Topic: Think before you comment: Or risk sounding like an idiot

Posted under General

You've all encountered it, the guy who always abbreviated every word, the guy who role plays sex in the comments, the attention whore who comments on every single picture he finds with some attention whoring answer, and the guy who sounds downright idiotic and illiterate.

Seriously, don't post stuff like this, it's annoying to some people who visit the site and it puts them off because of the very nature of the comment. And I know some people don't mind this kind of stuff, that's alright. But I know there are a lot of people who don't.

Think before you comment, and don't become 'the guy' who posts that cringeworthy stuff.

I've seen worse...

Some range from "hot" to "Good job!" while others jump through the borders of extreme and do walls of text...

Nothing's wrong with a 'hot' or a 'good job'. It's more the people who feel the need to comment "I THINK A VOLCANO JUST ERUPTED IN MY PANTS!!! HHNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGG!!!"

Just imagine that last one in really big text.

I meant the first two in the context of being spammy, but yeah, creepy comments like that are offputting. You can report them, though, if an admin agrees with your reasoning it will be removed...

This post is really just a PSA for people who don't think before they post such things, really. It's just better for us all if we straight up fix the problem.

Oh! So that's the deal! Well, I have to admit that I've done the same (heck, if you look at my comment history you'll notice that I've gone that route several times) and pretty much everyone has one of those moments (though there are some that are still in it)...

Realistically, you can't fix people's behaviors to match yours (or be more thoughtful, in this case). Most users normally submit a ticket and let an admin handle it (this place is really transparent in that regard, except for user reports privacy, man! ). If you're not one of that kind, tell 'em something like "hey dude, I don't recommend you to do that" (or something along those lines and at the same time not acting like a mod) and if you see them doing the same over and over, let the staff know about it by, again, submitting a ticket...

Publicly calling out other users by name is in poor taste. Maybe you should stop worrying so much about what other people say over the internet and start taking your own advice a bit more? Because, between the pretentiously self-righteous "royal we" vibe AND the singling out of a few users by name for public ridicule...this post is entirely what I would consider a "cringeworthy" type of post.

And the people you singled out? I just see a whole lot of unseriousness going on. People are allowed to post unserious comments. Sometimes by trying to expose people who only personally annoy you, it backfires exponentially. This is one of those times. I personally think you owe them an apology but that's just my opinion. I feel like this post is in worse taste than a million posts made in chat speak. It oversteps a line.

/just my two cents

This smells a lot like backseat moderating. Maybe OP should take his own advice.

OP,

Remove the links to specific user profiles, and allude to their comments in your post. It will strengthen your argument.

Also, as ippiki said, please take care to not say things like "don't post this stuff". A better way to phrase it is like "I wouldn't post stuff like this". It sounds less like a command and more like an opinion/recommendation.

Calling out specific users in the forums is not necessarily good either.

Normally :P

Sorry guys, obviously pointing it out in a post was not the way to go, next time i will consider reporting quietly instead of making a big deal out of it.
