Topic: How can I be sure this isn't posted yet?

Posted under General

Well, I'm working on posting "this one" artist's commisions to e621.

The problem is that here he has only 400+ of his posts uploaded here, but on FA, he has over 1600++ posts.

I'm afraid that I may repost some of his work, is there a way e621 can detect that?

Ok, so the website can detect whether the image name is already here or not.

Well, I'd better start uploading!

I think it only detects if it's exactly the same. If it's smaller or larger or different minutely from another version already uploaded, then you could still be uploading something that might end up flagged.

IF you don't want to gamble and want to actually make sure it's not already here, you can either get really familiar with what's already uploaded and compare things manually. Which is difficult when an artist has that many images, I know.

Or you could use this: http://iqdb.harry.lu/ It's the image search for e621. Run the file you want to upload through that first, and see if it matches anything. Just as a way to doublecheck that you're not going to regret uploading it.

If it's the same file and source, then yes, I believe it will sort it out.

Thx for the tips.

I may just scan through every image, non-colored & colored, and see which has not been uploaded yet.

Allow me to repeat what a useful tool this is: http://iqdb.harry.lu/

Especially since it's able to detect similarities rather than just identical images, which makes it a lot more capable at filtering out potential reposts.

That seems pretty neat, bookmarking that.

Whu, you actually didn't know about it? :O
Thought everyone involved with the site on an above-average level did. Huh...

Thx, srsly. I'll keep that in mind.

I've come this far by using vanilla E621. No user addons or such.

I also use this tool to spot potential parent/child relations when there are only minor changes.

Damn, that's brilliant! I'm gonna have to remember that way of using it too. *makes a note to self*

OMG!! O_o

Found another artist that only has 20 posts here so far and 630 more commissions still yet to be uploaded.

This may take a while.

Not sure if it's a good idea to mass upload all that.
Quite a lot of it is probably sketches and low-quality stuff, and I think there was some other artist recently who made a huge takedown request after some guy mass-uploaded his art and spammed the site with it, ouroborous or something.

Anyhow, it'd be a good idea to make sure they're 100% on having their art on here, otherwise mass uploading can lead to another artists added to the DNP list.

Well, then so do I, because this isn't really something like a browser add-on (which I don't use either).

That's why I stopped on the third for Nateday, I don't know if they are site-worthy.

Ok, but I'm pretty sure Liquid36 won't mind.

And may I ask who was that recent artist that requested a mass takedown? If it doesn't bother you, I want to see why.

That was a pretty extreme and isolated incident. I doubt anyone's likely to recreate it anytime soon.

What happened is that a single user uploaded 1200+ images all by one artist, without switching off with uploading other artists for variety, or spacing it out in any way. After a relatively short while, people felt like every day they were seeing more art by the same artist filling up the recent uploads. As his upload limit got higher, people started to feel like it was spamming the site. They started downvoting the uploads and blacklisting the artist, and filling the comments and blips with feedback about how they didn't like seeing so much of it all the time and all at once. But the uploader didn't take the hint and kept going. Eventually the artist found out and felt like it was giving his art undeserved backlash, felt like it was spamming this site, was bothered by all of that and requesting all of his art that was uploaded by just that one user be taken down. But it didn't result in a DNP, and that artist left up all the art that had been uploaded by himself and anyone else. It was just the fact that one user went so far overboard. And a few other factors didn't help, like only adding the same handful of basic tags and leaving everyone else to tag his uploads even as he uploaded more and more. And some of it was apparently unfinished sketches, line art where the picture had been finished and posted already so it didn't seem to add much value to be uploading it, etc etc. Or at least that's what I gather happened. I came back in time to see it all disappear and then read the aftermath here.

In a nutshell though, as long as people space things out, do it slowly over time and mix in other artists as well, then it should be alright. As long as you don't take it to the far extreme, you'll probably be fine. If that uploader had done it over 6 months instead of less than 2 months, he might have been fine. Or uploaded a mixture of artists and spread it out. Stuff like that probably would have had a much better outcome for everyone involved.

Hum... never thought about it. Good thing to know.

Wow.. just wow..

I feel that viewers shouldn't downvote a post just because they feel sick of seeing it everyday. That's just abusing and that made the artist takedown everything.

They should just message Namicorn and tell him to tone down a little or else he wouldn't have ended up with -308 upload limit. Well, at least 13 of his 1289 uploads made it.

I will try to merge some artists together when posting, maybe posting them slowly.

Well, some people also hate having their art modified by somebody else. In case of

if you look at the comments you'll find out how cool EmptySet was about somebody else changing his art. I'm sure there are other artists feeling not so good about it.

Wait, that's editted by someone else.

Doesn't that make this a fan art or maybe a parody?

Somebody is claiming his work, editting it than reposting it. If the artist isn't pissed, I don't know what will.

Yeah, probably. Just want to make him aware that happened.
It'd be pretty neat if ya could link us this artist you talk about, Wolfgang. That way the uploads would be spread out far more than if they were to all be uploaded by a single user.

Guessing the artist you're talking about is Liquid36?
I'm fairly sure I got his permission to post his stuff on here, but that was long ago, before my Notes got deleted, so I'm not a hundred on that.

I try to tell dudes to ask for permission to edit first but so far I was unheard. Some artists don't mind but some take it as an insult. Those that take it as an insult think "Oh so the original wasn't good enough for you so you had to edit it?" and then they takedown the edit. Just asking can prevent a lot of stress and tension in the future

That's why I've colored some! :)

I ask for permission, though. Well, one out of two but that was because I couldn't contact Zev (I did find one that had a similar, longer name but wasn't sure, so I uploaded and left it to luck. Thankfully, it has stayed ;) )

I've tried that myself once or twice, and the usual answer is along the lines of "there's already tons of edits here and clearly they didn't ask for permission. So I shouldn't have to do it either."

Reminds me of this one time when I asked for permission to post something, and the artist said that it's okay to post, as long as it's credited and not edited in anyway. Then as soon as I post it, someone else goes and edits it. *facepalm*
