Trailer

So I just saw this abomination.

Sonic is way too brightly coloured. I'm not that into Sonic, but I know he's supposed to be a darker blue than that. A few simple tweaks to the character design would have made this much less embarrassing too. I have no idea why they used "Gangster's Paradise" as music for this trailer either. Is it because Sonic breaks the rules? Literally makes no sense to me. This is looking worse than Pikachu, Dora and Aladdin trailers put together. Why are there so many awful CGI movies coming out this year?

something about sonic's arms being blue

It looks too terrible to be real yet too expensive to be a parody

Dealing with the Sonic franchise, this is what we get instead of the Sonic Satam movie project that was canned.

Oh God, now that you mention it, I wonder what his reaction to this will be...

My nephews want to see it, and I do too, but for different reasons. This movie is going to be pure fucking garbage. I enjoy laughing at garbage movies, and I CAN'T WAIT!

Updated by anonymous

Hot garbage. An affront to everything anyone ever loved about the character. An unwitting effort to dethrone Manos: Hand of Fate. An inevitable addition to the MST3K library. The unholy spawn of boardroom committees and marketeer focus testing.

Really, there's no question whether I'll see it in theaters. The only questions are how drunk will I get beforehand, how much more drunk I'll become during the actual viewing, and whether I'll blind myself trying to bleach the after images from my eyeballs once I'm out.

This and Detective Pikachu are testaments as to why cartoon characters should NEVER be rendered in a "realistic" fashion. Did the Super Mario Brothers movie not make anyone learn? Who thought it looked good!?

Why not have CGI (sensible CGI, like the in-game graphics) mixed with live action? Yes, it would be cheesy, but it'd be a more fun kind than just an ugly beast on my floor.

Jim Carrey is a good actor, but is neither fat nor bald, so he wouldn't make a good Robotnik.

I would frankly worry if they added Big the Cat just due to what they'd make him look like.

Updated by anonymous

...a transparent effort to kill off whatever was left of the Sonic fanbase. A burn notice to every actor conned into helping make it. A cry for help from Paramount Pictures. A 90-minute treatise on everything wrong with CGI movies. Sufficiently offensive as to have been written, shot, directed, and produced by 4channers.

[Edit: ...and a visual analogy to that feeling of rising bile preceding empty attempts to vomit.

Okay, I think that's out of my system now.]

Updated by anonymous

Jim Carrey seems like the only enjoyable thing in this film, the rest of the humor is really weak.
Also sonic's design is not good but not that horrible, its not the realistic human teeth that is the problem, its just the fact that they decided to make him realistic and those weird fucking eyes i just hate them.
Also, did they turn sonic into Dr. Strange? he threw a ring and he teleported some kids at 1:59 lol

But yeah this seems like the typical pasionless hollywood project that just wants to cash into the fanbase, without caring for the source material at all.

Atleast detective pickachu cares about what it is, because it captures the essence of pokemon while being true to the source material, unlike this souless cashgrab.

Updated by anonymous

Jim's going to carrey this movie. Looked like the only enjoyable part.

Sonic's design is horrible and it looks ugly to look at. Would be better to just have a literal hedgehog, spray-painted blue, with no dialogue, badly cropped into each shot, than what they went with.

Though, admittedly, I don't think Sonic has a great design to begin with, this rendition of him is unarguably the worst.

In short:

Updated by anonymous

Some characters IMO simplely aint ready for CGI and just need to stay animation. Detective Pikachu looks like it will be an ok movie in CGI, but theres no good way to make Sonic look in a realistic design.

Updated by anonymous

It's like someone unearthed a time capsule for shitty 90s kids movies, right down to Jim Carrey being cast for being/to play "Jim Carrey". And redid the CGI, but stopped at the level of the first CG chipmunks movie. I'll never understand why these video game, anime, and cartoon adaptation movies are so afraid to just, ya know, adapt the source material... Why does it always have to be some "portal to another world", "but in the REAL world", etc bullshit.

I will fight you to the death. There is nothign wrong with the SMB movie. Not one thing.

.... as for my opinions... like..

This feels weirdly out of place.

Like, they had to travel back in time and came back with this movie or something. it feels WEIRD.

I have a tiny hope that, like, the trailer is actually only going to cover the first third of the movie, and that the rest of the movie is going to be WAY different. Youtube has conditioned me to expect the odd glitch effects to mean that "not everything is what it seems" ...

... but probably not.

also Jim Carrey feels very... stiff to me, somehow. it's a bit weird.

Updated by anonymous

I don't get why people keep complaining about these trailers. Sonic looks amazing, Detective Pikachu looks amazing, and Aladdin looks amazing. Frankly I don't care enough to look into Dora.

Updated by anonymous

Looks mildly uncanney valley, too much CGI for my liking, poorly written, dated jokes and slang (Basic? Who the hell uses basic anymore unless they mean the dictionary defined basic?), actors that either are past prime (Jim Carrey is 57 and trying to come off as younger) or aren't exactly the greatest (James Marsden is successful, for sure, but nothing he's been in is really all that spectacular, especially with him leading), dated soundtrack (Gangsta's paradise? In 2019?), and seems like just another desperate, franchise boosting, mass-appeal, as harmless as possible, mindless drivel for kids to eat up, parents to tune out to, and young adults to treat as background noise grope each other in the back of the theater.

The reason for so many of these similar films is they're narrowing the media. They want to have adult and kids movies be the same so they can make either twice as many shit films for maximum revenue, or half as many shit films to be lazy. Feel free to turn that into some kind of conspiracy about brainwashing, herd mentality, or some shit like that, but it's not what I'm saying, and it doesn't change the facts.

Looks as high in quality as the Sonic franchise itself.

That trailer looks absolutely terrifying. Jim Carrey will be the best thing about it, but I've gotten to where I like him better as an artist.

Nope. It legitimately looks good. You've been spoiled by crazy badass looking stuff like Transformers. Stop thinking about it that way and you should be able to realize that this isn't as bad looking as everybody says it is.

Initial reactions to the trailer and character design aside. The history of these kinds of features isn't on your side. Seems to me it's another CGI Alvin & The Chipmunks / Smurfs in real life scenario with boring storytelling and terrible humour.

I really don't think it's a matter of wanting things to look awesome or cool or whatever else. I think the design just looks uncanny.

Here, I found this while scanning around making this comment, and I feel like it is a great demonstration of what I mean.

The top isn't any more "badass" than the bottom, and it's not like it's a matter of better or worse CGI either. I just think the design they went with was ugly. Make it a bit more cartoony and it looks way better.

lmao this isnt about things not looking awesome and badass. this is about the designs going too far down into the uncanny valley, and its really uncomfortable to look at.

1. That's neither here or there
2. It's not about looking badass-ness, it's about not looking garbage
3. CG creatures never look good next to IRL. Even Avatar, considered one of the best films to utilize CGI, wasn't that good when it came to real and digital creatures looks.

lolol

I've got to say, I personally don't find his design too bad, though it is weird. The biologist side of me appreciates the fact that they tried to give him realistically-sized eyeballs that aren't plate-sized anime discs. On the other hand, our suspension of disbelief is already fully engaged in the first place, what with it being Sonic and all, so why try to make it look more real?

In any case I'm sure it will be a stock video game movie, with a popular actor (in the skin of Jim Carrey) playing themselves, cheap explosions gallore, an all-too-contemporary soundtrack, and a smattering of edgy innuendo for the older audience. I am so excited -_-

Okay okay okay, for one, that was just the trailer; two, 1995 is pretty darn contemporary; and three, when one believes that nearly all soundtracks should be orchestrally scored, everything else is contemporary lol.

1. Yeah, but they're meant to be indicative of the film as a whole. So I imagine that there'll be more songs of that decade.
2. 1995? Really? No, seriously, more than twenty years ago? Over two whole decades? Not to say that non contemporary music or media is always bad, don't get me wrong there, but imo calling something from more than 10 years ago contemporary is already a misuse of the word, let alone more than twenty years[/b]

Trailers often have music that doesn't appear in the film at all but is simply meant to play up the action.

I do hold that Gangsta's Paradise is essentially contemporary. Rap hasn't changed that much in twenty years. It's still fairly representative of the genre and certainly remains a very a modern song I would say. If you didn't know when Gangsta's Paradise was written, would you call it "old"? Actually what am I saying, I know it's old because it doesn't have any language in it lol :P

Besides, I was born about 1995, and it feels like it was yesterday haha (not that that's strictly relevant to whether GP is contemporary or not, but it just shows how my perception is colored I guess).

I'm sure that the emoji movie would have been a lot better with an orchestral soundtrack lol

Nothing could have made that movie better save a complete overhaul of script and plot, and replacement of cast with actors who don't make me shudder when I hear their name.

Guess how I know you don't listen to modern rap. While it is for sure the same genre, it is very very different sounding. I can't put it into words, but even as a person who generally doesn't care for rap, I can't even BEGIN to understand how you think it's similar.

If you didn't know when Gangsta's Paradise was written, would you call it "old"?

I actually didn't until this thread. I had to look it up for my initial rant on the first page, just because I already knew the song was old. It just isn't that modern sounding.

Actually what am I saying, I know it's old because it doesn't have any language in it lol :P

Jokes aside, that's probably 50% of why they chose it. A rap song (one of if not the most popular genre among the youth rn) with no explicit language the censor (can still be pushed towards children)

Really though, my friends listen to today's rap, so I know the sound somewhat, but
I don't know recent rap super well because in my *opinion* it's mostly trash. Most of the rap I listen to regularly is from before 2010, and even then only a handful of songs. So yes, I don't know rap super well. I know it's different, but to me the difference is relatively inconsequential. Moushiwakenai desu.

Just take the criticism and don't be so defensive about this.

And, because I already know what you're going to say in response to this: Yes, you are being defensive. Just take the correction. It's not a personal attack.

If you don't like rap, and don't listen to it, no one cares. That's fine. People like what they like. But if you're not familiar with something, just, you know, don't talk about it as if you are.

I probably wouldn't have responded to this except the Bach / Offenbach comment annoyed me for more reasons than I have time to get into.

Pretty much this. Your comment just came off as ignorant. As someone who is a fan of the hip hop/rap genre, today's rap music is nothing like how it was 20 years ago. That's like saying Maroon 5 is the same as Queen. It's just plain wrong :V

Updated by anonymous

@Clawdragons I'm not being defensive, and please don't tell me what I am. Correction? What correction? That I don't know much about rap? I was pretty clear about that fact. To me it appears that my joke was taken personally and you felt the need to retaliate by telling me I'm being defensive. If that's not true then please forgive me. If the Bach/Offenbach comment actually annoyed you then perhaps I'm not the one getting defensive here. It was all completely facetious, though I guess my subscript wasn't clear enough.

Whenever someone says they don't like something during a discussion, someone else always feels the need to say, "Okay, if you don't like it don't listen to it, no one cares." except apparently the person replying cares enough to tell them to shut up, albeit in a more roundabout way, which is essentially what it is.

Instead of mentioning ways rap is different or why what I said was wrong, everyone just jumped in and said, "Huh, you don't listen to rap do you? You don't know what you're talking about do you?" At least @furry-fuckboy offered a little something in that regard. Thanks.

That's just why I'm a little unsettled right now.

Good. Good.

They also claim to have already tried "fixing" the design after people freaked out about the first poster reveal. I don't think the craftsmanship skills of the makers of "Sonic: The Movie (2019)" are going to drastically improve overnight :D

I think sonic's design is way too abstract and stylized for him to be rendered photo-realistically, period. I don't see anyone getting past that fundamental problem no matter how hard they try.

If they really needed to make a Sonic movie in 2019, they should've just gone with a slightly more detailed 3D model of the original cartoonish design and called it a day.

Hate me for this, call me a conspiracy theorist, but i think that they made his design so god awful on purpose. They already released promo art with him looking WAAAAY different (than the trailer), and just to call attention (more money) to the movie they made his design fucking horrendous in 1 trailer and then acted like they fucked up so they could "fix it" (make the design less horrific) and people would actually come to see it because well, it's way better than it was before, and the whole controversy has brought so much attention to it that it has stopped being "just another shitty 3d animated movie" into a whole pop culture outrage discourse thing. but that's just a theory, a GAME theory!
