public that you will willingly and blatantly show no respect for artists and characters drawn.

If I let people start walking all over me now, they'll start thinking they can get away with more and more shit. They're like little children - you have to tell them now that you're not going to let them do that.

Hey that's my line, and yes, takedown request, not FFD, says right under the flagging guidelines.

Also, conker stop trying to flamebait, no excuses, enough jabbing at people here

I submitted the takedown request, but I'm not entirely sure I want to wait for Char to perform administrative duties...

I'm genuinely curious, why is this walking all over you?
This edit isn't hurting you (or your character for that matter) in any way and they aren't reprieving you of anything.
The editor probably just thought it was awesome but could still be more awesome.
That is (in my eyes) like Newton telling Einstein he isn't allowed to work on his rule of gravity because it would alter Newton's law of gravity.

But then again, I grew up to share what I can share, be it ideas, man power or items, sure I may "lose" something temporary, but I will get back so much more in the long run. (In your case, free art)

You will have to, and I highly doubt this edit will spawn anything truly malicious for you in that matter.
Nobody is out to get you; except conker.

You know the nice thing about that image? The marks and marker were on a separate layer, so I was able to get a clean "edit" of the image from the artist himself, which is what's important to me.

Personally, I've seen far too many of my favorite artists stop posting their works because of unauthorized edits, even tiny ones. Seems to be the leading cause of artists dropping out. So I tend to take it seriously myself.

I've elected to flag the edit for deletion again as it is technically inferior to the official version, which is its current parent post. The offending image was created from the raster, while the official version was created from the full-resolution original SAI document by simply hiding two layers.

It's the thought that counts.™

Now it would be real ironic if the 'original edit' would be deleted as a repost of the 'unauthorized edit'.
But I don't think that would happen.
