Topic: What are some words or phrases you dislike?

Posted under Off Topic

This topic has been locked.

There's certain words that just make people's skin crawl, like 'moist' or 'irregardless' and while I don't necessarily hate moist, I will admit that it's not a very pleasant word to hear.
I've got plenty of words I'm not to wild about and I'm sure you guys do as well, so why not share what they are? Feel free to explain why you dislike them.

Here are some words I dislike:

-Catchy (People using this to describe songs they like irritates me for some reason)

-Cheesy (I find this one very unpleasant to hear)

-Edgy (Tired of seeing this one get tossed around like candy)

-Cringe (Can this shitty overused word please just die already?)

-Angry (Not sure why I dislike this one, but I do)

-Selfie (I don't really care about the act itself but the word can die in a fire)

-Git Gud (This one makes me want to recreate the infamous cheese grater image everytime it gets dropped)

This last one isn't necessarily a word but I really hate it when people go 'awwwww'. Ugh, horrible. (>_<)

Trending. 99% of whatever is trending on social media is always pure shit and only ever popular for the wrong reasons, so I suppose I would say that one.
Although, I feel like any answer to this question is going to be more about the implication of the words given, rather than how they actually sound.

Tail hole
orbs/jewels/etc (referring to testicles. Balls is ok)
any furry "murry purry" slang
tep
pfp instead of avatar

Can't say that I can think of any that I dislike or hate. I can normally tolerate alot from people when it comes their choice of words, now behaviors..thats a entirely different story.

Though I will admit that Git Gud phrase can be annoying when its used by someone who is anything but good at a game and just get lucky.

+1 to furry slang. paws, murr, yiff, and so on. great recipe for secondhand embarrassment.

I wasn't a fan of "Git Gud" but then I heard Hornet saying it and now it doesn't bother me.

On topic though, am I allowed to say emojis? I hate emojis.

I'm not really a fan of the word 'yiff', either. I like the content but the word? Not so much.

i honestly really dont care about dumb phrases people say. waste of my energy to get mad about something so trivial.

Updated by anonymous

For me, it was always MLP-ified slang and wordplay. It just rubbed me the wrong way.

Examples:

"on the other hoof" (humans don't have 'em.)
"nopony" (as if ponies aren't somebodies and need a special word)
"everypony" (same as above)
"brohoof" (took a word I didn't care for in the first place and made it worse, and again, humans have hands)
"what in equestria" (but we live on Earth...)

There may be more, but trying to google "mlp-ified slang" just brings up results for "what is mlp slang for" and I can't remember any other off the top of my head. I haven't heard any of these in a long time, thankfully, so perhaps either people decided that MLP-ified words were not worth using, or the MLP craze has died off. No offense meant to watchers of the show, either.

On a minor, non-MLP note, I never liked the phrase "paw off". As with "brohoof" and "other hoof" above, we don't have paws, no matter how much you fantasize having them. And we humans wank off. We don't "hand off".

Also, "incel" and "chad". What do they even mean!?

"Save the date." I hated it the first time I heard it, and I still hate it now. Hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it.

If someone tells me to save the date, not only am I not going to whatever event they have planned, but I will intentionally book something else that day.

It's just so trite and overused. After 20 years of hearing it, I really wish people would come up with something new.

No, because the crying laughing emoji is ironic.

Also, everything is ironic.

I'm actually kinda okay with certain MLP slang, but only in very specific settings and if it's overused it drives me nuts.

In some ways I am an old man inside, and I despise:

"Literally" used outside of the most strict definition of the word
Misuse of "nauseous" when nauseated is appropriate
Using texting language out loud i.e. "lol!" "omg!"
"Selfie" is pretty bad
Clickbait phrases in general
"OMG"
"Should of"
"For your FYI"
"Could care less"
"Baby mama"
Targeted social phrases such as "manspreading", "bropropriate". Regardless of who it is directed at, it is annoying and shallow "power-language" (gag).

There's plenty of others, but I can't think of them all.

Maybe I'm just nitpicky, but I wish people would try to be more correct in their English. For instance, "nowadays" is the correct way to say, "In the current time." but people often (and not without reason) assume that it's a corrupted version of "nowdays", which is incorrect.

Lance_Armstrong said:

Misuse of "ironic" haha.

Updated by anonymous

Oh and my all time favorite

"could care less" that means you do care. "Couldn't care less" is the grammatically correct way.

Updated by anonymous

"Decimate/Decimated" used wrong. Like it normally is. :/

"The base was completely decimated." Completely destroyed, not just 10 percent or so as it should mean.

Updated by anonymous

"amazeballs", because "amazing" isn't cool enough, apparently.

The majority of english words that originated in french. They're rarely spelled the way they sound and vice versa. (eg. "toilette" looks like "toi-let" but is pronounced "twuh-let".)

The name "Abcde". It sounds OK when pronounced "ab-si-dee" but looks stupid when written. See also "La-a" (pronounced "luh-da-shuh").

Updated by anonymous

"Moist" (Can't stop thinking of that old lady)
"Murr" (Never caught onto it, never will)
"Yiff" (Read above)
"Boy pussy" (Just...stop)
"Hecking" (Overused and got sick of seeing it, especially on posts that are dog-related)
"Doggo" (Was on-board at first, but again, overused and got sick of it)
"Snatch" (The slang version referring to female's privates. Leave that in 2004)
"Babe" and "Baby" (We ain't babies, we grown-ish)
"Boujee" (Never liked this one)
"Ratchet" (Never liked this one either)
"Pawing off" (No)
The N-word (Both spellings. Overused-to-extinction, the go-to when you're super angry on the internet for some reason, and I personally find anyone that uses it are silly and childish)

Updated by anonymous

"Yikes" Really annoying and basic response to things. Doesn't convey any real opinions or input on the topic, instead it's just a lazy reaction for the sake of reacting

"Cringe" Same as above

"Literally" Misused to hell and back

"The hill you wanna die on" I truly loath this phrase, and (for the most part) the way of thinking behind it. This is rarely used in serious topics, but almost always petty opinionated shit, and is always used as a sloppy "get out of the argument free" card for someone who can't adequately defend their stance, but still wants to claim the high ground.

"____phobe/phobic" Same as above, more often than not just a lazy word people spout to shame/silence the opposition when they have a disagreement, but want to have the sole/final say on the matter.

Updated by anonymous

Most furshit speak sounds pretty odd. And roleplay phrases like *glomps you* are turbo cringe.

AgentParadox said:
Also, "incel" and "chad". What do they even mean!?

Since no one else has answered...

Look, this shit gets pretty grim. So, Trigger warnings.

Incel means "involuntarily celibate". This is... okay, I don't think I can talk about this and maintain a neutral stance. Basically: 'incel' is used to describe a *specific* group of people made up of persons who wants to be having sex but aren't having sex. This group of people (who self ID as 'incels') typically blame "chad" for taking all the good women, and using them up, so that they're not worth having sex with anymore. Generally speaking, they have very unhealthy ideas about what sex is, what women are, and how men and women should interact.

Incel is sometimes tossed around as an insult towards some people, however if someone is self-id'ing as an incel, they likely have these unhealthy opinions.

They have been identified as a hate group, and people connected with their subculture have--recently--committed mass murders.

Wikipedia has more information. It's a bit dry, but having delved into this when I, too, wondered "what is an incel"... well, I felt pretty nauseated after what I found. This was before they were banned from reddit.

Not ever incel is going to be a mass murderer, but they belong to an unhealthy community promoting unhealthy ideas. (because, really, anyone who advocates rape is a shithead.)

"hotdog down a hallway"
"I said slay the dragon, not lay the dragon!"

I really enjoy small dom big sub, especially when its a human on a larger dragon. As a result, I read both the phrases constantly and it got old years ago. Do people seriously think those phrases are still funny?

Updated by anonymous

I enjoy size difference + dragons too, but never heard "lay the dragon" until recently.

As for "hotdog down a hallway", I know what it means, but I can't not picture a more literal interpretation where a person throws a hotdog to mess around and it slides down a hallway and trails brine everywhere.

Twitterisms used as thought-terminating clichés: "yikes"

"that's the tea"

"this ain't it chief"

middle-class people from San Francisco, Portland, or somewheres using the word "y'all"

Also when people say "I could care less." That means you do care.

I am also triggered by NEET gamers misapplying terminology they don't understand and appropriating words by doing this. My biggest pet peeve is when they use the word "sniper" to refer to the weapon instead of the wielder. "Get the sniper" can now mean several very different things because gamers either don't know what words mean or can't be arsed to utter two extra syllables. Yikes. I have also always found it silly to apply terms like "tank" to medieval fantasy settings instead of using a more meaningful and less anachronistic word.

Updated by anonymous

I fucking hate it when people use the word underrated instead of underappreciated or overlooked when talking about a game, show, song, etc. I am not a native english speaker but underrated sounds like the thing that is being described is bad or inferior.

I've got another one, 'nitpicking'. This term adheres to people who make a big deal over small things but it's origin is pretty nasty, it refers to the process of removing headlice eggs (which are called nits) from someone's hair.

Gross.

They don't deserve any sort of terminology. They should be title-less and forgotten.

Updated by anonymous

My issue with "incel" is that it almost immediately came to mean "person I don't like/disagree with." It doesn't really mean what it used to in my personal experience.

For a while, it described a very specific group of self-identifying people, many of whom were indeed pretty bitter, resentful folks. This association led to it becoming an insult, and before anyone knew it, it was a lot of people's go-to way to demean people for such things as having unfavorable political views or even not liking particular movies.

The word became a general-purpose condemnation and now hardly means anything, kind of like "hipster." It happened a lot faster, though.

Pfp does annoy me anymore. Not every place calls it avatar, so I just go with "profile". Since it's an actual word.

"Poop" is the only one that really bothers me. It's bad enough when a kid says it, but I've also heard my adult roommate say "I've got to take a poop" several times. It's immature-sounding and unpleasant. Either use a euphemism, say you're going to the bathroom, or say nothing at all because no one cares.

Plenty of situations where people do care. If you go to the bathroom, you're away for a bit. Peeing tends to be a quick break, pooping not so. Quicker to say "gotta poop" than "taking a long bathroom break."

Updated by anonymous

"Use the restroom/bathroom" is a very formal/polite way of talking about it and a lot of people prefer to speak more casually. Poop seems like a good compromise between casualness without being crude.

(I mean, my RL nickname is "Cat" so I tend to make a joke about going to the little cat's room, or the litter box or something, and possible the state me of "being a moment" if needed, but I'd rather hear "gotta poop" over "I need to take a shit" or "Take a dump" or some "colorful" statement about dropping deuces or talking to a man about a horse or whatever. )

Ratte said:

Ah... Well, then again, I am always one for saving syllables *shrug*

Updated by anonymous

I tend to bring either a book or my computer into the bathroom regardless, so I spend far too much time in their no matter why I went in. This is clearly the perfect solution, because then I don't need to specify how long I'll be in - it's just assumed I'll be in there for too long.

Updated by anonymous

"Poop" also bugs me slighty. Naturally one should say, "I've got to use the loo" :D

I really do say that sometimes, just for fun. An Australian friend of mine sometimes says "I'm gonna drop off the kids at the pool."

You know what's super ironic to me is that a lot of the words/phrases/slang that I thought were really fucking stupid when I first heard them are now some of the things I use regularly in my daily vocabulary. For example - "bruh", "homie", "ratchet", etc. Stupid millennial slang that ironically enough I first heard out of the mouths of my 30+ year old coworkers at my job that I started at age 21 and probably should have been privy to well before then. I mean no matter how much you despise something, if you're around it long enough the shit will catch on. I also used to be offended by the faggot word at one time, being of the homosexual persuasion, but again, now one of my favorite words that I playfully use to address any and all gay comrades I encounter in my travels. I get a lot of shit for that one, I forget sometimes that not everyone's cool with it :/

If we're talking not necessarily words-words, then when people make fake throw-up noises. It annoys me a lot because pretty much every female who wasn't in my friend circle at school made that noise when something gross happened, and some guys, too. A person I like watching on Youtube has a tendency of doing it too, and the one time I said "you know, this sound is a little irritating", I wasn't even being malicious or anything and was suggesting something genuine. However, I still got angry comments sent my way of "ra ra ra not it's not" and "our <name> can do whatever he wants nyehh!" and "fuck you for not liking everything he says or does" so I just had to put up with it.

"Rawr XD". It's almost always ironic, but:
*ironic usage of this cursed phrase tends to make for shitty jokes
*Metaironic usage, though rare, is a day ruiner whenever it occurs.
*Pataironic I've not yet stumbled upon, probably because of how hard it is to construct something as elaborate as a pataironic joke while thinking about a manifestation of the very concept of mental retardation.

That's not what it means. A lot of people don't like those who advocate for men's rights because they either believe that men live life on easy mode and don't have any struggles, it takes focus and resources away from women's issues as if empathy is a zero-sum game, or both.

It's more like MRAs don't do literally anything to advance men's rights, they just complain about it when women get the same rights that men already have.

Sigh I am very likely to regret opening this can of worms, but what is wrong with gamer? It is nothing more then a simple descriptor denoting people who greatly enjoy playing games. Of which I(And the 4 others I share this account with.) fall under. And a label I wear with pride as well, along with nerd, and otaku.

As to the OP. There a few words and phrases I dislike, but nothing I care to list cause I know it will cause problems. And sides nothing I really take umbrage with anyway because language is contextual. No words really have power outside of context.
