Topic: Is it just me or does order:random not really seem to be random?

Posted under General

So I have a lot of favourites, and I like to just use order:random on them. I've been noticing that it doesn't really seem to be random though...

For a good month or two I used order:random daily and noticed that the same favourites would pop up all the time. I went looking through my favs list normally after this time and noticed that I hadn't seen many of the favourites I scrolled past in ages.

Am I misunderstanding the way this tag/filter works? Does it not handle randomly sorting large sets of tags very well or am I just crazy?

Anyone who has some thoughts here would be great, I think this Is going to drive me nuts. Is there a better way to randomly sort your favourites?

Do you mean randomly sorting a large result set? because fav:ctahrpoe order:random isn't a large set of tags.

I can't comment on exactly how the algorithm works or whether the PRNG used is statistically well distributed, but I've seen a lot of spurious 'this isn't random' complaints and in general would ask 'is this
clustering illusion or gambler's fallacy ?' before considering the RNG.
