Topic: More proeminent admin posts in forums

Posted under General

In long threads or discussions, sometimes the admins or mods threads will get easily diluted in the discussion.

I would like to have some way to make the admins and mods (and perhaps janitors) threads more proeminent than the rest. Perhaps a different color in the admin word or even a different color in the whole forum posts just like our own hidden ones.

I'm posting this because I am a very distracted person and just missed unintentionally an admin authority, so I would like to make the system better.

Anyway, any suggestions?

Iunno really, changing text colour might be bad since some colours are hard to read/strain the eyes when put against the background (Since it is possible to change the site theme yourself). Maybe some kind of icon in the top left corner of that users post.

You mean admin's posts?

On it, I'd say that a distinctive near the user name or the user level would be nice, that or a different color on the names

Btw, this should be in the feature request thread...

Hmm... Maybe a different colour and bolded title for them, when they speak with their mod/admin authority? Give it to them via a toggle per post so they can choose to post as their own person rather than purely as a representative of the Bad Dragon staff?

I just posted it here because I don't know exactly what is the best way to do it. Just figured I could gather some ideas before posting it the feature request thread with a solid description.

Meh, it may not be good for new users, but admin posts are always obvious to me since they never really change there avatars :P

What happened to me is that I posted at the same time as an admin so I skipped his post entirely :P

Nevertheless, the new users are probably the ones that need more control from authority. At least some user settings to control this would be great.

What about just changing the color of their usernames? Or perhaps a star or other graphic next to their names? Porque no Los dos?

That would be fine by me :)

They have an "Admin" graphic next to their names already.

With the smallest font size text used on the site, in a nice, bland, gray color on a dark background.

I don't think animations are a good idea. especially not with obsolete tags like those two. (Chrome doesn't even recognise <blink>.)

I'd say either make admin names greentext (like positive scores or safe rating texts), or put an icon or a character somewhere that's noticeable enough.

I definitely agree that important messages should stand out more, not all admin posts but just the 'stawp or get a whipping' variety. Just give them a color or something.

Because we all received neutral records for continuing that certain thread after EDF posted some pretty discrete "move along folks" warning in the midst of all the bitching. In my case it isn't that bad because I also got an older record removed (thanks!), but still. Even if I had consciously read it I kind of doubt I'd have known it was meant as a hard line, but at least it should be very noticeable so that you can't miss it, while at the same time knowing for certain something's meant to be taken quite seriously.

And, uhm... Wouldn't it perhaps have been better to just lock the thread there and then, cause that happened a short while later anyway. What's the point in keeping it open if apparently nobody's allowed to say one more word?

Because it was for the arguing to stop. Had the conversation been civil or constructive (some of the comments were), there would have been no reason to lock.

S'all good, s'all good... all of us got a slap in teh hands...

Also, if I recall correctly, there even was a suggestion in the feature request thread about the same thing (adding a distinctive to user levels or colors like the ones in user profiles) but I think it got lost in the sea of other suggestions

Quoting my own post because people keep saying something vague, whilst I gave a very specific way that can be toggled on and off. >_>

Well, then could you tell us what was uncivilized or deconstructive about this?

I mean, the guy got a record for it all the same.

Eh, I didn't comment on it because I preferred the other ideas posted. Not to say its a bad idea, reddit uses that same system and it works well enough, but here's why its not my first choice.

Admins have avatars that seem to change rarely, so once you learn who they are its usually easy to spot them, but on reddit that's not the case so they NEED a way to get attention. It looks like they can already toggle a 'serious mode' and make themselves very noticeable by changing their own text using color and font size whenever they feel like, as husky demonstrated. Furthermore I don't think that admins need to have to remember to switch on their serious mode, they should just always be slightly more noticeable.

Please stop arguing about that other post. I created this post to try and make this forum better. That thread is on the past and let's forget about it. I don't want to make this personal.

We all have personal opinions but there must be someone to make the final decisions and that is why there are admins and mods. I really would love to at least have the option to detect the admins posts easier. It would be a shame if this thread gets locked because of some off topic discussion.

Sorry, I didn't mean to make it seem like we're about to start that crap again. D:

But it seriously looked as though you were nodding at that thread in your OP, so I thought a few after-the-fact questions about it weren't completely misplaced here.

It's fine. It's true that I remembered to start this thread because of that post. But this is way beyond that.
We sorted things out via PM (which is the right way to do it). We're fine now.

Well, at least whatever happened there supports the suggestion here. Again, I agree that stuff like that makes you wish for instantly recognizable admin statements when they're deemed necessary.

1. Find user style sheet.
2. Add the following:

.response-list > .comment[data-author="dasadevil"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="edfdarkangel1"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="dragonfruit"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="thehuskyk9"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="inquiry"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="spight"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="ratte"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="char"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="varka"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="notmenotyou"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="dragonranger"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="ktkr"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="ippiki_ookami"] {border:dotted yellow 12px;}
.response-list > .comment[data-author="tony311"] {border:dotted yellow 3px;}

3. If it doesn't work, game over

How about just bolding the 'Admin'? That'd probably make it sufficiently easier to notice, especially in post comments.

Then..... wait, so the topic couldn't be locked because of uncivility, blah blah blah, stupid shit, but he was civilized, blah blah blah, stupid yet civilized shit was said, blah blah, unreasonable thread lock.
Pretty sure my point is somewhere around in that jumble.....

Opps. Not previleged yet so no colors for my quotes :P

Quick off topic question: If I suddenly got to a privileged position will my color tags work on my older posts? If yes I could use them now so they'll pop up in the future :P

Most of those are almost invisible with the Serpent theme, and hard to see with Hot Dog.

Really? Member may be a bit hard to read, but the others seem fine.
