Many of those have hardly any images, but if you want to list them regardless of numbers:

richmond_tigers I-> afl
adelaide_crows I-> afl
brisbane_lions I-> afl
gold_coast_suns I-> afl
greater_western_sydney_giants I-> afl
western_bulldogs I-> afl

Yeah, I'm more listing them regardless of numbers, but if anything the ones that need the implications the most in my suggestions imho are the japanese/nippon professional baseball teams, which have a lot of content but lack a loooot of implications.

I've noticed that one of the implications to mlb is toronto_bluejays. This spelling is incorrect; it's toronto_blue_jays. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto_Blue_Jays) I've already moved the only post under toronto_bluejays to the correct toronto_blue_jays. Could you please change the implication to toronto_blue_jays -> mlb and add an alias for toronto_bluejays -> toronto_blue_jays?

The task has been accomplished

why exactly we are using acronyms for these instead of the full titles? like the standard is that we use full titles as tags instead of shortenings and acronyms, why these are an exception? also the tags would be a lot more descriptive for people like me who dont know jack shit about sports. i had no idea what those three letter strings were for until i opened the wiki and saw the full titles.

There's nothing stopping us from fixing that.

afl A-> australian_football_league
nfl A-> national_football_league
mlb A-> major_league_basebal
nba A-> national_basketball_association

We might have some others floating about. I don't think we have anything related to NRL or NBL) yet.

Edit: Add "nrl A-> national_rugby_league" to the list, along with:

I mean, technically things like DC_Comics is an acronym. The name formed from an early comic they did, "detective comics", but "detective comics comics" wouldn't really be a good or helpful way to tag that acronym

Personally, if an acronym has become an iconic name at this point, I don't see why it can't stay an acronym in this case, especially when the full title could be incredibly awkward.

BUT, as @BlueDingo suggested, if this is disagreed with we could easily fix it with aliases to the full titles of said acronyms no problem. Just, in this case, the I feel the acronym has become synonymous with the terms at this point imho. But, again, that's just my personal view on the matter

I'd argue for something like nfl_football so that the tags can be more easily found by people. Or maybe a parent tag like nfl implies american_football

I dunno.

It depends on if the acronym is iconic enough to have become a name in its own right. DC Comics has done so, to the point that its actual, original meaning is meaningless anymore. I'd argue not so for the various sports leagues. There's still value in spelling out that the NFL is the National Football League and not the National Front for Liberation, for example. Don't forget there are a number of viewers who don't care enough about sports to differentiate between the NFL and the AFL, much less American football and soccer.

Given a choice, I'd prefer the acronyms written out.
