Topic: Direct Description copy & paste on Posts

Posted under General

Hello everybody, is it wrong to directly copy & paste the artist's description to a post?

Look at these examples that I have posted,

Artwork by Liquid36, not me and no copyright intended.

Someone was kind enough to edit the descriptions.

I Loled at the "NOT WOLFGANG'S ART" at the bottom. I think it's pretty obvious that it's not your art since there's a different artist tagged, but whatevers.

Personally, I don't see a problem with it except that there's extraneous stuff in the description not related to the picture. I'd say 'trim the fat' off of the descriptions where you can, and only leave stuff that's actually describing the picture, not small talk by the artist. Just my two cents.

I do it all the time, or at least when I feel it adds something to the picture. If there's only small talk it's often useless.

Ok, so I have removed all talk that doesn't have to do with the art.

Thx very much, guys. Appreciated it.

No prob. :)

I've also found that it's usually the commissioners who have the interesting descriptions. Some artists like to spice theirs up too if a post contains their own characters, but when there are only commissioned characters involved it's usually just some dry info.

Artist's description:

This is a commission for Rebeldragon101 and Synxthelynx who both have permission to repost it! :°3

Unruled helped me with this :°3"

Informative and good for getting everyone involved credited (which can be handy for keeping commissioners happy so they don't start bawwing for removals, so be sure to hotlink them like they are at the source), but otherwise it's not much fun.

Then there's Synxthelynx's description :

Synx scratched his belly with a yawn, waking prematurely from his slumber with his throat parched. He began making his way out of his bedroom, only a pair of briefs to provide him warmth in the night as he stumbled down the hallway trying to find his way to the kitchen.

Using his paws to guide him, he began to feel his way along the hallway walls in the darkness of the house. The walls were familiar to him, as he looked down the hallway with his eyes squinted, trying to wake up. His paw gave way along the wall, as his paw pushed against his housemate's door. The door was left slightly ajar, his paw causing it to gently open from his touch. Synx's eyes opened wide as he realised his housemate's room was left open. Being an opportunist, the lynx stuck his head inside the dimly lit room to see if the dragon was there, as his eyes quickly adjusted to the darkness.

Inside lay his housemate, Ernesto, deep in slumber on his bed. The large male dragon lay sprawled out naked, belly down with his tail off to the side, exposing his rump. His face lay burried in the pillow as he hugged into it, his chest slowly rising and falling in a low rumble.

Synx's heart skipped a beat to the sight. Ernesto was the type of male who never let anyone near his rear, especially another male. The small lynx couldn't help but feel intrigued by the opportunity that laid in front of him. Surely it couldn't hurt for him to get a closer look in the darkness, he tried to reassure himself. He was a small lynx after all, being sneaky should be his middle name!

Synx used his paw to push open the door further, allowing him to slip in. He gently moved his way over to Ernesto's bed, his eyes glued to the dragon for any signs of disturbance as he listened intently to his breathing. Dodging the clothes that lay sprawled along the dragon's floor, he made his way to the side of the bed.

He stood at the side of the bed, looking down at the dragon, frozen as he could hear his heart racing as he tried to control his breathing. The last thing he wanted was for Ernesto to catch him in his room, let alone perving on him while he's sleeping. His eyes soaked in the dragon's form, slowly moving down from the dragon's muscular back down to the base of his thick tail, and finally his rump. Looking at the dragon's rump gave the lynx butterflies. The dragon's tail lay flopped off to the side, giving Synx the perfect access.

He hesitated for a moment. He'd come this far, he could go further. The lynx slowly learned forward over the dragon, reaching out a paw as he gently placed it on the dragon's rump. His eyes still glued to the the dragon's head, his ear's twitching for the slightest disturbance from the slumbering male. Synx pressed his paws a little firmer on one of the dragon's cheeks, feeling how firm they are under his paw pads as he slowly began to pull it to the side. Now was the chance he desired, the lynx thought to himself. He took his eyes off the dragon's head and looked over the dragon's tail, down between the spread rear.

Just a little backstory I wrote up in about 15 minutes for this commission, please be gentle as I haven't written a story since middle school ;-;

There's most likely going to be a continuation of this pic coming up eventually~

Ernesto belongs to Rebeldragon101]

Seems pretty clear to me which one would have the most added value on here, especially since Synx doesn't forget to mention the artist and second commissioner, meaning you have pretty much same thing plus a related story thingie that some might wanna rub one out to. ;3

I'm afraid that if I insert the "commission for who" part, it would be the same as the last time.

Some people may think I'm the artist.

Should I stick to just the plain description of the art?

You could try the whole "Artist says:" and "Commissioner says:" thing.

Oh yeah, true. I usually try to prevent that kind of misunderstanding by throwing a signature under the description.

Seems to work pretty well. But that's just my way of doing it, NotMeNotYou's suggestion is equally good.

In fact, perhaps I should make it a habit to add something like (commissioner) to my signatures, just to further clarify their relation to the pic. Just for commissioners though, if it's an artist's description that should already be immediately clear when you compare the sig and artist tag.

Meh, I like to keep it simple.

Not that I don't want to add credits of the commisioners and the artist. But I do my uploading around midnight and I also have difficulties using my phone.

You guys are welcome to edit the descriptions, it's just too much work for me.

Ey, I'm not saying you're to immediately edit these or whatever, just that it's perhaps something you might wanna try in the future. But nobody's going to force you to do it all perfectionist-like, that's just us.

Write in your user info that you're no artists and that credit is to whomever it belongs

Just for clarifications sake, I think most of these were just suggestions given because it sounded like you were looking for ideas on ways to make things even clearer. The way you have those descriptions right now also works though, so I don't think anyone's gonna fault you if you leave 'em like that. It's got the basics, it's clear, it's just the stuff that adds/talks about the picture, etc. In a nutshell: it works.

On a personal note, I'm gonna tuck the ideas in this thread in a note to myself somewhere for future reference, because there's some nice and simple solutions suggested here that'll come in handy sometimes.

Exactly. He asked, we answered. But they're merely suggestions.

I'm already happy when someone's even bothering to add descriptions at all, but if the way it's done causes some misconceptions among others, that's how to keep them from happening.

Updated by anonymous

Yeah, like Furrypickle and Jugofthat are saying, these are just suggestions. I don't think there was any real problem with your descriptions aside from a small thing here or there, so you shouldn't feel bad about them at all. I think it's good that you're using descriptions at all.

To be totally honest I've been wary of putting anything in the description myself as they don't necessarily seem important, and might draw unnecessary, unwanted attention to my stupid writing habits. I too will be taking a lot of the suggestions mentioned here and trying to use them in future posts.

It's annoying, but not against the rules. And you don't have to worry about people here thinking you're the artist.

What's annoying exactly?

Me mistaken as the artist.

So far, nobody's doing that.
